Hi Listers, Would anyone know if Chelsea Pensions were transferred to the wife upon the pensioner's death? I have been told they were not transferred, but I have reason to believe they were. I am very confused. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Carol

Dear Listers, My mother, brother, and I, will be visiting the townships to do lookups for a few days in early April. Specifically in Marsboro,Marston, Lac Megantic, and Sherbrooke. We are seeking tips on where to stay and who visit with. We will visit cemeteries in the area, and already have guidelines for that. We also know what churches to visit. If time permits, I am willing to do lookups for others while I am there. The first five people who contact me will be the five I attempt to help. I am fairly new at this, so I make no promises as to results. Your references for hotels or Band B's, eating places, etc will be much appreciated, as well as lookup tips. S. Matheson
Sandy Williams I saw your reference to your Miller Descendency chart. I have a great-great-grandfather, David Miller Peebles, born February 5, 1836 in Henryville, Eastern Townships, Quebec, the son of John Peebles and Mary (?) Miller. My grandmother was not certain of David's mother's name but thought it might be Mary. David Miller Peebles married Emily Diana Sornberger, daughter of David Wellington Sornberger and Emily Diana Gardner, in May 1864. David and Emily are buried in Fitch Bay, Eastern Townships, Quebec. Do you have any connection in your Miller Descendency chart to David Miller Peebles? Dear Listers, Can anyone tell me what newspaper would have served Melbourn County of Richmond, I would like to check for an obituary, this person was living in Melbourn but he was buried at St. George's Church in Drummondville 1911. Sincerely, Carol
Hello Listers, Finally got back to the newspaper archives today.. - & found a few items that hopefully will be of interest. Think there's a Tittimore researcher on the list -- so let's start with the Montreal Gazette P 1 - Aug 2 1854. The children of the undersigned having abandoned his house & home without his consent ...all persons are cautioned against giving them credit or support on his account for he will not be answerable for their engagements. Dec 1 1853 St Armand, Qc. signed : P Tittimore +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Quebec Gazette : Thurs Aug 3 1854 (from Sherbrooke) ...... body of a man was found drowned in the St Francis River about 4 miles below Sherbrooke (Qc) on Thurs last. The body is supposed to be that of Railroad Engineer named Spout who was dismissed for intemperance about a week since. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Montreal Witness: Sept 6 1854 Christieville : On 27th ult. Miss Jane Brown , 3rd daughter of the late J ames Brown Esq - (died) - aged 51 yrs. The article goes on to discuss the merits of Miss Brown in teaching children religious instruction & ends with these words : " our community have sustained a great loss in her death" Hinchinbrooke: Tues, 22 Aug last - Mrs Janet McFarlan (died) aged 95 yrs. Relict of the late Robert Gibson of Ph of Luss ? Dumbartonshire , Scotland. Endeared since her emigration to this country to a large circle of acquaintances & friends, by her stern virtues & qualities of one of the standard families of Scotia. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ St Johns News & Frontier Advocate Fri June 6 1849 p 4 (advert) Dr Burroughs - Dentist - has removed his office to the corner of McGill & St Paul Sts - Montreal. Artificial teeth inserted on gold plate or on Pivot, equal to natural ones, both for use & for ornament. False palates inserted upon the most scientic principle . dated Montreal Jan 1848. +++++++++++++++++++++++++ St Johns News & Frontier Advocate Sept 6 1861 p 2 (taken -- it says -- from the Sherbrooke Gazette of Sat last) This was long..so I'll paraphrase it. Seems there was a yoke of oxen taken from the pasture of Mr Abiel Abbott of Hatley on the night previous to a cattle market in Sherbrooke -- & were driven there - arriving about 7 am. Yarded by a man calling himself James Pier (though the article seriously questions this was his real name). A Mr Dinning or Dimming Esq of Quebec City was at the sale - saw these