    2. I have beat my head against the wall in NB trying to find my Johnston family. I just found them on the 1851 census and all the child who later said they were born NB were listed on this census as born Lower Canada so I thought I might try here. 1. [QC-ETANGLO] Book on Coaticook and surrounding villages
    2. L Gosselin
    3. The name of the book on Coaticook is L'Histoire de Coaticook (1818-1976); the author is Roch Dandenault, pub 1976 with copyright by the town of Coaticook and pub. by Editions Sherbrooke . it's over 700 pages and has many short biographies, some of them in English (presumably furnished by descendants). In addition to Coaticook, there are histories of various lengths of about twenty villages in the surrounding area. The names listed are mostly the original founders and inhabitants plus the mayors circa 1976. It's very uneven in quality, but sometimes there are surprising historical/genealogical tidbits. 2. More on these two Wheelers can be found in the book: History of Royalton, Vermont : with family genealogies, 1769-1911 Royalton, Vt.: The Town and the Royalton Woman's Club, 1911, 1264 pgs. by Lovejoy, Evelyn M. Wood. The Wheeler genealogy begins on page1023 and there may be more information on other pages. Some of my Cleveland genealogy is also in this book. Sylvester Cleveland went to Barnston about the same time as the Wheelers. I go to Heritage Quest and do a search for Royalton, Vermont to view this book. What is the name of the book on Coaticook? 1. [QC-ETANGLO] More Quebec Cemetery Lease Info
    2. J. Keith Carter
    3. They're still at it and maybe this time it will come to a head. Today's Ottawa Citizen featured a story of a woman who has successfully fought and apparently won against this "lease" scam being perpetrated by private agencies hired by the Church. See the story on this URL. http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/city/story.html?id=ad72c153-f78f-4c63-a52d-76a858663dd9 It would seem that cemetery plots "were" purchased and documentation substantiates this, so the agency and church have backed off. However because of this case and others, a class action suit is being considered. So far the problems being reported are around the Hull Quebec area although the original one that kicked off this discussion on this site was referenced to a Church Cemetery in the Sorel area. A recent posting here stated that purchasing a plot would not be permitted inasmuch as this would then require provincial or municipal registration and subsequent land taxes. My very uneducated research has indicated that in all of Canada, and I assume that Quebec is still included, cemeteries are excluded from such taxation. Also the aspect of a lease expiration and subsequent disinterment is a tightly regulated process requiring authority by the Superior Court as well as the diocesan authorities. See URL - http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03508a.htm I know I have posted on this subject before, and while responses certainly from the Eastern Townships have indicated that there has been no reported incidents there, most of my ancestors are in Quebec and as such I have a deep rooted interest. Also for those of us who have documentation of purchase and ownership of cemetery plots, such as is indicated in the newspaper story today, it's worth keeping track of what is happening . -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 2. Brian, The memorial is in my possession. I call it a memorial because I don't know what else to call it. I imagine these memorials were in fashion for a certain time period. My mother had the frame that this memorial was in made into a coffee table and put our family pictures in it but she left the memorial in it, under the pictures. I have a much smaller memorial for one of my acncestors, Mrs Thomas Ham (Lucy Kendal Keech) who died in 1906. This one is not framed and is in more of a cardboard, like some early pictures, measuring about 4 by 6 inches. 1. [QC-ETANGLO] The Boomhower family in and near Stanbridge.. Philip Ruiter's ledgers.
