Thanks for you reply David. I have tried to be generous with surname spellings in my research and there are plenty of variations of GILIGAN(note just one `L`) believe you me! The family you refer to who married a possible Giligan wasn`t Smith by any chance? When my Grandmother married in Scotland in 1902 she gave her Mother as Mary SMITH which was either the truth or as we believe she was illegitimate, a convenience to save embarrassment. Indeed the Mary GILIGAN mentioned in the 1881 Census was likely her Mother who may or may not have subsequently married a SMITH . Family belief is that Mabel Grace had a sister who, as she did not appear on the 1881 Census, must have been younger than her but we just do not know. Scottish tradition dictates that first born daughter is named after the maternal Grandmother and in Mabel Grace`s case, she called her first born daughter Mary hence Mary Giligan should be the Mother!! Too simple? Anyway, I have contacted Judy Antle on advice of Keith Carter and will be interested to ascertain if the GILIGANS appear on the 1891 Census for Stanbridge. Thanks again for your interest.
