"The Hist. of Stanstead Co" does give the parents of Squire as Caleb and Jemima. However, the "Howe Gen." gives Jonas and Sarah (Wheeler) Howe as his parents. I also have a note that the Plainfield, CT VR's 2:22 show him as a son of Jonas and Sarah. Squire's wife, Phebe, is called both Pierce and Paine. The Plainfield Congr. Ch. rec. give her name as Pierce. The "Wheeler Gen." p. 553 (by A.G. Wheeler), say her name was Paine. Hope this doesn't confuse the issue to much for you as it has for me :). The 1860 US Census at Ancestry shows Squire Howe residing in the Town of Ithaca, Richland County, Wisconsin. Squire is reported as age 60, born in Vermont, occupation farmer. His wife Lucina, is reported as age 53, born in Vermont Residing with them is Elias Howe, age 17, laborer, born in Lower Canada. The next household shows Rufus Howe, age 23, laborer, born in Lower Canada and Holliday Howe (female), age 30, born in Lower Canada. I haven't found anything yet to tie them to Squire and Lucina, though. IN the 1880 Census, Elias Howe, age 38, still resides in Ithaca, Wisconsin. In the household are his wife Minnie, age 30, Son Franklin, age 8, and daughter Kate, age 3. The Wisconsin state Census of 1905 Shows Elias F. Howe, age 62, still in Ithaca, Wisconsin Wife Mary J.; daughter Nona S, age 21, born in Wisconsin, is a school teacher Son Harry A, age 16, born in Wisconsin, is a farm laborer. Elias, Mary and Harry show up in the 1910 Census with son Harry still living at home; the 1920 Census records just Elias and Mary in the household. The 1910 census also reports Elias's arrival date as about 1855 The History of Royalston, Vermont (available on Ancestry) has a large segment on Squire Howe's father (also Squire Howe). Of your Squire, it notes born 13 July 1800; married Lucina Humphrey. (page 827) Howe genealogies. Edward Howe of Lynn, Mass Abraham How of Watertown and Marlborough, Mass James How of Roxbury and Ipswich, Mass Abraham Howe of Roxbury, Mass - also at Ancestry, has additional information on the earlier lines, but nothing on your Squire, as he was not born in Vernon, which was the area in discussion
Hello Everyone, I am in Montreal & do not know very much about what is available at the Arhives of Canada. Quebec Province's Archives have some notaries on m/film - but we cannot borrow the films. They must be viewed at the various archives branches that have copies of the m/films. Plus, there are notaries whose records have never been m/filmed. To view them, we must visit the archives branch in Quebec Province that houses the originals. We will then have access to the actual documents If a specific notary's files have been microfilmed, we MUST use the m/film, regardless of how atrocious the handwriting may be.The majority of notary records for the Eastern Twps (if not on microfilm) will be found in Sherbrooke archives. Hope this helps P

Hello all: If you'd like a list of the notarial records that are on microfilm in the Quebec National Archives collection, organized by the region they served, you can download a free catalogue from http://www.ffsq.qc.ca/microfilm.html Hope that helps Marlene Simmons
The Druin collection is just a combination of indexes and repertoires of the particular notaries for whom Druin acquired those items. It contains none of the acts themselves. The LDS microfilms are films of the actual records of the particular notaries that the LDS acquired films for (some also have indexes). Some notaries are in BOTH the LDS and Druin collections. Some are only in one or the other. Many more are in neither. If Pennie Redmile is watching, maybe she can clarify the next bit... I believe the LDS films were merely copies of microfilms that are held in the Canadian Archives. The Canadian Archives also has many more notary records that have not been filmed and are still on paper. I believe that anyone in Canada can get hold of copies of the films at the Archives through inter-library loan. I have been told several times by others that people in the USA can also do this through their local library. My own experience is that my local library is unable or unwilling to do this. --------- One thing about where these guys were operating... When I created that URL that I posted, I noticed that one of the links was not classified by District - its just called "Quebec Notariat". That link actually seems to contain an index of Notary names. (Films FHL US/CAN Film 963357 & 963358). I've not personally seen those films but they MIGHT be a complete list of ALL the notaries that were registered - if they are copies of the registration records. Therefore they might ALSO include the District they were in. If so, that would be a very valuable reference as it would be complete (or at least as complete as anything could be). I shall probably order those two myself in a month or so but for the moment I have other things going on. Meanwhile, if someone else does get those two films, please let us know what the content actually is so we can assess how useful they might be. > -----Original Message----- > From: qc-etanglo-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:qc-etanglo-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of M_Ardron1 > Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2007 16:13 > To: qc-etanglo@rootsweb.com > Subject: [QC-ETANGLO] Notaries > > > First - a heartfelt THANK-YOU to Dr. David Ellis for his > instructions about finding the notaries in a certain geographical area. > > Secondly - Am I correct in assuming that the complete actual > records [not just indexes] are NOT available in the Ancestry.ca > Druoin Collection but can be seen on LDS films? First - a heartfelt THANK-YOU to Dr. David Ellis for his instructions about finding the notaries in a certain geographical area. Secondly - Am I correct in assuming that the complete actual records [not just indexes] are NOT available in the Ancestry.ca Druoin Collection but can be seen on LDS films?
