The British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa has been working on this project for several years now. My husband has transcribed data for three years. There is still a lot more work to do and the staff at the archives have their own preessures in trying to get our data ready to post. If you think an ancestor may have been a home child and you do not find him/her in the database, don't give up. There is still a lot more to come. Marg

The Montreal Witness send Margaret to Ireland c 1882 to write about the plight of the Irish farmer. Thank you in advance for your help. Tom Beggs
If anyone is related to or researching a William ELLIS who came from Liverpool England in 1910 as a 14-year-old Home Child, I have a photograph of him. The picture is actually of my grandfather (George Howard) and William as boys taken just before they sailed together to Canada. I looked up Ellis on the new Home Children National Archives site (which is pretty good, by the way) and he did indeed sail on the same ship as my grandfather (the Corsican) and had the same destination - Sherbrooke (Gibbs Home for Boys). In my family oral history there is no further mention of Ellis, so I guess they lost touch once they got to Canada, but Ellis' name is on the back of the photo. One point of interest though is that my grandfather said he saw the Titanic as it was being built near the place where his ship was sailing from. My grandfather ended up in Shefford Co. - dropped off the train at Cleary Station. The photograph is actually a very nice example of the way in which the Homes attempted to portray the children as "good, clean, healthy, diligent-looking" in their standard little suits with the short pants. If anyone is interested, contact me. Heather Howard-Bobiwash Toronto

We're new to the list and have information on the following from Megantic County. 1. Thomas EAGER, from Ireland (possibly Wicklow County) 2. Robert EAGER (and sibling Thomas Eager), also born in Ireland, married Martha PORTER. They married in Quebec City. Three PORTERs were witnesses at their wedding: Joseph, Joseph and Henry. One Joseph was a blacksmith in Quebec. The other was from Leeds, as were Robert and Martha. We suspect the four Porters to be relatives (father and 3 children?). 3. William EAGER, born in Inverness, 1837. (siblings Thomas, Sarah, Susan, Joseph, Robert, Henry, John, Jane, Charles Edwin, Mary Ann, and Samuel John) married Nancy Jane (Ann) BYERS, born 1834 in Canada. 4. Martha Porter EAGER, born in Leeds, 1862. (siblings Ann Macauley, Robert, Sarah Jane, and Margaret Susan) 1. Peter HAMILTON (sibling John, parents John HAMILTON and Mary SHAW) married Ann McCURDY (siblings Donald, Robert, Lauchlon, Mary, William, Janet, Christian; parents John McCURDY and Janet TAYLOR). Both originated from Arran Island, Bute, Scotland. 2. John E. HAMILTON, born in Halifax, Quebec 1859. (siblings David, James, Peter J. and Robert) Martha Porter EAGER married John E. HAMILTON in Littleton, NH, USA in 1888. We would welcome hearing from anyone with information on any of these folks. Paula and Rob Petterson

An excellent source of information is Early Canadiana Online (http:\www.canadiana.org) It contains scanned pages of many original early Canadian documents. Among them I found this: History of the Eastern Townships, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada C. M. Day (Montreal: J. Lovell, 1869) on Page 261 is a list of the founders of Bolton Township, and among the many names are Jeremiah Page, Samuel Page, Benjamin Page and Roger Hibbard. Which brings me to my problem. About 3 years ago Roger Chatell of Rhode Island posted queries about a Benjamin PAGE who was married to Elizabeth HIBBARD and who died in St. Gabriel-de-Brandon in 1860. Being interested in the PAGE surname I wrote him and said I would keep my eyes open for more info on Benjamin Pages. Now I have found Benjamin PAGE and a HIBBARD on the same document, and he has changed his e-mail, so I can not reach him anymore. If anyone out there knows Roger's new e-mail address, please pass this on. If anyone has information about the descendants of any of the PAGE families in Bolton Township, please send that to me. Hello Canada, I am researching the surname GAULEY, which is in every province of the country. My great-grandmother was Mary GAULEY, who married Robert SHANNON,Jr., about 1875, in or around the Grenville, Lachute, Arundel area of Quebec, Canada. Some names of the men in the pioneer family were Thomas Gauley, William Gauley and of course Eliza Gauley. The information I have shows the matriarch of the clan was ELIZA GAULEY. From a brief outline written in 1962 by ALICE GAULEY-NICHOLSON, Eliza Gauley's children were: Elizabeth Gauley; mother of Alice Gauley Nicholson. Sarah Gauley; Kenneth Ault's mother. Mary Gauley; Wilfred and Lenore Shannon's mother and my great-grandmother. James Gauley George Gauley David Gauley. Taking from a letter I have, the Gauley family in Canada was begun by the Gauley brothers who emigrated to Canada from Ireland around 1835. There were possibly three of them. An unidentified brother returned to Ireland. The rest of the family settled in the Grenville, Lachute and Arundel areas of Quebec, but as the family grew, they spread out across the country. The letter I have, written in December 1962, was given the return address of "710 Smyth Road "Elmville Acres", Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Alice Gauley Nicholson says she was married around 1951 to a military man by the name of Mr. J.D. "Nick" Nicholson, who in 1962 was 17 months from completing his military service time and he planned on a career as a bookkeeper. This was Alice's second marriage. She refers to her son Captain Davison Curling, an Army man who on December 11, 1962, took his wife Lois and their two daughters, to Germany on a three year assignment. Alice's mother Elizabeth Gauley passed away in 1945. My great-grandmother Gauley-Shannon, passed away in 1912 in Michigan USA. Alice may have had a brother named Harry. The letter refers to "Kenneth and Elsie" whom I'm assuming are the Ault's; and an "Aunt Bertha." The name "Harry Davison" is there, probably related to Alice's first husband. He may have been a pharmacist. "Nick " had other brothers who apparently were in the Navy. If anyone recognizes these names or circumstances, please let me know. I'll gladly share any family information I have. Margaret Thank you so much for such an unexpected and indepth look at George KERR--I only wish he was one of ours. Unfortunately to this time we have no George KERRs in our family of that time period. I'll pass this info along to our KERR webmistress in case we later discover he is a distant cousin from our prolific ancestors in Scotland. Thank you again for doing the look-up for us. Regards Roberta Kerr Turner Valley, Alberta, Canada
Margaret What years does the book cover? REgards Roberta
Hello everyone: This book, 'History of Compton County (Quebec)' by L.S.Channell (1896) is a treasure trove. I found it available from genealogy.com for $49.95 canadian funds. Cat # 101213 (ISBN 1 - 894378 - 13 -). I had previously ordered it thru my local library 'inter-library loan' program (have it for two weeks) and I have found references to many of the names I have been researching in the eastern townships, mostly Planche, Laberee, Wilson, that are related to my 'tree'. The photoengravings (what we would call photocopies today) are absolutely wonderful, and show what it was like in 1896, and gives an outline of the history of the different townships, people, and who married who, and their children. I have ordered this book because it will be a priceless treasure to have to show my family where their greatgreat's came from, and the original homesteads...Margaret
Does anyone know the history of the S. SWEET Cemetery in Sutton? Which Sweet was it named after, and was the property originally owned by the Sweet family? Thanks. Kathy
Does anyone know exactly how many children Enoch Martin SWEET had with both of his wives, Lydia BATES & Mary TURNER? They lived around Sutton circa 1820-1880. Thanks. Kathy
