They're still at it and maybe this time it will come to a head. Today's Ottawa Citizen featured a story of a woman who has successfully fought and apparently won against this "lease" scam being perpetrated by private agencies hired by the Church. However because of this case and others, a class action suit is being considered. So far the problems being reported are around the Hull Quebec area although the original one that kicked off this discussion on this site was referenced to a Church Cemetery in the Sorel area. A recent posting here stated that purchasing a plot would not be permitted inasmuch as this would then require provincial or municipal registration and subsequent land taxes. My very uneducated research has indicated that in all of Canada, and I assume that Quebec is still included, cemeteries are excluded from such taxation. Also the aspect of a lease expiration and subsequent disinterment is a tightly regulated process requiring authority by the Superior Court as well as the diocesan authorities.
