Might anyone be going "hunting" in Marlington Cemetery sometime? We were supposed to make the trip up to that area back in September but the storms here in Florida cancelled it. I am looking for either transcriptions (hopefully there are stones) or photos of some of my Scott clan. Gilbert Scott and wife Judith Tryon and family are likely buried in lots 1-2-3-4-5 in Range VI that were purchased in 1909. A son, Asa and wife Cora may be buried in lots 1-2 in Range IV purchased 1917. Also looking for photos of Daniel Tryon and wife Amy Almeda Wait. I have the transcriptions, but am not sure what lots they are buried in. Also Briggs Wait with transcription, Oct 7, 1876, aged 98 yrs, and his 2nd wife Jane Longeway, died Aug 19, 1859 ae 72 yrs. Tall order, I know, especially with cold weather. If anyone can take it on, please contact me off list and let me know what you might charge. Hello List, Thought I would post again my info hoping anyone can help. I have copies of Original Baptism and Burial record of Mary Danford Partlow June 3, Baptism--Mary Partlow On this third day of June 3, 1843 I baptized Mary, Daughter of Samuel Danford, formerly of Noyan and Mary his wife. Mary (dau) now the wife of John Partlow of Noyan, farmer, Mary born on the fourth day of June 1789, John Partlow her husband and Mary Mc Alister being witnesses signed, John Partlow and Mary McAlister M. Townsend, Rector 1843 July 23, Burial of Mary Partlow On this twenty third day of July 1843 the body of Mary Danford wife of John Partlow of Noyan, farmer, who deceased on the twenty first instant was interred in the presence of John Partlow her husband and George F. Salls, by me M Townsend, Rector, George F. Salls was Mary's brother in law, he was married to Elisabeth Danford John and Mary Danford Partlow's children were: William born 1807 / 1809 Lower Quebec Stephen born 1814 John born 1816 / 1817 Mary Ira Samuel Henry What I need help with is finding John Partlow's parents so I would need a date of death and place of death for him. He stayed in the Eastern Townships and was dead by 1853. The SALLS and BULLOCKS being related to Mary by marriage petitioned the Court at St. Francis for the Partlow Land in Hereford. I don't know if John lived there at one point. Only indication I have of course is that he was in Noyan. Where was Mary buried. I don't know what cemetary she is in. I have copies of Pam Wood Waughs church records but my Partlows are not in those books and marlene Simmons does not have anything on them either. One day soon I hope to join the Missiquoi Historical Soc. but I can't afford that right now. I can't find any info for Mary, Henry, Samuel, Ira the other four children of Mary & John. William, Stephen and John Jr. left Canada around 1840 to New York then to Michigan and Wisconsin and I have that info. census, etc. I am basically concentrating on the death of John Partlow, need burial record for him and hoping it will show his parents. ROGER LOVEWELL SMITH was the son of STEWART CURTIS SMITH and MARY "MOLLY" WELLMAN LOVELL. From website: http://www.tomifobia.com/mahoney/captain_rogersmith.shtml Posted 12.01.03 Fool's Hollow, Quebec JOHN MAHONEY Pioneer aviator inducted posthumously into Quebec Air and Space Museum Hall of Fame Roger Smith was born to fly. His life-long love affair with airplanes began in 1928 when he was 15 and ended only last August when he died at age 90 -- just three months before he was inducted into the Quebec Air and Space Museum Hall of Fame. Sadly, he died of pneumonia on August 3 before learning officially that he, along with eleven other flying pioneers, would be inducted into the Hall of Fame on November 26. Roger Lovewell Smith was born a fifth-generation Canadian in Coaticook, Quebec, in 1912 and he and aviation grew up together. His career began as a teenaged mechanic for Continental Aero Corporation at St. Hubert Airport, outside of Montreal. He soloed in an open-cockpit bi-plane when he was just sixteen. After that, he did it all: Barnstorming at county fairs, bush pilot in northern Canada, operating his own flying company, commercial airlines captain. In WWII he flew the hazardous trans-Atlantic route for the Canadian Government's non-commercial air service. Barnstorming days Here are some of the other highlights in the distinguished flying career of this Canadian aviation pioneer: Buys first aircraft -- a Travel Air E-4000 bi-plane -- at age 18 on May 10, 1931. Barnstorming days At age 19, on July 18, 1932, he becomes the youngest licensed commercial pilot in Canada. Establishes the 'Roger L. Smith Air Service.' Motto: 'Passenger flights anywhere.' Parachute jumpers, anglers, country fair flights at $2 per head. He does it all, mostly in Quebec and Ontario. 