    3. Cindy: I have a Phelps mystery you might be able to shed some light on. I would like to figure out who a Catherine Phelps of Stanbridge is. A 12th Jany 1807 Notarial record by Leon Lalanne positively identifies her as Adam Schoolcraft's wife by her second marriage:- "That the Estate whereof the said Adam Schoolcraft was pofsefsed at the day of his decease, being (besides the remaining part of the aforesaid Lot of Land) inconsiderable & its small ~~~ [MN5: which were hardly adequate to her support and maintenance of the children he left which ~~~ were in number five by her marriage with him and two by her former marriage] have not and cannot yet enable her to make the disbursments necefsary and incident to the taking of the steps directed by the Laws for the difsolution of the Community which existed between her and her said late husband ..." From that and later documents one can show that the children by Adam were born between about 1799 and 1805 suggesting her marriage to Adam was around 1798. Two children by a prior marriage, allowing a short gap, suggests her first marriage was probably in the early 1790s and that she might have been born somewhere between 1760 and 1775. (Adam was born in 1756.) I spent an afternoon studying the Phelps charts and data at Brome County Historical Society and determined there was no _explicit_ sign of her in that data. (Some age gaps existed that might accommodate a daughter.) However, I was told that that group were not the only Phelps families to come into the region. To have met and married Adam in 1798/99 she would have been in St. Armand or Stanbridge at that time. I have not been able to isolate the specific date when Adam left the Bay shores and actually went onto his grant in Stanbridge. I do suspect it was earlier than the grant date of 1801. Catherine was alive at least through 9th Mar 1839 when she transferred arrears in a life rent (due from her son by Adam) to Tilly Blakely. Hopefully, the Blakely connection might offer further clues. She is not explicitly enumerated in the 1842 census. > -----Original Message----- > From: Alger and Walcott Family [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Saturday, December 04, 2004 07:15 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [QC-ETANGLO] Roll Call: Blakely, Phelps of Missisquoi Co. > > My line overlaps with Sandy's Blakely line (and peripherally > connect's with Pam's Coreys and Tryons) Fred Blakely was also > very helpful to me.
