John Stewart, from County Donegal, (all that I know) came to the ET after 1829, as he had twins, Alexander and Mary Ann born in Ireland in 1829. I found him in an 1851 Census for Ste. Catherine, Portneuf County, Quebec,Canada living with his wife (C. Muckleman) and his other 8 children. (Son John was born in Ste Catherine about 1832, so they would have arrived between 1829 and 1832. I have never been able to find anything on the wife's surname, so wonder if it isn't some "sound alike" His brother Alexander Stewart came with him, and married in Quebec, Mary Kanehan (Several spellings on this - Counighan, Conneghan etc) They had 4 children in Quebec, and then moved to the US in or about 1850, as they were in the same census as John.(They emigrated to Vermont - I have info on them) John was a farmer and stayed in Canada, possible Ontario. John's children were all born in Quebec, Canada John b 1832 James b 1836 Sarah Jane b 1838 William b 1839 Robert b 1843 Joseph b 1846 Ann b 1848 (2nd Alexander b 1849) (1rst Alexander b 1829 - Ireland) (2nd Robert b 1850) I would certainly appreciate any info on him or his family. He is brother to my GGgrandfather Alexander Stewart who came to Canada with him. I know that John Stewart is a very common name, but hope I will get lucky. Sorry for the lost post. Cathie in FL PS Perhaps someone could tell me if I could obtain birth records for his children from Ste Catherine.
