Hello Listers , I have just received an email from someone in the Ottawa area who found a very interesting document.. & asked if we were interested in a copy (at QFHS) I've left his msg attached so you can all read it - but deleted the attachment. If there is anyone in the Ottawa region who would like to HELP with this project.. please contact me privately & I'll put you in touch. I've seen an example of the document..& it will require people who are good at dealing with old faded & illegible handwriting. He says he'll welcome your help!! This is a chance to help with a very worth while project. Pennie Redmile ( his email follows) -- I have located in the National Archives, hand written memos concerning damages incurred during the War of 1812 -14, particularly in the Eastern Townships. Local residents who incurred damages as a result of the War, submitted claims to the government. The claims provide vivid detail of life at that time, crops, trees and buildings are detailed for dozens of local people, all of whom are referred to by name. Almost all are British origin names rather than French. I am working from a poor photocopy at the rate of a page or two a day. It seems obvious that a list of this type could be of interest to your members. If you are, indeed, interested, please make suggestions on how best I could go about publishing this for you. This is a very rich collection.