    2. David J. Ellis
    3. NOTE: In the following message the character for "one half" is used. I'm not sure if the mail list accepts it or not. If you see the symbol ½ it started out as "one half". ------------------------------ This weekend I paid a visit to the Missisquoi Museum in Quebec and came across several items of interest. The Museum recently obtained the loan of two ledgers from Philip Ruiter's store in Philipsburg. Within them are several Boomhower references. The earliest record is interesting. Philip Ruiter recorded lists of transactions as accounts in these ledgers. Those for a James Catlin start Jan 16th, 1800 and go up to June 3rd, 1800. Its half a page of items with costs and a total at the bottom of the account. Half way down the entries, among those for April 14th, is a single line that reads: To cash 1 dollar pd. Jacob Boomhower - 5 - I believe the explanation is as follows. Firstly, the accounts are in £ s. d. where 12 pence [d.] equals 1 shilling [s.] and 20 shillings [s.] equals 1 pound [£]. Therefore I believe that the 5 shillings shown in the transaction has the value of 1 dollar. When I was growing up in England, slang conversation often referred to an English Crown (a 5 shilling piece) as a 'dollar'. I think that in this instance Philip Ruiter may have been acting as a kind of banker and paying some debt that James Catlin owed to Jacob Boomhower, debiting James Catlin's account accordingly. I believe this entry refers to the Jacob Boomhower who was born about 8-Jan-1768. ------------------ In the second ledger, the following account is under the name John Bomhower. I believe this is probably the John who was baptized 19-Jul-1769. The writing is partly obscured by 'wet ink' from a facing page and transcription mistakes may have been made. Dr. John Bomhower 1805 Nov 21 To 1 lb Gun Powder by Isaac Helliker - 5 - July 26 5½ pt Rum at 3/½ - 3 ½ 2 lb Tobacco 1/8 3/4 - 3 4 1 New Syth 8/4 - 8 4 25 2 yds Cotton 2/- at Mr. Notts by younson - 4 - 29 1 Glafs bitters 3½ by ditto - - 3½ 1 pint Rum by ditto 1/3 - 1 3 August 2nd To cash 5/6 Dr. Younson 5/6 - 5 6 13 To 5 quarts 1 pint Rum by ~ - 13 3½ Sept 6 To ½ lb powder Gun - 2 6 Oct 7 To 1 pint Rum - 1 3 ------------- 2 7 10½ NOTE: The abreviation "Dr." that prefixes most names in these document probably refers to "debtor", not "doctor". There is a corresponding "Cr." on the "Contra" pages that carry credits to the account. Also note that Philip has been writing the unit price in the description and this explains some of the 'extra ' numbers. Philip's addition is in error by one penny in the foregoing. ------------------- Also in the second ledger is the account for Baltus Boomhower. I believe this is John's younger brother, Balthasar Boomhower, who was born 25-Aug-1781. I also believe this is the account of a single man who may have had a drinking problem! 1806 Dr. Baltis Bomhower Nov 15 To ballance due Old bookpage 60 £1 1 4 17 To bitters 3 Gills Rum - 1 10½ 2 Glafses bitter - - 7½ 24 To 6 Glafses bitters at different time - 1 10½ 2½ yds. I think it is probably referring to work that Baltus has done to pay off what is mostly a bar bill above. 1806 Nov 29 By 14½ days choping Wood £1 16 3 1807 August 11 By 5½ days work ditto By 18 days 1808 August 18 By 11 days work 3/9 2 - - Another document shows that Baltus initiated a legal action on behalf of Maria Schoolcraft in 1805 when someone else was suspected of stealing yarn from her. His purchases of cloth may indicate a continuing relationship with Maria. ----------------------------- Also in the second ledger is the account for Jacob Boomhower. I believe this is John's older brother and is the same Jacob as referred to in the first ledger. 1807 Dr. Jacob Bomhower Senr. Oct 24 To ½ bushel Salt 3/9 £- 3 9 Nov 17 8 pains Widow Glafs -/7 - 4 8 Dec 24 ½ bushel Salt - 3 9 1808 Jany 7 1 Gill bitters - - 7½ -------------- £0 12 9½ On the next page is what appears to be cash paid. 1807 Contra Cr. Oct 21 By cash £- 2 6 1810 Jany 1 By cash by C. McCloud 4 4 7 ------------- 4 7 1 1808 Contra Cr. June 2nd By cash £- 7 6 1809 Sept 20 By cash 5 3½ -------------- £0 12 9½ It looks as though the pending winter of 1807 prompted Jacob to glaze his home. Its likely it was a log home with only skins or shutters coving the windows when first built.

