    3. Please help this resident of the United States better understand this address: St-Jean-Port-Joli, L'Islet. Is the St-Jean-Port -Joli the city and the L'Islet similar to counties in the US or does it mean something else. I see one L'Islet on the map that looks like it means a city by itself and then another L'Islet that looks like it might mean a county or parish or something. Also, is there a reason that Canadian records are written as St-Jean-Port-Joli instead of St. Jean Port Joli? When I am entering this information I really would like it to be correct. Is there any way for me to obtain birth and marriage certificates from here? Thanks, Ida Ransom

    3. I think you have it right - St. Jean Port Joli is the town, in the county of L'Islet. It is located a few miles down the St. Lawrence River, from Quebec City, on the south shore. There is also a town by the name of L'Islet. Many towns in Quebec are named after saints, and the further addition of "Port Joli" identifies it exactly. 3. In French, double barreled names and place names use a hyphen, for example, names like Jean-Michel or Marie-Claire or places like St-Jean-sur-Richelieu or Salaberry-Valleyfield which are both near Montreal. ----- Original Message ----- From: "J & L Kinnear" <jklk@sympatico.ca> To: "iransom" <iransom@snet.net>; <qc-etanglo@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2007 7:47 AM Subject: Re: [QC-ETANGLO] St-Jean-Port-Joli, L'Islet, Quebec, Canada >I think you have it right - St. Jean Port Joli is the town, in the >county of L'Islet.
