    1. [QC-ETANGLO] A question about "concessions" in the 1831 census...
    2. David J. Ellis
    3. Does anyone know the location of the concessions that are referred to in the 1831 Stanbridge census? I need to figure out approximately where these were. Are they in any way related to the 'ranges' that are defined in the 1801 land patent for the town of Stanbridge? If 'concession' is just another term for 'range' then the question is easily answered as I have the ranges plotted out already.

    3. On Richmond, Quebec, I know that the Presbyterian church there, of which my great grandfather John MacLeod was minister from 1887 to 1892, burned down, destroying the records. At least this is what I was told by my grandfather, who many years later found himself unable to prove when and where he was born. 3. Thank you all for your prompt response to my query about searching National Archives vs Eastern Townships facilities. It appears I have no reason to go to the National Archives in Ottawa, so will be able to spend my time with relations, dead or alive, in Ontario and the Eastern Townships. Thanks again everyone! 3. I will be leaving in less than a month travelling through Ontario and on to Richmond, Quebec searching for dead people and getting acquainted and reacquainted with cousins. I have been waiting now for six weeks for Census Film from National Archives through inter-library loan. If they arrive before my departure...great! If they don't arrive in time would I be better off (more successful) in searching personally at the National Archives in Ottawa or would I be able to find Census and/or birth, marriage and death information at the local museums or libraries in the Eastern Townships? 1. Re: [QC-ETANGLO] St. Sebastian, Quebec?
    2. Rachel Carr
    3. Dear Maura, Try this site: http://www.toponymie.gouv.qc.ca/default.asp The simplest way to look for a town is to click "Liste" above the search box for municipality (lower left hand corner of page); then, click on the first letter of the place you are looking for and scroll through the list of places to find what you want. Once you click the correct town, it will automatically enter it in the municipality search box for you. Click "recherche" for a list of all places associated with the place you chose. Scroll through the list to find the municipality (if that is what you are looking for). If it is listed in red, click on it to go to a map and then you can zoom in on the area to varying degrees. St. Sebastian is north of Lac Megantic which is west of Sherbrooke and just north of the New Hampshire border. Hope this helps you. Rachel

    1. [QC-ETANGLO] St. Sebastian, Quebec?
    2. Treelo
    3. While at the National Archives in Waltham, Massachusetts, I pulled a border crossing card from St. Albans, VT for a David OFFICER. The card lists his birthplace as St. Sebastian (no province or county listed). I cannot locate a St. Sebastian anywhere on any map. Was there a town named St. Sebastian that has changed its name? Is St. Sebastian a part of another town? Is it listed wrong? FYI- David OFFICER later settled in Sutton, Brome Co., Quebec. I assume it would be near that, but possibly not. Any ideas appreciated!! -Maura Officer Massachusetts

    1. [QC-ETANGLO] OFFICER surname
    2. Treelo
    3. I am researching the surname OFFICER and looking for any info on this name. I have traced the family back to Sutton, Brome Co., Quebec. The earliest generation I have located is James OFFICER who was born in England and immigrated to Quebec sometime prior to 1841. He married Eliza THOMPSON who was born in Canada and they had at least one child, David OFFICER who was born in 1841, possibly in St. Sebastian (wherever that is). David OFFICER married Jane HOLMES and they had several children in Sutton, Quebec, some of whom remained in the Eastern Townships. Any help on this name would be appreciated! -Maura Officer Massachusetts

    3. St-Sebastien is in Iberville County, on the eastern shore of the Richelieu River. There is also a St-Sebastien in Beauce County, but if your family was in Brome, the Iberville locale is probably a more likely spot to locate your man. 3. I need help in finding information about my Great Great Grandfather, William Devitt. His daughter Jane Devitt (1859-1930) married Zepherin Menard Aug 30 1881 in St Sebastien, Iberville County. Jane was a Protestant who converted to Catholism. She had a sister Mary Devitt who married Hormislas Manseau also at St. Sebastien and a brother Hugh who married Ella Ryan at Henryville. I believe there was a son Liam born abt 1857. I have a copy of an 1861 Canadian Census record that shows a family for William Devitt living in East Farnham, I think this may be my family because they show a daughter named Jane, aged 2 years born in Vermont. Any help with this family would be most appreciated.

    1. [QC-ETANGLO] French Language Memos Needed for MPs & Newspapers
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. The following is a recent message sent to me:- I appreciate all you and Gordon Watts plus others have done to support and document reasons the census records should be released. I do think it would enhance our campaign to MP's if someone could draft a short French or bilingual message that we could send to the francophone MPs in Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. There are a lot of these members and we need them as supporters if the issue comes to a vote in the House of Commons. As a resident of Ottawa I know the importance of bilingualism and we could lose the support of francophone MPs if we send them English-only letters. Are there any genealogists in Quebec who could help by giving us a French message? ============================ To all:- I agree with the above message, have asked one of the committee members to date -- but no reply. We need a two or three paragraph message (with English translation) about the need to have the post-1901 census records released. The same message could be sent to the French language newspapers thus reaching many not on internet. Check the following URLs for information re census, please. Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Check to see if your Member of Parliament will agree to release <http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census> Read THE MYTHS OF CENSUS by Gordon Watts - may be printed <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html> {NOTE:- The English translation is for myself -- one who did not keep up with the French language -- I read it, only.}

    3. I am searching for two children who arrived in Quebec in 1867 from Scotland as part of the family of David KERR and Catherine DUNCAN. They travelled on the S.S. St. Andrew departing Port Glasgow 19 June 1867 on a 32 day voyage. The two children are David KERR age 13, (b abt 1854), and Margaret KERR age 9 (b abt 1858), on the ship's list. My grgrandfather David KERR was described as a widower when he married Catherine DUNCAN in Scotland in 1860. These children may have been from his first marriage in Scotland. We have had no luck yet in searching for this first wife, and we have found no trace of these children after their arrival in Quebec. The family originally lived in Compton Co. then bought a farm at 1244 Spooner Pond Road in Richmond County where they raised ten children...as far as we have been able to determine, not including David and Margaret. David and Catherine already had another son named David (Duncan on the ship's list) who became my grandfather. Any help out there? Regards Roberta from Alberta

    1. [QC-ETANGLO] Still hoping!
    2. I am still hoping someone out there might know anything on Helen Catherine Hausen and Wesley Galbraith marriage. It would have been about 1908 or 1909. I believe they were married in Montreal, but it is possible she met Wesley while she was in Europe and they married before they went home to Montreal. I hope they were married in Montreal, if they were married in Europe it could have been in France, Switzerland, England or a number of other countries. Also I am looking for the marriage date of Madge Hausen to Richard C. Lawrence, probably in Montreal also. Richard C. Lawrence owned the house at 92 Somerville, Westmount, Montreal around 1904 to 1910. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Catherine In Riverside, California
