    3. Hi! I need the same information for the marriage of Georgetown residents at the Church of Scotland near Ormstown. Was Georgetown a small town near Ormstown or near Montreal? Where can the records be found? (and under what name, would it be Presbyterian?) My ancestors were named STRACHAN, and this marriage record pertains to one of their daughters. Thanks, Joanne in California -------------------------- -----Original Message----- From: Alex Casey <acasey@fgi.net> To: QC-ETANGLO-L@rootsweb.com <QC-ETANGLO-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, March 28, 2000 4:50 PM Subject: [QC-ETANGLO] Church of Scotland, Montreal >Hi, >My Great Grandparents were married in 1848 at Georgetown, Church of Scotland, Montreal. 2. I just found this at the Stanstead-Journal's web site under "History". I know that there have been HOUSE family queries addressed to ETANGLO in the past. Hope this helps someone! The Stanstead-Journal is a weekly column which changes every Wednesday. You are certain to find something good each week!! Jackie Forrestal http://www.stanstead-journal.com This is the information for HOUSE ancestors: 75 Years Ago (March 26, 1925) WHEN MEN WERE MEN Harrison F. House, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. H. Huckins, at 6:30 Wednesday morning, at the age of 91 years and 5 months. He was born on a farm in Stanstead township, and sold goods "on the road" for sixty-eight years, remaining "in the harness" until his ninetieth year. He kept about and was a familiar figure on the streets here until some two weeks ago. The funeral will take place at the home of his daughter Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mr. House is survived by one brother, Edward House of Beebe.

    2. Pennie Redmile
    3. Hello Listers, Today, I had to look through an 1988 Sherbrooke newspaper for a death.. & stumbled upon an article written by Bernard Epps (in two issues). Had forgotton Mr Epps used to have a history column in this newspaper where he described some of the E Twp 's "colourful" past citizens. This story : Nov 4 & Nov 11 1988 - discussed one Alexander Burns..from E Bolton (bn nr Lake Champlain in 1816) . It was a murder story & Mr Burns was hanged (in Montreal) on Sep 6,1861. Mr Epps refers the reader to the Waterloo Advertiser of May 31, 1861. -- Pennie

    1. Re: [QC-ETANGLO] Maps of the Siegniories

    3. The bridge at Pike River, is crossing (naturally) Pike River, or Rivière aux Brochets. The reference in the Proces Verbal was to a bridge over Black Creek. I don't have a period map, but do have a current topographical map of the area, 1:50,000 scale, which is Lacolle, Sheet 31 H/3. It shows Ruisseau (Creek) Black running south through Venise-en-Québec into Baie de Venise at Plage (Beach) Venise, and a small bridge on Route 202 crossing the creek (Grid Reference 467938). The area of Missisquoi Bay to the east of Baie de Venise, is Grande Baie, where Pike River flows into Baie Missisquoi and Lake Champlain. The land area here is shown as swampy, and no road currently follows the shore line around. As David Ellis said, from Philipsburg, you would have drive north to the town of Pike River to cross the river and then head south west on Route 202 to Venise-en-Québec. At the point where this road crosses the boundary between the present day municipalities of St Pierre de Véronne à Pike River and Venise en Québec, it turns due west until it hits the top of the bay, and then skirts around over Black Creek, and carries around until it reaches a point where it again turns due west to Clarenceville, and Noyan. The boundary may have been the original boundary between the Seigniories of St Armand and Noyan mentioned as the start of the road. From there to the Black Creek bridge is not quite a mile. It would also seem from the description, that Ephraim Wheeler's farm was close to the point at which the road hits the bay. There are many small black squares on the map indicating the cottages that crowd the area around the bay. Just before the road reaches them, there is another road branching north towards St Sébastien. In the north east corner of this intersection, there are two buildings indicated, which would likely be a farmstead. This could be the location of the Wheeler farm, or very close to it (Grid Reference 475936). Hope this is of some help.
