I have recently received several land grants in which my 5th great grandfather and two of his sons applied for in the 1780's and 1790's. Most were in the area of the Eastern Townships.I also have a list of all those that took the oath at Missisquoi Bay in 1795. In most of these documents it lists their residence as Campbell's Segniory. I believe this to be a part of Christie's Manor since this is where they eventually settled. Has anyone ever heard of this before, could it be possible that this seigniory may have been a part of Vermont before the official boundaries were drawn between Canada and the USA? R. J. I have been looking for copies of various land grants in the area that contain references to either Schoolcraft's or Boomhower's. Would it be possible for you to check if any of those names appear in the land grants and if so to let me know the title of the document. I have some documents already so a title would help determine if you have one I'm not yet familiar with or not. I believe I probably already have the list of those that took the oath at Missisquoi Bay that you refer to. My copy runs to four pages and lists where they currently are and where they intend to settle. Its dated between April 26 and July 25, 1795. First name on my list is Benjamin Towner from St. Armand intending to settle in Dunham. Other documents that I have (in case they would help you) are: A March 1795 letter from Henry Caldwell, the list of Associates and statement of recommendation, April 1795 response by the Land Committee, and January 1796 letter from Henry Caldwell. I also have a document that shows that one person took the oath in 1805. A further two pages list other individuals who also took the oath, but is undated. A modern annotation indicates these people took the oath sometime between 1795 and 1806. This entire list was attached to a schedule of applicants for Crown and Clergy land reserves. That schedule contains dates of applications during 1801. > -----Original Message----- > From: R Shogan [mailto:angiebob@shol.com] > Sent: Saturday, June 17, 2000 2:27 PM > To: QC-ETANGLO-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [QC-ETANGLO] Seigniories > > > I have recently received several land grants in which my 5th > great grandfather and two of his sons applied for in the > 1780's and 1790's. Searching for information on families of David Kennison/Mary Allard and Holloway Kenney/Lucy Williams. David and Mary were married 27 Oct 1823 in West Shefford. Looking for confirmation of births of children: Drusilla, 15 Nov 1824 (?) Levi, 24 May 1824/26 (?) Nathan, 1827/1828 Mary E. 5/25 Mar 1830 Jonathan, Dec 1832 James 2 Feb 1835 Henry, 15 May 1836 Sarah Jane, 27 Jun 1838 Miriam Roxana, 2 Nov 1840/41 Drusilla is the one that really interests me. She was married 18 Jan 1842 in Stukely to Frederick H. Kenny; however, she was listed as Drusilla Bigford Cutler. Family has been traced into the United States, and we are positive (95%) that they are the same person, but why the discrepancy in name. Was she adopted by David & Mary? Was she a ward? Holloway (Halloway) Kenny was born 18 Feb 1781 in Newfane, VT and he married Lucy Williams about 1805. They had at least 5 children in Vermont before moving to Canada about 1818, and I know of at least one more child born there -- the above Frederick H about 1819. Need proof of this birth. Question: Did protestant marriages require a legal contract as catholic ones did? If so, how do I go about locating the pertinent records? Thanks for the help. Margie
Does anyone know anything about my Bell Cousins or my gr grandfather Sylvester? Many in the family were active in buried at St John's Anglican Church in Bromont. [If the bodies of the executed weren't claimed by the family, I think they were buried in Windsor.] Winter [1996/97] edition of "Vermont History" published by the Vermont Historical Society article is titled "Blood Calls for Vengeance" - The history of Capital Punishment in Vermont. It mentions Sylvester but only in a brief passage. This is what it says: "Between 1882 and 1905 Vermont's Courts sentenced only 7 people to die, and only Sylvester Bell, who murdered his wife brutally in 1889, was hanged." The only newspaper account that I have Burlington Clipper -Burlington,VT Jan.2,1890 (no page #'s-buried in middle of paper) " WIFE MURDER AT FAIRFAX Sylvester H. Bell fatally shot his wife at Fairfax on Thursday. It appears that Mrs. Bell had left her husband and applied for a divorce. Thursday she, in company with Deputy Sheriff Hall, went to the house to remove her things. Bell met them very pleasantly and permitted her to pick up her goods. As she