fine oxen - & paid $60. for them. Mr Pier was never heard from again. Meanwhile Mr Abbott's brother was at the sale & saw the oxen & wondered why his bro. was selling them - but didn't question it. When all the facts were known Mr Dinning/Dimming graciously returned the oxen to their rightful owner. ++++++ Also P 2 : under "International Justice" there's an item about a cricket match between Philipsburg (Qc) & St Albans (Vt) - in which the St Johns paper pointed out the interesting fact that the St Albans "Messenger" had much to say about this upcoming match. Then it says " It was favourable to the Canadian players & singular to say the event is passed over in solemn silence by them" (St Albans paper) ! On the same page there is a list of all the players on both teams..& informs us that the Philipsburg team hosted a dinner for the American one.. & they had a spirited time. +++++++++++++++++++++++ St Johns News & Frontier Advocate : Sept 18 1861 page 3 (marriage) Mon. Sep 9 @ the residence of the Bride's Father - by Rev M Townsend-- Theodore Wiliams of Norwalk Ohio - to - Mary J , dau/o E S Goodnow Esq of Henryville, CE Oct 11 - P 2 Court News On Monday Henry Martin of Stanbridge was placed on t rial for arson & acquitted - afterwhich he was immediately discharged. ++++++++++++++++++++ There was also some mention about the Collins trial in Montreal (of Clarenceville) but I just could not make out the name of the murdered person..& Mr Collins was not given a first name. Hope you enjoy these snippets. Pennie
---- "I not only have a Mr. ? Bockus who married into our Miller line, but we have some Corey's that also married into the Miller line. Wouldn't this be funny if this Ada E. Corey was related to my great great grandmother Catherine Corey?" Sandy Williams Reply: Where I live in Stanbridge East, the surnames Bockus,Corey and Miller are quite common, and have indeed intermarried. (see #3 below for link between Corey and Miller) There are many branches of the COREY family, all linked to WILLIAM CORY who came from Devonshire England to Rhode Island in the 1600s. (1)LINDOL COREY (1807-1885), one of 12 children of Henry and Ruth (Bates) Corey bought land in Stanbridge in 1859; he married SUSAN DYMOND and had children MERVIN*, VIRGIL, BEN, ALMA and SARA MERVIN* COREY married ELLA J. EARLE and had children ETHEL, LILLIAN, WILLIS, JESSIE, FRANK* and IRENE. FRANK* COREY married EDNA MACLEOD and had children DOUGLAS, HUGH and JEANE (2)NILES COREY and MELISSA SCHOOLCRAFT had only son MERVIN G. COREY who married ALICE LAMPMAN and had children HERTHA, ERIC (married Muriel REID), JUNE, GERALD and MERLIN. (3) ISHMAEL ADAM COREY married MINNIE RACHEL CASEY in 1903 and had children: EDITH (m. Gerald HAWKE; children Lois, Lindol), GERALD (m. Evelyn MILLER; children Beverly, Ronald) and DOLORES (m. Edwin LAMPMAN; child Cheryl) (4)JOHN COREY married ELLA BROWN and had son BRIAN COREY (m. Judith MCALEER, daughter of John MCALEER and NORA BOCKUS; children LISA and WILL) (5) DELBERT COREY married LIBBETH MARTINDALE; child GLENNA AURILLA married ARCHIE SAGER and had children ELIZABETH (m. Hello Listers, I must have missed the Bockus query..but if the person will contact Mrs Judy Antle - Archivist at Missisquoi Historical Society in Stanbridge East... she has a genealogy of the Bockus Family for sale. I bought one & it was done by the late Mrs Flora (Primmerman) Rhicard. Think it costs about $10. Also if the Bockus researcher wants to contact me privately, I have quite a few notary records for Bockus' -- wills & things. Mrs Antle can be reached by e-mail..but if there are a lot of people visiting the archives, she doesn't always have time to check her e-mails daily. You'll get excellent service from her though. mhsarchives@globetrotter.net Pennie

Hello I have a question from the 1871 census. The person's religion was listed. Some of the family was listed as Congregational or W. Methodist. That was expected. But some are listed as something that looks like E Eresf or possibly C Presf. Some of the handwriting is very good, but parts of the Dunham list was pretty bad. Also, family records say the family lived in Cowansville and Sweetsburg. Why would this have been in on the Dunham census? Any help would be appreciated. Paula Oneal
