    3. Hello Listers, Today was THE day that I found a newspaper that gave the sort of info I had originally thought about..in posting to this list. I have maybe a half hour per week (or 2 weeks) to collect data for you - & the Sherbrooke Record & the Granby Leader Mail did not give a lot in a short space..! However the "Bedford Times & Advocate" seems perfect!! The first issue I have access to - Oct 6 1899 contains all the following gems: Page 2 - under Knowlton's Landing (near Potton & Mansonville) Robert George received $5. as compensation for the loss of 12 sheep that were killed by dogs, & still there are others. Page 2. under South Stukely: Arthur Smith - a young Englishman who has been working for Mr A McPherson , was recently taken to RV hospital (This would be the Royal Victoria Hosp) in Montreal on 17 Sep with an acute attack of appendicitis. News was received next day that the patient has been operated on & was then low. Page 2 under South Stukely: Wm Dimmick was thrown by a run away horse from a wagon loaded with apples & fortunately was not seriously hurt. Page 4: South Stukely A meeting was held at Jerry Johnston's hotel on the 27th (Sept) to enlist young men for settlement in British Columbia- was not attended with enthusiastic success Page 4 : South Stukely Joseph Whitehead , while driving from Waterloo one evening last week, in the woods west of here, came suddenl y in close contact with a large bear. The horse took fright & ran. Mr W's (sic) was the worst injury sustained. Page 4: South Stukely Mrs Ernest Rollins was thrown from her carriage on the 19th ult . She received several bruises but is not seriou sly the worse for her mishap. Page 4: Covey Hill James O'Neill of Iowa was renewing old acquaintances here last week . It is about 23 yrs since Mr O"Neill visited the home of his childhood on the hill. Page 4: Covey Hill Potato digging is in progress. The crop is not only very good but the tubers are very pure- not showing the least sign of rot. Page 4: Covey Hill John Smith , who left here in the early part of the Spring to pay a visit to his old home in England is guest of Postmaster Orr Page 4: Covey Hill Wm Stevenson of Mooers Jct NY has been appointed collector of customs at the port - in place of Mr M Fitch . That's all I had time for today.. but will continue next chance I get..if you all are interested in these. I don't know if any of you want want p/copies of any -- that they'll reproduce as the print is very small & the writing quite faded. My hope is that these newspaper items will give us all a better understanding of day to day life of the people of the E Twps around the turn of that century. If we find this newspaper only includes the western E Twps..I'll try to find one that includes the eastern sector. Let me know (privately) if you want me to continue posting these -- as my decision to continue will rest with you. Pennie
