    1. [QC-ETANGLO] EASTERN TOWNSHIPS NEWSPAPERS
    2. L Gosselin
    3. I have seen several requests for info about OLD NEWSPAPERS - If you have not tried this, you should consult the Bibliothèque Nationale of Quebec at http://www2.biblinat.gouv.qc.ca. You can find considerable English help if you click on "English Summary", "collections'' then "Iris database", then "catalog search" (I hope I've remembered the sequence correctly!). You will find the source for many old newspapers, their year of publication, how much material is involved, which newspaper replaced it, which company did the microfilming. Some of the descriptive text is in French but so many of the words are similar or the same as in English that this should pose only a slight difficulty. Experiment with a name of a newspaper you know, and you will soon get used to the symbols and terminology. You can search by town or city, county, region, or language. For example, if you search for Coaticook, one of the choices will be Coaticook Observer; following the relevant information, you will find the term Sujets and the underlined links to "Journaux québécois (anglais) - Quebec(Province)-Coaticook ..." This gives you the clue that you will find other English Quebec newspapers under the heading "Journaux quebecois (anglais)" When the town or newspaper you want appears, try clicking on the symbols and anything that is underlined. It is amazing what shows up...Hope this is helpful. Lorraine G

Sorry, but my first reply got away from me before I could add this when I accidentally clicked Send. For this one you could contact the historical society if you don't get an answer here. They have an archive of the Guardian and other papers: http://www.interlinx.qc.ca/~e-dhealy/ > > Thanks and Merry Christmas to all. and to you and all! :-) Bob

    1. [QC-ETANGLO] Merry Christmas to All
    2. Sandra Devlin
    3. A Genealogist’s Christmas Eve by Sandra Devlin 'Twas the night before Christmas and inside my house Little was stirring, except my computer mouse. Our descendants were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of ancestors danced in their heads. So I at my laptop, near trusty old printer Put the finishing touches to the project of winter, The gift I had promised for under the tree A product of love, the family genealogy. My table with clutter galore was aspread with pedigree charts of the living and dead; old yellowed photos, letters of yore, wills and diaries chronicling days from before. While others bought gifts at Wall-Mart or Sears, I’d spent my time searching birth dates and years. No need for ribbons or fancy gift wrappings, This gift had a way of transcending the trappings. While surveying the charts with one final proof, I must have missed the sound on the roof. For what to my wondering eyes did appear, But the jolly old elf, replete in his gear. Searching my face, old Santa could sense My Christmas spirit was extremely intense. He spied my research on the table spread out, "A genealogist!" he exclaimed, “that removes any doubt.” As I climbed up the stairs feeling quite in the pink, I looked back at Santa and shared a sly wink. For he and I know that the gift of oneself, Beats anything bought from a department store shelf. 2. Mary Vivian
    3. Hi, all, The name "Benoni" is probably from Genesis 35:18 in the Old Testament of the bible. Rachel, the mother, named the child "Benoni" which means "the son of my sorrow" in Hebrew, because she knew she was dying when she gave birth. I believe that this is the origin of that name. 1. FORGUE SURNAME
    2. Carol Young
    3. Hello, Holly: I wonder if you could tell me whether your Forgue line shows any link to the following: Francis Christmas - b. in "Canada" about 1796, son of Peter Christmas and Mary Forgues/Forbes Christmas. He emigrated to Vermont about 1841. Francis was married to Fidelia or Phyllina Collum (or Coulombe) who was also born in Canada about 1801, the d/o Anthony and Charlotte Collum. Both are buried in St. Mary's R.C. Cemetery, Richmond, Vermont. I have not been able to discover where in Canada (presumeably Quebec) these ancestors of mine came from. I had assumed also that they had changed their surname to Christmas from Noel, but none of the Noel families I've checked have them. I thought possibly the Forgue line might have a clue for me. Thanks for checking and Happy Holidays. Bernard Young in VT

    2. H. Forgue
    3. Benoni caught my eye also because of my husband's gr. grndfthr., "Belonie" Forgues (from Quebec) I've seen his name also listed as Benoni, Benony, Bermoni and in the US he was called Benjamin after a time. I always wondered why no one could get it right but I guess they didn't put as much emphasis on the proper spelling of a name as we do now. That's an interesting comment about why it was used. Holly (Still looking for Bull, Agar and de Montfort in Quebec) << Noticed that you have a Benoni. I've heard that name was used for a son if his father died shortly after his birth which can be a helpful clue sometimes. Had always wondered about mine as it sounded Italian to me.>>