    1. Re: [QC-ETANGLO] Quebec Cemetery Lease
    2. What every one has to remember is that no one purchased a piece of land in which to be buried the land in most cases that we call a cemetery is owned by the Church, it is a plot in this land that is purchsed for burial purposes. The church never sold title to a piece of land. In Quebec if you buy a piece of land then it becomes offically registered and you pay taxes on it where as a plot in a cemetery is not the same. I would think that having a lawyer explain things might get a bit complicated.... there is no published law that you would like to read that states any thing about a plot ... the Civil code provides the right to the Church to do what it wants to do with its land, and since the church expecially the RC one is always looking for money they simply changed the way of handling burial plot proceedures .. you must remember most people did not pass by a Notary to have the purchase of a piece of land registed in thier name when it came to buying a plot in a parcel of land owned by the church. 2. David J. Ellis
    3. This weekend I paid a visit to the Missisquoi Museum in Quebec and came across another small item of interest regarding this particular James Schoolcraft. The Museum recently obtained the loan of two ledgers from Philip ruiter's store in Philipsburg. Within them I located a small acount in the name of James Schoolcraft. James is known to have been in the Missisquio Bay area around 1795, possibly a little earlier. The next record of him that I had located was 1813 when he had returned to Vermont. It was not until 1825 that he came back to Quebec and settled in St. Ignace de Stanbridge. The ledger record shows that in 1800 he was actually still in the Bay area and was living on South River. That probably means he was at either Mandigo's Landing or Mitchel's Landing in Noyan. This is a substantial distance from Philip ruiter's store and would have entailed 4 or 5 miles road travel to a ferry trip, also of about 4 or 5 miles. While that may not seem far today, these were dirt roads with a cart doing about 2 mph and a boat of similar speed. i.e. half a day's travel each way, maybe even requiring an overnight stop in Philipsburg. 1800 March 5th By 1/2 Bushel Pease by James Schoolcraft 2 6 April 14 By cash 6 June 23rd By cash left by Mr. Schft of South river for fulling Cloth 34 yds - suppond at 10d pr. yd 28/4 1 8 4 ---------- By drefs my Cloth last fall is 1 ---------- 2 11 4 NOTE: If you are trying to check the tally, the currency is £ s. d. where 12 pence [d.] equals 1 shilling [s.] and 20 shillings [s.] equals 1 pound [£].

    3. This morning there was another front page story in the Ottawa Citizen regarding a Quebec cemetery charging $2200.00 to permit burial in a plot "Purchased" in 1901 in Aylmer Quebec. In the story this time it states that Quebec Law changed in 1999 permitting this, in this case the 99 year lease. I have the full story but am not sure if copying and pasting is permitted. Again this was a privately managed Roman Catholic cemetery. Is there anyone on this site that is familiar with this Quebec law that permits this and could explain the law to us. 1. [QC-ETANGLO] English Genealogy Conference
    2. Predmile
    3. Hello Everyone, In June 2007, Quebec Family History Society will be holding a genealogy conference at McGill University in Montreal. All talks will be in English. There is going to be a guided tour of the Montreal Archives. Some of the speakers will speak about accessing land records via the internet, legal records, & there will be talk about Eastern Townships land records. Often people overlook the legal records, & the land records - not realizing how much data these contain for genealogists. One lady searched for years - trying to find her ancestor's marriage. The place & date of the marriage was found in the land records. People who didn't own land are often included in the land records, as well. - The legal records are wonderful for putting "meat on the bones" of our ancestors. There will be a session dedicated to "Ask the Experts" whereby we can ask the panel of experts specific questions that have proven difficult to answer. Please check out the website www.qfhs.ca & look for details of Roots 2007 Confernce for a list of the speakers & other needed info. (Accommodations, food, directions etc) Sign up now, as the price goes up in May. Will look forward to meeting many of you there!! Pennie
