I too have been trying to establish the location of St Marys. On several of my ancestor's vital records who were born between 1820-33 it states - born St Marys C.E. It has been suggested that this St Marys may be what is now known as Marieville, as this fits the pattern of migration from Canada to the US around 1828. But I am not so sure, I believe that the St Marys I am looking for is actually in the Eastern Townships and perhaps more specifically around the Mansonville, Potton, P.Q. areas. I have recently come across a St Marys parish in Franklin Co VT which began around 1850s but this seems to put this St Marys out of the time frame for my ancestors. Would like to hear from anyone else who has an interest or knows of St Marys C.E. Janice Lodge

Hi everyone: I've recently purchased a copy of the "Alphabetical Index to the Land Grants by the Crown In the Province of Quebec" for the letter D. I believe that I've found a reference to an ancestor, but I'm not sure how to interpret the information provided. Here's what it says in each of the columns: Name of grantees: Dalglish, the rep. of James Townships: Gore of Somerset Counties: Mgantic Acres: 100 Date of letters-patent: December 22 1870 Registered - Letter: 14 Page: 217 Page of the printed list: 613 I realize that I can write away for the original Letters Patent, but before I do I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect from it (them?) Does anyone know the current fee and the best way of going about getting this information? Also, I'm curious to know what "Gore of Somerset" means. There is also a township called "Somerset" listed. Thanks in advance, and Happy Canada Day! HAPPY CANADA DAY!
Does anyone know if there is a census available for the years 1820-1860ish? I know this is the wrong region, but sometimes the families go back and forth...alot were baptized/married in your region....Megantic and Beauce region.... also was there a Pointe Lévis census available for the same period? Is there an address available out there that someone might have for the Historical Society of St.Come de Kennebec....I couldn't find it on Marlene Simmons sight. Thanks to all....
I must have missed your first pages. Where does this information come from? I have an Ephriam Wheeler in my line. Looks like he did settle. in Hereford. Can you help with where you received this info. Thanks Sally
Have you tried the State of Vermont records for towns along the border? Look for records for siblings. Up till about 1830/40 I've found marriages in particular have been recorded in Franklin and Richford when both parties came from towns just along the Canadian side of the border. I believe there _may_ have been several protestant preachers working the area without a formal church in Canada. They seem to have recorded B-M-D events back in Richford or Franklin. I've found many of the Stanbridge members of my wife's family that way. > -----Original Message----- > From: T Coleman [mailto:tcoleman@sympatico.ca] > Sent: Thursday, June 29, 2000 6:52 PM > To: QC-ETANGLO-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [QC-ETANGLO] question in general > <snip> > is there any other document that would perhaps list her > siblings/parents > or full christian name..... > > thanks for all suggestions...she was born in 1817 by the way....please > e-mail me! >
I found a Thomas Martin on the Oaths of Missisquoi Bay coming from Caldwell Bay. My Thomas Martin ended up in Durham married to Sarah Cummings about 1825. Could someone tell me where Caldwell Bay is. Also, is there any way of finding out more about this Thomas Martin that is listed in the 1795 list. Thanks

I was wondering if anyone has any information regarding whether Wells Hodge born 1861 Mendon, NY to Nelson Hodge and Mary E. Warner is a descendant of David Hodge and Catherine Sunbury ca. 1800 Eaton Corner. Wells was my gg grandfather and later spent his life in Eaton, but I am not sure whether tjis is a name coincidence or not and would be glad of any help. Thanks, Jennifer Crane Montreal

The name below sounds French and Roman Catholic. Ste Marie in this case would not be Ste-Marie d'Eli which would be opened later as a parish. My suggestion in this case is Ste Marie-de-Monnoir, which by the way th e anme was changed to Marieville. This area has given lots of families to the Townships, including mine. Antoine Benoit got married there in 1815. Searching the Larose name of that time can be very difficult. In 1837, there was a beginning of a French Canadian revolution which was put down by the British Army. Lots of men immigrated west or south to better working conditions and not be questioned by the Army. At that time, those who felt the need changed their name to their "dit" name. The really bad news is that Tanguay provides 54 dit names for Larose. If the ancestor did not change you are lucky, otherwise be prepared for a lot of research. As an aside dit name changes were ruled out by the Canadian Government in 1876, but the practice stayed to the beginning of 1900. Immigrants to the US would adopt the easier sounding name for the English speaking employers. (Hope I did not confuse two different St Mary's questions) Marcel Benoit ---------- > From: molly <molly@sunline.net> > To: QC-ETANGLO-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [QC-ETANGLO] Re: St. Marys for Molly > Date: June 28, 2000 11:47 AM > > Thank you, Joy. Perhaps if you send the corrected name again to the list some person may have the appropriate info for you.. Sorry I couldn't help much but got the ball rolling... Hello all, I'm new to the list though I have "lurked" in the past! I have recently received some updated information regarding my grandmother and 4 great aunts, all of whom were British Home Children sent to Canada from Liverpool, Eng in 1888 and 1889. They were the daughters of Richard and Jane (ROUTLEDGE) CARRUTHERS. One son, John remained in England. It would seem that at least 4 of the girls were "distributed" throught the receiving home in Knowlton, QC. My grandmother (Elizabeth) was sent to Ontario, one sister (Frances) sent to Nova Scotia, another (Isabella) to Pointe au Chene>Lachute, PQ. Two of the sisters remained in the Eastern Townships: Mary Jane (Jenny) CARRUTHERS: b.30 May 1876, Liverpool 1888 living with Mrs F. Warden in Cowansville 1891 living with Mrs E Miltmore (?), Knowlton 1893 living with Mrs Dalton, Evelyn Grange, Richmond 1894 married to William SHELL "on the sly" 1899 apparently returned to England with her husband and 2 children. Living with her mother, Jane Routledge Carruthers PRUDEN. It is noted that William SHELL had relatives outside of London, ENG Margaret CARRUTHERS: b. 24 May 1879 1889 living with Mr John Ferns (?). Hemmingford, adopted 1889 living with Mrs Wm Stirrat (?), Dundee, adopted 1892 living with Miss Stewart, Cowansville, employed 1892 living with Mrs Little (?), Granby, employed 1893 living with Mrs. W E Jones, Richmond, employed 1895 - 96 working in "Refreshment Room" and the Phoenix Hotel, Richmond 1899 now married to a Mr. JUDGE, living in Richmond and has one child. I have yet to search for any Canadian information as I've just rec'd this information from Barnardos. It is my intention to check the 1901 census at least for Margaret. Can anyone suggest the best route for tracking down a marriage cert for these 2? Any other suggestions for me? Do any of these places, ie the Phoenix Hotel in Richmond, or surnames still exist in the Townships? Any help/direction appreciated! Jane Tait Soules ON, CAN
Actually Ste-Marie d'Eli is a small "hameau" in Shefford County, Ely township. Mary in french is a woman's name hence it would be written with an "e" for Sainte. Since this is a popular religious name, there are 10 Ste Maries' in Quebec. In this case I am referring to communities and not parish names, although some parishes may have a church called Ste Marie + something else. If the ancestor was an English and Protestant, Shefford would be a good place to look rather than Beauce or Nicolet area which have other places of the same name. Believe you could find the place on the excellent map on Marlene Simmons' web.
