I have three unidentified late 19th century photographs of my Beattie family from Leeds, Que., that I am trying to identify. The people are unidentified, but the photographers are clearly marked. Can anyone tell me when the following photographers were active in their cities? J.E. Gilchrist, Thetford Mines, Que. G.H. Presby, Sherbrooke, Que. I would be happy to email the photographs to any Beattie family researchers who might be able to help in identifying those pictured who might be our common ancestors. My grandfather was Gilbert John Beattie(born 1870 in Leeds; died 1938 in Thomaston, Maine, USA) and my great-grandfather was James Beattie (born 1829 in Leeds; died 1889 in Leeds). I would be extremely grateful to anyone who could help me give names to the proud, handsome people in my three photographs. Surely they deserve to be identified.

Can anyone tell me if there is a town called Ascot in the Eastern Townships? I just found out that my ggggrandfather may have been born there. Thank you. Kathy
Hi William, Please email the photographs. I know a Beattie from Northern Vermont. No guarantees, but there's a possibility he might know of this family. I'm sure his family originated from Quebec, but have no details at this time as to where, when, etc. Jan jans@top.monad.net William Pease wrote: > > I have three unidentified late 19th century photographs of my Beattie > family from Leeds, Que., that I am trying to identify. My ancestors were Mcmillans and Kerrs. They came to Inverness Quebec in 1829 on the Caledonia from the Isle of Arran. I have just returned from my trip to Arran. It was amazing to be able to go to the place where my ancestors were born, and visit the places where they lived. I went into the Sannox Congregational Chapel, it was wonderful. It is a beautiful island and the people were very friendly. Heather L
I would suggest that you contact the Quebec Family History Society at: http://www.cam.org/~qfhs/ . They have a list of people who for a small fee might be able to do that errand for you. At the very least you might find out the answer to your question regarding the cost of a copy of the will. You could also check out the National Archives of Canada web page and search on "wills" for the information you seek: http://www.archives.ca/exec/naweb.dll?fs&02020202&e&top&0 Good luck! Hello list: Sorry to be putting another query out so soon but found the following in my records: JOSEPH HENRY LAFRANCE b.7 December 1876 Kingsey Falls, Quebec. His father was JEAN BAPTISTE LAFRANCE b. 18 April 1851 Kingsey Falls, Quebec. JEAN BAPTISTE LAFRANCE married MARY BRISSON according to death record of son. JEAN's father was FELIX LAFRANCE. No further information on FELIX. Would like to be able to confirm this information through baptisms or birth records, etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Hello List: Back again, having just returned from a hunting expedition and would like to try again! I found the following death record in New Hampshire: JEAN BAPTISTE LAFRANCE b. 4/18/1851 Kingsey, QUE. (Name may have been JEAN HENRY LAFRANCE) Father's name: FELIX LAFRANCE. The death record of his son lists mother as MARY BRISSON. Grandson (now deceased) reported that JEAN had married three times and MARY died in childbirth in 1880. The grandson also referred to Jean as HENRY so perhaps that would have been his middle name. So it may appear that he came to US after her death, either with children, or children and a new wife. >From records, it appears that JEAN came to NH between 1884 and 1895. There is a discrepancy in the dates. His death record says he was a resident of the US for 44 years when he died in 1928 which would make his coming to NH in 1884. However, if you take his birthdate and add 44 years it comes out to 1895. Any help would be apprecated. Thanks in advance. Molly Shumate molly@sunline.net
Hi Listers, Has anyone ever obtained a copy of their soldier ancestor's original deed to their land. My soldier ancestor was granted 100 acres in Grantham, Drummond, in 1815-16. I have been told that after the 3 year trial period, settlers were given a deed to their land. I have spoken to someone who has seen his ancestor's deed, he said his father sent away somewhere in Quebec to obtain it. He said all he remembers about it is that there was a mention of the land being bought for 1 shilling. He is quite positive these deed exist. I have written to St. Foy but was told I would have to hire a researcher, as it was more than they were willing to undertake. I don't mind hiring someone, but I would really like to know if anyone else out there has seen these deeds first. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Carol
I believe this message is coming every time we get a message from the person with the name Hooey - seems that the computer is recognizing this as Japanese and Microsoft prompts you to download a program. I don't get the message with mail from other people. Shirley
Hi Guys, I thought that I would post a reply I received from my letter that was in the Toronto Star. There are two suggestions for anyone trying to find birth families, either for adoptees or anyone who wishes to find their family members. Two suggestions to help you in your search, please try: 1) www.canadianadopteesregistry.org/index.html There are about 60 reunions per month and there are alot of people registered there. It is a free service. 2) http://nebula.on.ca/canadopt/ This lady insists it is very important to be registered with these two sites. It is also a free service and she leaves some kind of #, so I am not sure if she is a volunteer there or what. I have registered and I know there are some of you who are also searching their immediate family members also, so check out the sites and see if anything interests you. Hope it helps, Karen B.C.
Hello, does any one on the list live in Montreal? Need some one to go to the Court House as my Duncan and Alexander McDougalls wills are there. What would it cost to get a copy off the wills? Would whom ever could check this out for me please get back to me? Thanx. Viola.
Seeking any and all information on the surname PLACE. Members were known to have been in Brome and Stanstead County at various times during the late 1700s and onward, with frequent stints in Franklin and Orleans County, Vermont. I am especially in need of finding the parents of BENJAMIN PLACE, born 10 Sept 1809 in either Potton or Bolton. His mother was POLLY CAMBER who was born in Stratford, VT in 1793, the Camber family moved to Stanstead shortly after 1800. No Camber family researcher seems to know anything about Polly once she left her parents home. If there is a marriage record for Polly Camber in Stanstead I wish someone could PLEASE, get it to me, or any information at all about this person. If someone could find a copy of the birth record of Benjamin Place either in Potton or Bolton I would be most grateful. I need HELP. I have bought all the records on this family that Marlene Simmons has available, all to no avail, but I know something has to be out there, somewhere. Seeking data on all PLACE family in the Eastern Townships. Thanks, Marlene