was about ready to leave she went up stairs and he followed her. Soon afterward a pistol shot was heard and Officer Hall rushed up, and Bell met him at the door of the room into which Mrs. Bell had gone and handed him the pistol, saying, "Take this. I have done the deed." The ball entered the head of the unfortunate woman, just back of the ear, and she lived about thirty minutes, unconscious. Bell was put under arrest and for a time the excitement, and sympathy was so strong for the murdered woman that it looked as if Bell would be lynched, but the law will now be allowed to take its course. The murdered woman was of comely appearance and of quiet demeanor. Her maiden name was Emma Locke. She was married to Bell some three years ago being his second wife. She was at the time of her death 35 years of age and Bell is 57 years old. Bell's reputation with his wives is bad. He tried to kill his first wife some five years ago and shot her, but the wound was not a fatal one. He was arrested for the crime, tried, and acquitted. He has two daughters and three sons by his first wife and is a farmer by occupation." I would certainly say he qualifies as having a bad reputation with wives!! I am searching for my father who tried for more than 50 years to find out about him but it was a very secure family secret so he also never knew about his cousins. Sylvester's parents also had a bad divorce so I guess there is even more to the story. Here is the family line- parents, siblings, and children. All Sylvester and Marcia's children were born at her sister's "over the border in Canada" at Marcia Farnsworth's sisters home. That may have been Harriette Farnsworth-HUBBELL or Fanny Farnsworth-CAMPBELLE. 1 Samuel BELL b: Jan 25,1804 Shefford,Quebec d:May 29,1888 WShefford (St Johns Anglican-Bromont) +Nancy KENNISON b:1803 NH [w/ Elizabeth Kikzebach '61] d:Abt.1883 res.Shefford Quebec 1861 2 Rachel BELL b:Feb 13,1826 d:Feb 17,1826 (Anglican Cem) Bromont PQ 2 Julia Ann BELL-HUBBELL b:Aug 15,1829 W Shefford Que d: W Enosberg VT +Edward Gilbert HUBBELL b:Abt.1820 d: W Enosberg VT 2 Laura Diana BELL-MORRISON b: Sep 14,1831 d: 1876 W Shefford P.Q. +Peter MORRISON b: W.Shefford P.Q. 2 Sylvester Henry BELL b:1834??WShefford PQ d:Jan 1,1892 [Exec] St.Albans,VT m-1+Marcia Anne FARNSWORTH b: Dec 10,1828 FairfieldVTd:Feb 1,1899 RandophVT (m-2 +Emma LOCK b: Bet.1860 & 1864 New York d: Dec 26,1889 FairfaxVT-29/33) 3 Hattie BELL-AUSTIN b:Dec 8, 861 W Shefford ? I just got a copy of Repertory of births, marriages and burials: the Anglo-Protestants of Megantic County, 1826-1991. I will do lookups if you provide full names (not "all Smiths" for example) and, for copyright reasons, limit your request to one or two individuals. Lin Wright ethelind@athens.net
I know already about Elmwood Cemetery in Sherbrooke. Are there any other cemeteries where Protestants were buried in 1919? I am specifically looking for the burial of Margaret MacKay HUMPHREY who died 4 October 1919 and was buried in Sherbrooke, Quebec. George HUMPHREY is probably buried in the same cemetery. Thanks for your help!! Jackie Forrestal

Hi, Searching for any information whatsoever on the John BULLARD who married Adaline WEBSTER. The marriage took place at the residence of the bride's father in Hatley, Quebec, August 8, 1869. This "may" be the John Bullard shown as living with Nathan Bullard in the 1861 Canadian/Quebec census. I have no information on Adaline's parents or ancestry. All help appreciated. Hi, Searching for any info whatsoever on Nathan Bullard. The 1861 Canadian census shows him living in Quebec along with John, George, and David, ages 15 - 20. A female (Cloe?) b. ca 1805 was also included in the household. As Nathan was shown as a widower, she would not have been his wife. The boys could be either sons or grandsons, their relationship to either adult is unknown. Nathan's place of birth shown as Quebec but if dob (1781) shown was correct, it is open to question. Thanks, Conrad ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! Try it today - there's no risk! Dear list, Does anyone have access to Ray Woods' book entitled, "Melbourne Maple Grove Cemetery, 1834-1989, Congregational United Church?" According to Donald Whyte's "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants To Canada Before Confederation," John Stewart from Peebles, Scotland was buried at Maple Grove on Feb. 7, 1866 (according to the correspondence of Marjory Goodfellow, Sherbrooke, Quebec, filed August 2, 1979). I would love to know if John Stewart, my gggrandfather is listed in the book, and if his son (?) Peter Stewart is listed as well. Thanks for any help - Georgia
