    3. Two sites are a must for a visit La Société de Généalogie des cantons de l'Est in Sherbrooke ia worth an extended visit. It has the same archives as Montreal, plus those specific to the Townships. It holds microfilms on behalf of the Quebec National Archives for the District of St Francis. Most of the answere can probably be found in the SGCE publications. Web is at http://www.genealogie.org/club/sgce/sgce.htm For the Townships, some of the unique records, plus newspapers and collections are at Bishop's University Old McGreer web details at http://www.ubishops.ca/library_info/lib-old.htm These two sites are concerned with larger regions, while history societies are oriented to a specific community. Example, the History Society of Sherbrooke in the same building as the SGCE, is primarily concerned with the city area, not the District of St Francis. From Montreal she will travel to the Eastern Township area and then will be staying in Enosburg Falls, Vermont to do research in the northern part of the Vermont and the Townships. Does anyone have suggestions where she might research while in Montreal and also if there are historical societies throughout some of the Eastern Township towns. 3. Hi. I am still looking for the date of marriage of Elizabeth Sweet b. May 8, 1843, d. Nov. 6, 1914 and Hollis Bunker who were married about 1910. Both Hollis and Elizabeth were from the Shefford Co. area. Elizabeth was the daughter of Horace Sweet and Weltha Capron. I believe she was married before she married Hollis and I would REALLY love to find out the name of that first husband to solve a family mystery. Thanks for any help. Bette

Augusta b. bet. 1786-1787. Our family records show all these people to have been born in "Canada". Census data confirms this for three of the five. "Canada" probably means PQ and probably Eastern Townships based on other family data. Caroline and her grandparents emmigrated into the U.S.A. at some time before 1860.

    3. I have just resubscribed to the list and want to give a brief outline of my Eastern Townships interests. My earliest Elliott Ancestor is Jeremiah (1780) and Ann Trotter (1782) Elliott I descend through their son George born about 1810 in Ireland married Mary Bell and through their son John Elliott born 17 May 1839 in Ulverton, Quebec. John Married Mary Ann Lyster born 03 Oct 1846 Kingsley, Durham, Quebec, daughter of Philip Lyster and Jane Martin. Am most interested in any old Elliott pictures!! Philip Lyster was born 1819 Clonaslee, Ireland and Jane was born 29 Jan 1826 to Thomas Martin and Sarah Cummings born 29 Aug 1802 in either Wheelock or Lyndon, Vermont. Sarah Cummings was the daughter of Adams Cummings and Leah Hubbard born 1774 in Chesterfield, Cheshire, New Hampshire. This family immigrated to Canada about 1816 and Adams (or Noah) died in Durham in 1822. They may have been Free Will baptists. Many children from the line of Philip Lyster and Jane Martin went back to Vermont & New Hampshire to live. I am most interested in finding any leads to Thomas Martin (or George Thomas) who was married to Sarah Cummings who died Jan 20, 1858 and buried in Holy Trinity Church Cemetery, Kirkdale. I know nothing of Thomas Martin. He would have been born around 1795/1800 and may have gone back to Vermont after his wifes death. Some of Their children are: 1. Jane b. 29 Jan 1826, married Philip Lyster(My Line) 2. Emily b. 23 May 1827, m. George Fee 15 Oct 1846 and M. Thomas Montgomery 3. Sarah b. 06 Oct 1828 4. Thomas b. 21 Feb 1830, m. Ruby Judd 5. Lurinda b. 07 Oct 1831 6. Edward William b. 04 Nov 1833, m. Esther Lyster 17 Feb 1877 7. Leah b. 19 Feb 1836 8. Eliza b. 15 July 1837 9. Henry b. 06 Sept 1839 10. George b. 03 eb 1842 11. Esther b. 22 Mar 1844 12. Arthur or Albert b. 28 Nov 1848 Some of the Martin Boys would have been the right age for the Cival war if there is anyone out there that could have information on the boys from the area that joined up for the American cival war.

    1. [QC-ETANGLO] Missing and Persumed Dead
    2. Nina L. Olney
    3. Hello Fellow Searchers, My name is Nina Olney and I am new to your list. The OLNEY family were some of the first to take advantage of the benefits arising from inexpensive land in Nova Scotia. During the second generation two and possibly three family members have gone missing. I presume they died in Quebec, but need some expert help in finding them. Here is our mystery. Amasa "Brown" OLNEY (b. 1791, RI) went to Canada after the marriage of his youngest daughter, sometime between 1845-1865. We think he may have gone to Shipton, Richmond, Quebec to see his cousin Enos OLNEY. Both Amasa and Enos died in 1865. Amasa's son John B. OLNEY may have gone with him to Canada (b. 1821, MA). Other than the birth of John B. OLNEY, nothing more is known of him. Neither ENOS OLNEY, AMASA OLNEY, or JOHN B. OLNEY's graves have been found. I would assume if any of them died in Shipton, they would have been buried there. If NOT where? We know Amasa made a will, for his grown children in Massachusetts received quite a bit of money about 1866. We know the will is not in Rhode Island or Massachusetts, so I assume it might be in Canada where he was living. Where would a will be filed? Would someone living in Canada, file their will in New Hampshire or another border state to make sure the will was honored in the US?? Does anyone know if there was an epidemic in 1865 and a mass grave was used? Canada is a completely new area of research for me and I am totally unfamiliar with how the government worked in 1865, other than vitals were kept by the church. I would welcome any advice, direction or help in finding these three lost relatives. I don't mind doing the digging myself, just give me direction on where to sink my spade! Thanks a bunch for ALL help! Sincerely, Nina Nina L. Olney Flagstaff, Arizona Looking for OLNEY/ONLEY/ONLY/D'OYLEY

    3. I am trying to identify or eliminate various McHargs from my line. I found the following Mahargs (most McHargs seem to be identified as Maharg in early records) on the Family Tree Maker Irish Immigrants CD. Does anyone recognize the first group which appears to be a family and where they might have settled in Quebec. I don't believe it was the Eastern Townships, but not sure. Thanks. Immigrated 1833 from Co Londonderry, Parish Desertoghill, Townland Gortycloghan to Quebec John Maharg 25 Sarah Maharg 22 Robert Maharg 3 Mary Maharg 3 months In 1834, William Maharg 30 immigrated from the same place and went to St. John, NB
