    3. (chuckling over use of the words, straightlaced, perky and bind) I wonder if perhaps you mean the Spirella Corset Company? My grandmother, Olivia Ethel Lester Halpin, sold their corsets door-to-door in Canada and the US between 1914 and 1934. A single mother, she was the sole support of 3 children. They lived well and she sent one of them to college. 1. [QC-ETANGLO] Hamilton & migration pattern
    2. Paul Franklin
    3. Hello, I know where he is buried but where in Canada did he come from. James M. Hamilton was b. 11 Oct 1831 somewhere in Canada. He may have been Ulster-Scotch. He migrated to the US and settled in Missouri about 1850 and married Mary Elizabeth/ Elizabeth Dabney ( she was from New Brunswick) in Missouri. That's where he died. First question any one out there have a James M Hamilton in their lines? Second question. Can anyone take an educated guess why the move to Missouri? I do know that the family was timber cutters. But why Missouri, why not further into Canada? What's the migration pattern out of the Eastern Townships? Opps sorry that's question three. Thank you very much, gayle

What was the name of the factory? What type of clothing did they produce? Does anyone know if there has been a history book written for that region which might include a chapter on the industries that once existed in that region? Thanks for the input. 3. There used to be a corset factory called Spencers located between Rock Island and Beebe. They were a straightlaced firm for many years, and despite a perky showing, they found themselves strapped for cash and fell into a bind some years ago. 3. Hello listers, Was at the newspaper archives today - but only had a free half hour. Thought the following might be of some interest though. Dec 4 1909 Sherbrooke Record page 7 An item saying Mrs Wilson of Newport Vt had been allowed into Canada to visit her husband, who was in jail in Sherbrooke on a "serious charge". The item further mentioned that Mrs Wilson had been "turned back earlier as an undesirable" ! ++++++++++++++++++++++ Dec 6 1909 page 1 An article mentioning the farmers around West Bolton - Stukely were suffering from loss of their stock. The hardest hit was a Hiram Phelps who'd lost 4 cows. Vets & Gov. Inspectors had been called in but couldn't identify the problem.

Miltimore (gcm@glen-net.ca) The Natural Resources Canada geographical names query at: http://GeoNames.NRCan.gc.ca/english/query.html did not have any match for Freeport, but it does have a link to the Quebec toponomy site, 'Noms et lieux de Quebec', at: http://www.toponymie.gouv.qc.ca/default.asp This site provided two hits for Freeport. One was of type Lieu-dit, or place known as, in the Municipalite regionale de compte (MRC) Brome-Missisquoi, in the municipalite of Cowansville V. The other was the name of a bridge of type 'Pont couvert', or covered bridge, at the same location. The topograhical map reference for both is 31H/02, which is the whole Cowansville sheet of the 1:50,000 scale topo maps. It does give the latitude of 45°13' and longitude of 72°46' . This led me to a suburb of Cowansville, shown as Freeport on the map, on the CPR railway line to the north west about 2km from the centre of town. There is a covered bridge across the Yamaska river nearby, on a small road that leads up to East Farnham. The topographical grid reference is XF750090. The official Quebec Provincial road map shows the symbol for a covered bridge, although it does not indicate Freeport. It is near the junction of routes 104 and 139 to the west of Cowansville. Since it gives the present day combined county of Brome-Missisquoi, we have to go back to the older designations of the counties, which I believe had Cowansville in Missisquoi. The map shows it within the Canton de Dunham, which would be in Missisquoi. Bill Brady, Ottawa, ON

Thank you, Christine Hi Christine, In Britain, what we call Trust Companies are called Building Societies, so the term might have been used the same way here in the 1870's. They are involved with real estate transactions, mortgages and loans, etc. I would be interested if by any chance there are Montle or McCarty entries from Stanbridge or Bedford, or Brady or Renihan in Dunham or Shefford.