1934: Awarded his Air Engineer's Certificate. He and brother Wellman begin rebuild of four-passenger Curtiss Robin mono-plane. 1935: Pioneering bush-piloting in northern Quebec. 1936: Buys Waco Cabin bi-plane. Flys the bush through 1938. 1939: Recruited by Trans-Canada Airlines (TCA) from his piloting job with Montreal's Dominion Skyways. 1940: First Officer, then Captain for TCA. Begins training RCAF and USAAF pilots as part of war effort. 1941: Pilot-in-command of Lockheed Electra 14 on the historic flight between Moncton and Halifax that linked Canada from the Pacific to the Atlantic, thus establishing a truly national trans-continental air service. War Years: Flies the Canada-UK route for the non-commercial Canadian Government Trans-Atlantic Air Service. 1947: Flies North Stars, Super Constellations, and DC-8s for TCA on regular commercial domestic and international flights. 1961: Sets world trans-Atlantlic speed record between Winnipeg and Prestwick, Scotland in a DC-8 jet. Six hours, 54 minutes -- he shaved an hour off the existing record. 1971: Retires from Air Canada after 33 years of service which saw more than 1000 Atlantic crossings and 24,000 hours in the air -- mostly as a pilot-in-command. But Captain Roger Smith was not one to let it stop there. After retiring with Catherine, his wife of 57 years, he owned and restored several aircraft: A Cesna 140, a Piper Cub, and a SeeBee Amphibious. In 1999, at age 87, he piloted a Stearman PT17 in the company of one of his three sons. Roger Smith first saw a photograph of an airplane in 1925, when he was 13. The story was about Charles Lindbergh. And he fell in love with the idea of flying. At the end of his life he had put in more than seven decades in the pilot's seat and accrued more than 27,000 flight hours in aircraft ranging from open cockpit bi-planes, bush planes in the frozen North, to huge ocean and continent-hopping commercial jets. His was a love affair that didn't end with his death -- it lives on in the history of Canadian aviation. =============== Website: http://aerovision.org/aerovision.org%5Fnon%5Fssl/pantheon/inductees.htm The Québec Air and Space Hall of Fame Roger L. Smith (1912-2003) Native of Coaticook in the Eastern Townships, Roger Smith was only 15 years old when he began as an apprentice mechanic at Saint-Hubert for Continental Aero Corporation, under Hervé St-Martin. It was in 1928, the same year of the inauguration of the airport. In exchange for his work, Smith was able to learn to fly, getting some experience next to more experienced airmen such St-Martin, Roméo Vachon, Lee Mackay, Stuart Graham, Hervé Simoneau and Walter Leavens. At the age of 19, Roger Smith became presumably the youngest Canadian airman to obtain a commercial pilot license, already operating his own air service: Roger L. Smith Air Service. At the helm of a small Travel Air 4000 biplane, the young man criss-crossed the country selling coupons which offered aircraft flights for $2. Parachute jumps during air meets and the transport of fishermen to the North also counted among the first activities of the young airman. Having piloted in the 30’s for McKay Exploration Co, St-Martin Air Transport in Saint-Félicien and Dominion Skyways in Rouyn, Smith was hired in 1939 by TCA (Trans-Canada Air Lines, now Air Canada), becoming captain after only 9 months. On April 16th, 1941, he piloted the final segment (Moncton-Halifax) during the inauguration in a Lockheed 14 Electra of the Trans-Canada service of TCA connecting the Pacific to the Atlantic. During the war, Smith was also affected to the transatlantic transport service, piloting along with George Lothian, four-engined Lancastrian aircraft (Lancaster bombers modified for the transport of passengers towards Europe). Inaugurating several new lines during his long career, Roger Smith piloted more than 50 types of aircraft, from the canvas biplane to the DC8 jet, by way of the Super Constellation. He retired from Air Canada in 1971, adding up credibly more than 1,000 crossings of the Atlantic Ocean. He continued to pilot up to an advanced age, reaching the tremendous total of 27 000 hours of flight, which is the equivalent of more than 3 years in the air ! Inducted November 26, 2003. ======================

