    1. [QC-ETANGLO] Royal West Militia
    2. Georgia Garnsey
    3. In reading over an 1842 deed that I received of my ancestor, John Leith of Inverness, I saw a reference to John Wilton, the seller of the land, as a former Lieutenant in the Royal West Militia. Does anyone have any knowledge of what that refers to? Would it be a unit siding with the British in the Rebellion of 1837? In another deed (1846), John Leith is referred to as "Yeoman and pensioner late of the Farm an nough Regiment of Militia of the one part?" Does this make sense to anyone? What does "Farm an nough" mean? I appeciate any help anyone can offer on this latest puzzle! Georgia

    1. [QC-ETANGLO] Chapman (Nelson) bp. in Sanbornton, NH /other family names
    2. Hello fellow list members, I posted a month or two back with just 2 names John W. Chapman b.1832 and his wife Carrie (I had no last name). The combined information from all the wonderful people on this list who sent me what information they had helped me greatly, Thank You!. My uncle had pretty much given up on tracing the Chapman's in the Eastern townships. Through your help, I have been able to trace John W. Chapman and his wife Carrie *Marston* b. 1840 to Vermont and possibly even NH. Here is an update. I was able to get a marriage record in Vermont and found that JOHN W. CHAPMAN is the son of JOSEPH Chapman and ANNA (Nelson) in Brome County. I had thought that John was a son but had been unable to show it. I now have 2 children listed who are definitely children of Joseph and Anna; John W. and Mahala b.1826(married William McGlue and poss. someone else). I am also pretty sure that Joseph and Anna also had a son named Greeley. The marriage on John W. Chapman also says he was baptized in Sanbornton. There is no Sanbornton in Vermont now but there is a SANBORNTON town in NH. Many Chapman's are in this area so I am hoping and searching. :-) I believe I may be able to then find some of the Chapman's connected to Joseph Chapman in the Eastern Townships if I can find Joseph's connection. Many of the Chapman's living in Sanbornton are originally from Rockingham county. I was also able to find out about ABOUT Carrie Marston's family. Many of her siblings went to Knowlton, Brome County and married. Her father is Orvis and her mother is Caroline LITCH. There is an entire book first published in 1888 devoted to the Marston line. Some names are just a little bit off though. If any one knows any more about this family I would love to know about it. Thank You for all your help. All the best, Joyce

    1. Re: [QC-ETANGLO] Home militia-1940's era???
    2. Sharon
    3. Dear Pennie, My mother claims that my father could not be in the regular army because of his poor vision, severe astigmatism. If he were in the Home Guard, a term I have seen on the Canadian Military website, it may be possible that he was able to fool them over the eye business. In the photos of him in military MP garb, he is not wearing glasses. I got the sense his family was less than proud of the fact he did not go overseas. That particular website,( sorry I don't have the url handy) mentions various militia groups, however they each seem to be connected to a specific province, and there are numerous listings. Thanks you for the information. My brother should have Dad's death certificate, because he handled arranging for his military burial. I will certainly be in Ottawa in April to meet my father's nephew, my first cousin, whom I met doing this online search. I will go to the archives and pull what I can. 3. Dear Listers, Thanks for the many responses and tips about my trip to the townships planned for April. With all the help, I am sure I will have a great trip. Can anyone help me determine what is meant by the term "Home Militia." My Mom seems to think it was some form of national guard during wartime. My father was in it. I have his photo, with an unidentified friend, wearing the obviously military uniform, with MP armbands. I would like to find his military records. I know that he received a military funeral in 1978 in Vancouver, but nothing more. Best regards, Sharon
