    3. Marlene (Pope) Carpentier recently sent me the following clippings from various papers concerning the above families. (Please watch for errors etc. as I had to retype them as they were to faint to scan.) I would be pleased to receive and share additional family information on these and other families from the Richmond, Quebec area. Bob Dickson Clipping from Marlene (Pope) Carpentier hand dated 1949 Mr. Adam Smith, of Binghamton, N. Y., - Binghamton, N.Y., Sept. 2 - Final Tribute was paid to Adam Smith, formerly of Montreal who passed away June 9th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles L. Pope of Binghamton, N. Y. He was in his 74th year. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, the eldest son of John Smith and his wife Jean Sharp, the deceased came to Canada in 1906, and resided in Richmond, Que., until 1918, when he moved to Montreal. In 1911 (1912 in the clipping and changed to 1911) Mr. Smith married Edna Stalker Beattie, who predeceased him in 1943 and since his retirement from the employ of the C.N.R. in 1942, he had made his home in Binghamton. He is survived by his daughter, a granddaughter, Marlene Pope, a brother James, of Sherbrooke; a sister, Mrs. John Douglas, of Whaddon Bucks, England; and a niece Miss Jean Smith, of Montreal. Mr. Smith was a life member of Masonic Lodge A. F. and A. M. No. 15, of Richmond, Que., and of the Eastern Star, Westmount Chapter No. 9 of Montreal. Rev. T. N. Mitchell officiated at the funeral service and internment was in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Melbourne, Que. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Clipping from Marlene (Pope) Carpentier Mrs. Charles MacLean Miller The death occurred suddenly at her home I Sherbrooke, on Easter Sunday, April 17th of Annie Maude Stalker, beloved wife of Charles MacLean Miller, in her sixty-ninth year. Although she had been under the doctor's care for some time her sudden passing came as a shock to her family and friends. Born at Flodden, on Aug. 24, 1880 she was the last surviving member of the family of the late Gilbert Stalker and his wife Elizabeth Johnston. She was married on Oct. 18, 1907 to C. MacLean Miller, of Flodden, and they lived there until 1916, when they moved to Melbourne. In 1929 they moved to Sherbrooke, where they have since made their home. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the I.O.D.E., of Richmond and was active also in many church activates, until health failed her. The funeral service was held from the Johnston's Funeral Parlors, on Tuesday, April 19, with Rev. R. C. Tait officiating. During the service Mr. Lawrence Pergau sang two favorite hymns of the deceased. "Abide With Me" and "Unto The Hills". Internment took place in St. Andrew;s Cemetery, Melbourne. The bearers were Messrs. John Stalker, Alex Johnston, Thomas Johnston and Charles Stevens. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband; three nieces, *Mr. Charles L. Pope, of Binghamton, N.Y. Mrs. Robert Findlay of Noranda; and Mr. Duncan McKewan, of New York; three nephews, Thomas Stalker, of Lobitos, Peru, S.A. Gilbert MacLeay, of St. Agathades Montes, and Roderick D. Melbourne, Que., March - On March 12th, at her residence Melbourne, Que., after an illness of over six months duration, borne with Christian resignation, there passed away a respected citizen in the person of Elizabeth Johnston, widow of the late Gilbert Stalker. Mrs. Stalker was born at Drummondville, Que., in July 1851, the youngest daughter of the late Thomas Johnston and his wife, Annie Beattie Johnston. When nine years of age her parents moved to Melbourne Ridge, where she resided until 1870, in which year she was united in marriage to Mr. Gilbert Stalker, of Floddden. Of this union five children were born, two sons and three daughters. After a active life extending over a period of forty-five years, Mr. and Mrs. Stalker came to Melbourne Village, to reside. Of high moral character, gentle and loving disposition, she was beloved by all with whom she was associated. The funeral took place on Thursday, March 14th, from her late residence and was largely attended by friends. The service was conducted by Rev. E. W. S. Coates, who spoke words of comfort to the bereaved. Favorite hymns were rendered by the choir of the United Church. Many floral tributes spoke of the love and esteem in which the departed was held. The bearers were Messers. Thomas, Arthur, Linton and Alexander Johnston, all nephews of the deceased. Internment took place in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Upper Melbourne, where she was laid to rest beside her late husband, who predeceased her ten years ago. The deceased leaves to mourn her loss one son, Mr. Duncan Stalker, Leamington, Ont., and two daughters, Mrs. Adam Smith, Montreal and Mrs. MacLean Miller, Melbourne. Seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Clipping from Marlene (Pope) Carpentier The funeral service of the late William Beattie, who was killed at the Slate Quarry, at New Rockland, was held from his late residence, New Rockland, to the Presbyterian Church, Kingsbury, on Sunday, April 2nd. The funeral service was preached by the Rev. Mr. MacLeod, Rector of Kingsbury. The internment took place in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Melbourne, being conducted St. Francis Lodge, A. F. & A. M., Q.E., of Richmond, of which the deceased was a member. Mr. Beattie was only 39 years and 7 months o;d. He leaves a widow and two children to mourn his sudden death. Also, an aged mother, one brother, Mr. S. Beattie, of Montreal; two sisters, Mrs. C. E. Rose, of Racine, and Mrs. Frank A. Woodman, of Bath, N.H., all of whom were here to attend the funeral. A large number of people from Richmond and the surrounding district accompanied the body to its last resting place. At the inquest held Friday, by Deputy Cornor Gadbois, of Sherbrooke, a verdict of accidental death was rendered, at the managers of the Quarry, Messrs. ADAM SMITH, MONTREAL Melbourne, Que., June 1, - The funeral service for Mrs. Adam Smith, who passed away in the Doctor's Memorial Hospital, Binghamton, New York, was held in Binghamton at the home of her daughter, Rev. Dr. Murray Howland officiating. Internment took place in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Melbourne, Que., with Rev. F. G. Woolfrey officiating. The bearers were Roderick T. MacLeay, of Montreal, George V. MacLeay, of Richmond, Alec Stalker, of Windsor Mills, John Stalker, Alec Johnston and Arthur Johnston, of Melbourne Ridge. Mrs. Smith, formerly Edna L. Stalker, was the eldest daughter of the late Mrr. And Mrs. Gilbert Stalker, of Flodden, and leaves to mourn her loss her husband; an only daughter, Mrs. Charles L. Pope, of Binghamton, New York; and a son-in-law, Dr. Charles L. Pope, now a Lt.-Com. on active service Overseas; her granddaughter Marlene; one brother, Duncan Stalker, of Leamington, Ont.,; a sister, Mrs. C. MacLean Miller, of Sherbrooke. Mrs. Smith was a charter member and a past matron of Westmount Chapter No. 9, O.E.S. The floral offerings were beautiful, and the many messages of sympathy were silent tokens of the esteem in which the deceased was held. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Clipping from Marlene (Pope) Carpentier Pope-Beattie The marriage took place quietly today at crystal Springs Church of Miss Inez Elizabeth Beattie, only daughter of the late William Beattie, and of Mrs. Adam Smith, Regent avenue to Dr. Charles L. Pope, of Binghamton, N. Y., son of Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Pope of Richmond, Que. The Rev. G. H. Craik performed the ceremony. The bride, who was given in marriage by her step-father, Mr. Adam Smith, wore her travelling gown, a brown crepe ensemble with a satinella coat trimmed with Russian fox fur, a fur felt hat of the same shade. Shoes to match, and carried an arm bouquet of yellow tea roses and white heather. She was unattended. The ceremony was attended only by the immediate relatives, Dr. and Mrs. Pope leaving later on a motor trip to the Eastern States. They will take up residence in Binghamton, N. Y
