    3. Hi Laury, Its me again. Since I have a LEAVITT ancestor I checked my Family Group Record and indeed my ancestor is the same Deacon John Leavitt as mentioned in Phyllis' book. I am descended from his first wife through their daughterElizabeth who married Samuel Judkins. None of their progeny migrated to Canada. My link to Hatley is the Little Family and the BEANs. My father was born in Hereford. Which one of John's children leads down to Nathaniel? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Laury Walkey" <polgara@telus.net> To: <QC-ETANGLO@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 17, 2007 12:19 PM Subject: [QC-ETANGLO] Village of Hatley, Stanstead Co. > I've read that the village of Hatley was originally called Charleston. > Does anyone know when it became known as Hatley? > > Also, I've found marriage entries for the family I'm researching in the > Church of England register books for Hatley in the 1820s to mid 1830s, > but found no baptisms. 3. Hi Jackie. Yes, those dates are correct. It would be interesting to find out why so long. Were his parents still living in 1893? Not that they would have to be, but he may have been baptized at a different location as an infant and that record was lost. In 1853 many of the more remote areas only had traveling preachers who often did not keep good records or they became lost or what ever. Another avenue for you to search is The Megantic County Historical Society. The contact I have is: Mildred Robinson, President, 3172 route Dublin, Inverness, PQ. G0S 1K0 Phone: 418-485-2247. They have a computerised index of the census 1861-71-81 for Leeds. They also have one for Inverness for 1861 along with the records of children born after 1861. If you the above, you may find that the book I used is available and for sale. If you have a number of families in Megantic County, it might be worth it. Good luck. 3. Hi, I have extensive roots in Hatley, Barnston, and Coaticook. There are volumes of info re The Eastern Townships at Bishops University in Lennoxville which is just south of Sherbrooke Quebec. I researched there a few years ago and found these volumes to be very helpful: BIRTHS, MARRIAGES, AND DEATHS from 1815-1879. These from the DISTRICT OF ST.FRANCIS from the Church Records of 16 denominations, Catholics NOT included. The info given records parents, church of baptism, and witnesses. I think you can contact the University and perhaps they will research for you without fee if the request isn't too extensive. Or contact the Archives for access to the records I have mentioned above. I am sorry I don't have the appropriate URLs for you. 3. Hello Laury, My Mother-in-law and her family (the Page/Paige family) lived in Hatley, but were baptized, etc., in St. John's Anglican Church in Eastman, Stanstead Co. That may have been because other members of the family lived in Eastman. Worth a try, anyway. There are many Leavitts in the Page family, but not in direct lineage to her family. Good luck! 3. I've read that the village of Hatley was originally called Charleston. Does anyone know when it became known as Hatley? Also, I've found marriage entries for the family I'm researching in the Church of England register books for Hatley in the 1820s to mid 1830s, but found no baptisms. Were there other churches in the area during this time period that the family could have used instead? The bulk of the family converted to Mormonism in the mid-1830s and migrated towards Utah, but I'm curious regarding the lack of baptismal records prior to their conversion. I'm researching the LEAVITT family of Hatley & Compton areas. Thanks kindly. Cheers, -- Laury Walkey (Miss) BC, Canada

    3. My 3rd great-grandmother was a Johnston; Jane D. Johnston was born on Nov 2, 1828 in Ascot, Québec. She was the daughter of Samuel Johnston and Jennie Breckenridge. Samuel and Jennie emigrated circa 1821 "from the extreme north of Ireland" and "settled in the vicinity of Huntingville," Québec. Jane married Daniel Thompson, widower, on Jan 13, 1846 at the Episcopal Church in Ascot. Jane died on Sep 3, 1920 in Sherbrooke at the age of 91 years, 10 months and 1 day. She was buried on Sep 6, 1920 in St. Peter's Cemetery in Sherbrooke. Children with Daniel Thompson Charlotte Anne Thompson Line continued b. Jan 14, 1847, d. Nov 26, 1926 Louisa Thompson b.
