    3. Hello Listers, Went to the newspaper archives today - & hand copied a few of the finds in the Bedford News & Advocate for Friday - May 30 1902. This is the 3rd newpaper we've looked at..& all others in-between are "missing" from the m/film. Mystic: (nr Bedford) Miss Margaret Phelps arrived here on Mon evening from Adamsville where she has been teaching school since last Sept. = St Johns: The first excursion of the season to Missisquoi Park in Highgate Springs will take place June 3rd under the auspices of the Granby Brass Band. Return tickets cost : from: Waterloo 75¢; Granby 65¢; Farnham 50¢; St Johns 50¢; Frelighsburg 75¢; Stanbridge East 65¢. (then gives the times the train will pick up passengers in each town) Granby Brass Band will go forth 25 strong & with new silver plated uniforms. = Huntingdon: Finlay McIntosh is buying 2 car load (sic) of horses to be shipped to Winnipeg...... = Howick: Mr Ness Sr sailed for England on the "Numidian" last Sat. He will extend his visit to France & Scotland in search of horses for the Dominion government. = Waterloo: Long discussion about the fence around the Protestant church being removed & sold. People were not at all pleased! = Under "Round About Us" Last yr by getting up a picnic the teacher in district 10 (Rockburn) Miss E Cogland was instumental in equipping the school house with a clock & other articles & in addition by her effort, a fine bell has been placed on the belfry. In consequence of her commendable energy , Miss Cogland has been re-engaged & her salary increased to $20 a month. = Stanbridge East: On Fri Mrs Wm Jones sustained quite a painful injury, falling from a step ladder. We are glad to hear that she is recovering. = NOTICE: My wife having left my bed & board without any just cause or provocation - I hereby notify all pesons against harbouring or trusting her on my account. signed: W Merritt Bockus . Bedford May 10 1902. = North Pinnacle (nr Sutton/Frelighsburg) Wedding at the home of Anson Willey on the 22nd inst. for his adopted daughter Sylvia Allen Wilson to Mr F J Powers of Sweetsburg. = Bondville: (nr Knowlton) The tolling of the church bell on Wed morning last, announced the death after weeks of suffering, of Mrs Otis Streeter. The sad event has cast a gloom over the whole community. Less than two yrs ago she came to live among us, a happy bride, & during that brief period, she won the love & esteem of all. Her mother-less baby boy & sorrowing husband have the heartfelt sympathy & prayers in this great bereavement. Mr Streeter has been sorely afflicted in many ways during the past two yrs & is now, himself, recovering from a severe illness. (says she's buried in Fulford) = Knowlton: Henry Stone returned from Montreal (Mtl) & remarked the roads there are no better than in Knowlton. Whether this is a reflection upon Mtl highways or a compliment to Knowlton - we will leave to Judge Lynch -who is an authority on good roads - to decide. = Granby: The young sister of Mrs Bruce Neil met with a painful though not very serious accident last week. While handling a revolver belonging to Mrs Neil - it was accidently discharged - the bullet making a 32 calibre hole through her fingers = Granby: Sympathy is extented to Mr & Mrs J Bruce Payne in (the) loss they sustained by the tragic end to Mrs Payne's aunt - Mrs Goddard at Ste Agathe. Her lamentable death was caused by the fire last week which destroyed the sanitorium in which Mrs Goddard was a patient. (note this sanitorium was a tb hospital & the place is Ste Agathe des Monts - not the Ste Agathe in Lotbiniere) = Sutton: Mrs George Lawrence - sister of Albert Dyer arrived from Spokane W.T. Sun nite. Mrs Lawrence lived in Waterloo some yrs ago where she was an enthusiastic temperance w orker. = Knowlton: Abram Blunt died at his residence in W Bolton - Sat - after a long illness . The afflicted family have the sympathy of the entire community. = Knowlton: John Williamson's barn & contents burned on Fri. Children playing with matches - was the cause of the fire. = Sutton: James Sandsworth of Dunham Ridge died last Sat & was interred in the Prot. burial ground on Tues. = Cowansville: Thomas Sloggett - a good old citizen - aged 79 - died last Thurs night. He led an active life up to the end. 40 yrs in the undertaking business. death caused by blood poisoning. When Mr Sloggett came over to Canada from the old country he lived awhile in Granby. (names his children) = Sweetsburg: A birthday party was held for little Margaret Pickel from 3-6pm last Mon at the residence of T R Pickel. Helen (twin sister) was away visiting Boston & area with her Mother. (gives names of children present) Then says that Kathleen McQuinlan got the precious slice of cake with an elegant little gold ring inside. = Sweetsburg: Charles M Cotton - of McGill University was chosen for a yr's sojourn & study in France. (scholarship) = That's all - folks!! Next time we'll do the entries for the eastern parts of the Twps from this newspaper. Pennie
