Hello Listers, Was at the newspaper archives today..& needed an 1852 western - Eastern Twps newspaper - which wasn't available.. but I did find the "Missiskoui Standard" (1835) from Frelighsburgh. Bedford News & Advocate: May 30 1902 (same as last week) Sweetsburg: There is presently only one prisoner in jail & he, being lonely & forlorn - is likely to be pardoned out. ++ Mack's Mills: (Anyone know where this is?) Family of James Merrill are all down with the measles. ++ Obituary: Albert Gilmore - of Rock Island -- born in Pointe du Lac, Qc 15 Jul 1830 (gives more data) ++ Graniteville: Myron Morse suffered an accident @ Stanstead Granite Co quarry on Sat by coming into contact with a guy wire & cutting his nose very badly. ++ Bulmer: AJ More's family have been sick with measles. ++ Moe's River: Victoria Day passed very quietly. The glove shop was closed that day ++ Martinville: Willie Merriel has been very ill with measles. - Mrs W Thompson has sold her farm in Compton & rented a house in this village. - Mr T Merrill is putting the finishing touches on his new barn. When completed - this barn will be the best in this vicinity ++ Cherry River: Mr & Mrs Charles Buzzell were thrown from a wagon & Mrs Buzzell's arm was broken at the wrist & again below the elbow. Mr Buzzell received serious injuries to the abdomen . Both progressing favorably. (more) ++ Sawyerville: Concert held on the 24th was well attended & a gratifying success. Total reciepts were $42.50 (gives programme & weather) ++ Magog: The tug "John A" took a boom of logs in tow last Sun morning & started for Newport . - Cherry River is now clear of logs. The last boom was taken away Sun. morning. An early settler & respectable inhabitant. ++ May 12: Married at N Hero - Levi Derby of Caldwell's Manor to Mellissa M Williams of N Hero - by P Cook Esq. - Stray mare - strayed from stable on Apr 29 - a light roan - 4 yrs old - handsome reward - Benjamin Castle - Sutton May 4 1835 ++ May 18: Succession of late James Kimball & wife Martha Chamberlin -deceased. All claims against estate have 3 months to file. Debtors to pay without delay to Fernando Cotez Kimball of Dunham - tutor of the minor children. Frelighsburg- May 19 1835 - signed Leon Lalanne NP ++ June 2: On the 18th Ult @ Caldwell's Manor - Mrs Timothy Wheeler gave birth to 2 sons - On 23rd ult @ Christie's Manor - Mrs Harrington gave birth to to a son & a daughter. (nb: if anyone is researchinging the Harrington family of Clarenceville- would you please contact me) ++ June 9: On June 4 @ Sabevois in the house of TS Russell - Mrs Freeman Tree died of consumption. - At Bolton on 28th ult - Alex'r Thompson died..aged 88 yr. One of the first settlers here & one of the first at Barnet Vt. (mentions he was a Scottish Emigrant) ++ June 16: St Armand East --on the 15th - Mrs Hiram Barns gave birth to twin sons ++ July 14: Mrs Comfort Fadden had a daughter on the 5th at Caldwell's Manor - On July 4th @ Noyan - Elijah Oakes Whitney - son/o Joseph Whitney -aged 16 - died of a a tumor . ( very ugly description of the tumor (mouth/face) included. ++ The next newspaper is listed in the newspaper archives under Waterloo Advertiser.. but on the film it says " The Advertiser & Eastern Townships Sentinel- Knowlton" Jan 8 1856: general info: One hundred tons of ladies hairpins are manufactured annually in USA ++ Jan 25 1856: J A Holtham charged with killing his brother in Compton, was arrested in Derby, Vt ( returned to Sherbrooke) - to be tried Feb next. The deceased brother was not found at Waterville as stated but in s/e part of Compton. - A good pig: MGF Spafford of Compton sold a pig in Sherbrooke (2 yrs old) which weighed 633 lbs & for which he received $69.63 (more) That's it for this week - but if anyone can follow Brenda Birch's example from last week & post more info about any of these items it will certainly make it more interesting for us all.
