Benoni caught my eye also because of my husband's gr. grndfthr., "Belonie" Forgues (from Quebec) I've seen his name also listed as Benoni, Benony, Bermoni and in the US he was called Benjamin after a time. I always wondered why no one could get it right but I guess they didn't put as much emphasis on the proper spelling of a name as we do now. That's an interesting comment about why it was used. I've heard that name was used for a son if his father died shortly after his birth which can be a helpful clue sometimes. Had always wondered about mine as it sounded Italian to me.>>
