    1. [QC-ETANGLO] Re: BENONI
    2. Beth, Noticed that you have a Benoni. I've heard that name was used for a son if his father died shortly after his birth which can be a helpful clue sometimes. Had always wondered about mine as it sounded Italian to me. My Perry's that were born in VT had originally been Pare (with the french accent on E) coming down from Quebec and given English spelling by Census taker I guess. Mine contunued down to Mass. and later generations never knew of the French origin. So I guess our Perry's went in opposite directions. 1. [QC-ETANGLO] Quebec Civil War Vets - Pension info? -KERR
    2. Hi all, I've been hunting for info on an Quebec ancestor from the Lennoxville area named James Kerr that enlisted in the civil war. I don't know his regiment but I found one listing on ancestry.com in the pension records, images online that might be his. It gives application and certificate numbers and I am hoping there is a way to track those? What it says: Kerr, James; Widow Kerr, Catharine M. Under Service it says: D. 5 Marine Inf. Date of filing: 1879 Dec 10 application number 325.182 and certificate number of 233.467 Date: 1886? Widow applied # 351.879, certificate # 265.322; under state from which filed it says CANADA. Any idea where I would go to pull those application and certificate numbers? 2. Randall Brown
    3. Jackie, Thanks so much for posting the website. I am sure that this is the Isabel Morrill that is mentioned in many letters I have from my ggg-aunt, Mary Lee Morrill who lived in Stanstead to her brother who lived in NY. Isabel lived in Mary's home in the 1840's and was helping her with the children. She was most likely a cousin to Mary's husband, Benjamin Thrasher Morrill. It was fun to see what she looked like and also to read the history about her later in life!! Thanks again Susan Brown

    3. http://web.idirect.com/~rburnet/index.html Listers, sorry I don't know why the links ran together like that. I copied them on separate lines. Oh well, I'll try again, with only the main link. The agent's genealogical index is interesting. Just click the province of interest to start, but check every province. Apparently railway workers and agents often travelled around the country working different stations. I started with Quebec, but was interested to see POPEs and MACAULAYs in other provinces. I found no MATHESONs, but I think this site offers some possibilities with a-mail links and page links to some of the people listed. Sharon

    3. My grandfather and uncles, MATHESON FAMILY,from Lac Megantic worked almost exclusively on the railroads in Quebec during the 1920's through 1940's. My uncle Norman,Donald, or Jack, ( I'm not sure which one) was killed in a railway accident. Another uncle lost his leg in the same or possibly a different accident. Railway Canada and the Archives both have some interesting info, but I want to find the names of what railroad companies were in the townships during those times, and I wonder how or if employment and accident records are available. My search so far indicates that the railways were a prime employer of Scots, out of the Scotstown area, and that accident and death were frequent occurrences. Any info or suggestions will be appreciated? I wonder if there was an association of some sort, possibly with a newsletter to members. Thanks, Sharon Matheson

    1. Re: [QC-ETANGLO] algebra
    2. Mat Ardron
    3. The 1825 & 1831 censuses can be 'improved' by the following equations [which were developed by Jay Mack Holbrook in his 15 page 1976 demographic study of Ascott's 1825 census results. He has over 20 equations that he used to check the data.] The key fact is that females under 14 [f<14] are counted twice because they are also included in the children under 6 [c<6] and children 6 to 13 [c 6-13] categories. These children categories include both sexes, unidentified. Males under 14: [m<14] = [[c<6] + [c 6-13]] - [f<14] Males under 18: [m<18] = [total in family] - [sum of all male and female age categories] Males 14 to 17: [m 14-17] = [m<18] - [m<14] Females under 18: [f<18] = [sum of the 3 children categories under 17] - [m<18] Females 14 to 17: [f 14 - 17] = [f<18] - [f<14] One basic accuracy check is to compare the family total to the sum of all categories, omitting the [f<14] figure. When loading census data into a spreadsheet with the above equations, I sometimes come up with a negative figure in a calculated category, which indicates a recording error by someone. Have fun, Mat. P.S. I have submitted Jay Holbrook's scanned data sheets to Pam Wood Waugh for inclusion in her site, but she is having a problem formatting the scanned .doc. If anyone wants the 1825 Ascot data, I will send it on request. It is a 23KB Word .doc of 4 pages. Both Jay and I have cleaned up the data somewhat. I spotted some name errors. I have copies of the very poor microfilm images.
