    2. Dutton Family
    3. Hi all ; A lot of folks under age 30 have never experienced a hurricane- because there have not been very many. People are lulled into a false sense of security, they pay big-bucks for a house on the beach, built on sand of course - and then we get a few years of storms and all that pricey real-estate disappears ! The same in the inland, they build houses out in the cypress trees, because they are so pretty - and forget that cypress only grow in water. There are a lot of folks now who are flooded, because we are having a wet season, but the water is only going back where it was originally meant to be. We cannot fight Mother Nature. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 26, 2004 2:51 AM Subject: Re: OT - Having lived in Florida from 1949 to 1980 I always watch hurricanes > Hi Jacqueline and List, > > As a born-and-bred, and always have been "New Englander," I can tell you > that we have had very few major hurricanes in New England in recent memory. > They seem to come through the Carribbean and hit FL and GA, or go into the > Gulf of Mexico, instead of heading up the East Coast. 3. Hi Jacki ; Your question is a good one, and there are lots of theories out there - some say the ocean is warmer and that fuels the hurricanes -- but I grew up in Fla, ( miami ) from 1935 to 1950 and we had lots of hurricanes every summer, at least 4-6 every year, some worse trhan others. and we had no real warning then. and the ocean was cooler then, I think. It goes in cycles, and we are on the down-side now. I don't think I would like the earthquake thing because you have no warning and don't know where it will strike. at least, now, there is plenty of warning for the storms here so you can prepare. take care, Sally ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, September 25, 2004 2:39 PM Subject: OT - Having lived in Florida from 1949 to 1980 I always watch hurricanes > Once a Floridian, always a .................... well, maybe not. While I do not show an obvious intersection with the Groat's that you list, I do believe there may a connection between some of your data and my own. I have a pair of GROAT's that married two STONE daughters. Ebenezer GROAT m. Rhoda STONE and John GROAT m. Anna Maria STONE. Ebenezer was born abt. 5-Apr-1800 (grave marker age). Ebenezer and John were in Stanbridge QC when they met the STONEs. They subsequently moved to Whitby ON and then on to St. Charles MN. The researcher that provided me with the GROAT data was Audrey GROWT - hopefully she is reading this list. Anyway I do have some limited land record documentation on the two GROATs that I mention. I would welcome any original citation information that could put these individuals in context, although they are a 'fringe' family as far as my own research goes.

    1. SMITH Families in Eaton / Compton Co. around 1900
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I'd like to repost my interest in knowing how long the SMITH families living in or near Eaton, Compton County, remained living there into the 1900's. I am specifically interested in the William and Jane SMITH who were living there in the 1901 Census. They were living there with their teen-age daughter, Gertrude SMITH. Their son, Henry SMITH, 22, had evidently already moved out of the home. (I have already found several Henry SMITH's in the 1901 Census, including one the same age in Hamilton, Ontario.) I would like to find out if the possibility exists that William SMITH's wife was the sister of my great-grandfather, William Robert KERR. His sister's name was Hannah "Jane" KERR, and it is believed that William SMITH's wife was a Jane KERR. The problem is that most researchers believe that Mrs. SMITH was actually the daughter of Robert and Margaret (HENDERSON) KERR. If she was my great-grandfather's sister, she would have been the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (HENDERSON) KERR. They had been in Argenteuil County, Quebec Province, since their births in 1827. But, they were in Newport, Compton County, in the 1881 Census. William KERR migrated to Boston in the 1870's, and I believe his other sister, Mary Ann KERR, came down with him. The parents and the two youngest sons migrated to Boston in the 1890's. The daughter, Hannah "Jane" KERR, is the one I can't locate information on. (The two youngest sons migrated to Washington State sometime around 1900.) Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) FYI: Mary Ann KERR married in Boston, possibly in the 1880's, but I cannot find any information on her husband, William McGINNIS (any spelling). I believe they lived in the Boston area for a long time, and they had 2 or 3 children. I have no idea whether they met in Boston, or whether William McINNIS (sp?) also came down from Canada.

    3. I have just subscribed to this mailing list. I have looked through past postings and have noticed that some people are looking for Groats, Huntingtons, Marsh's and Demarays. I have some information on these families, so I will begin with what I have on the earlier generations.... The Huntington and Marsh families came from England to the USA, going into Vermont. They were United Empire Loyalists and fled to Canada, eventually settling in the Sutton area of Quebec, receiving grants of land by the British government. Elizabeth Huntington married William Marsh, a Baptist Evangelist and Pastor. Somewhere along the line, Lydia Huntington, sister of Elizabeth, married William Groat. (I don't know if William Groat was a Loyalist, and I don't know where he was born.) Many of this family moved to the Whitby area of Ontario. *Note: This is family history recorded in 1973 by Murray Groat. It hasn't been verified. The following are some names and dates in my database: William Groat (1776-1813?) m. Lydia Huntington, born in Sutton, Quebec, and died 1819 in Whitby Township, Ontario, Canada. The children of William and Lydia are: 1. 1. Desparately seeking two obits HOPKINSON - Sherbrooke Record -1900s
    2. Now that I have some death/burial information on HOPKINSON families I have been researching in Sherbrooke (and Coaticook where mine later removed to) I wish to obtain obituary for the following (who I believe to be the brother of my 2 great grandfather). Hoping to learn place of birth in England and possible mention that he had a brother living in area. HENRY JONATHAN HOPKINSON b. December 22, 1830 England ELMWOOD CEMETERY record sent 9-25-04 Burial No. 1340. (hand written note) H. HOPKINSON Birth Place: England Residence: Sherbrooke Religion: Presbyterian Burial: April 27, 1920 Age: 89 years Cause of death: General dip (?) ============== AND, would like to try burial date for 2 great grandmother CLARINA HOWARD SMITH (MRS. WILLIAM CUELL HOPKINSON) Note: this burial record is puzzling as WM was in 1901 Canada Census in Coaticook - listed as widower. CLARINA HOWARD SMITH HOPKINSON b. about 1829 Canada ELMWOOD CEMETERY record sent 9-25-04 Burial No. 593. (hand written note) CLARINA H. HOPKINSON (Maiden name CLARINA HOWARD SMITH) Born: Canada Residence: Sherbrooke Religion: Presbyterian Burial: Dec. 12, 1907 Age: 78 yrs. Cause of Death: old age. ============= I am hoping her obituary will say who her parents were and where she was born. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP HERE. BISHOPS has no one to do research since DANIEL BROMBY left and I am so eager now that I have this information so hoping someone in area might find obituaries for me. I have more to request from this new data but these two are the most urgent to my research.