HISTORY OF STANSTEAD COUNTY by B. F. HUBBARD (Province of Quebec, Canada) with sketches of more than five hundred families. Pages 236 & 237. FAMILY OF WILLIAM BULLOCK, ESQ. WILLIAM BULLOCK, ESQ., was born in Guilford, Vt., in 1770 - m. ARTEMISIA WELLMAN. They settled on Nos. 27 and 28, 2nd Range of Stanstead, near Georgeville, in 1801. Being among the very earliest settlers, they experienced the fortunes that attended the labors of our fathers in making for themselves homes in the wilderness. He early took an active part in the management of public affairs, having received a magistrate's commission and the offices of trust from the Provincial Government. With hardly an exception in the family have all been active useful members of the community. He d. in 1828. His wife d. in 1836. Their children were: WILLIAM, MIRIAM, BIEL, THADDEUS, CHAUNCEY, RECTINA, SAMUEL, JESSE, ARTEMISIA, INCREASE, NOBLE and HARRIET. These all married and had families and their descendants are widely scattered over Canada and the United States. The progenitors of WILLIAM BULLOCK, the subject of this notice, can be distinctly traced back to the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066, and some 300 years before the time of the introduction of surnames into England. We find the name and coat of arms of the family in English Heraldry. The insignia upon the shield are three bulls' heads, and above the shield, a crest of five battle axes with the motto, "nil conscire sibi." In 1635, three brothers, HENRY, EDWARD and RICHARD BULLOCK, emigrated from England and settled in Salem, Mass. RICHARD BULLOCK removed to Rehoboth, Mass., in 1647, and from him, WILLIAM BULLOCK was a descendant.

It is Hinchinbrook or Hinchinbrooke [now the accepted spelling] Township in Huntingdon County, Quebec. The Gore Concession in Hinchinbrooke was so named because of its triangular shape, due to the concessions surveyed back from the river being at an angle to those surveyed from the American border, and Gore being where they met. I believe the Gore concessions in Argenteuil and in the Eastern Townships probably have a similar origin. Bill Brady Ottawa, ON
Hello, Last week I was reminded of a page from Eileen's web site on the "former Township of Gore" which describes the petition of settlers in the 1820's, upon their arriving in Canada. This petition says that they were supposed to get land in Huntingdon County and settle there, but it was all "lotted out." "To His Excellency George Earl of Dalhousie, K.G.C., captain General and Governor in chief of the provinces of Lower Canada, Upper Canada, &c, &c The petition of the undersigned citizens of Ireland Most humbly sheweth That your Excellency's petitioners emigrated from Ireland, for the purpose of settling themselves and families, in some part of His Majesty's American colonies, and on their landing at Quebec and making the requisite enquiries, were decided to proceed to the Township of Godmanchester, Hinchinbrooke or Hemingsford. On their making application to the agent for these townships, they were informed the land was all allotted. Petetioners then proceeded to the Township of Wentworth, which they were informed was then lotting out; but there they were again disappointed, in consequence of the land not being surveyed. Thus, my lord, having wandered about until their resources were exhausted, and their families overtaken by the winter, they had no prospect remaining, but that of immediately erecting shanties to protect them from the inclemency of the weather, and perishing, which they did on a gore of Government land, east of the township of Wentworth, and in the rear of the Seigneury of Argenteuil. Your Excellency's petitioners, can each produce unexceptionable testimonies of loyalty and good character, from clergymen of the church of England, and captains of yeomanry under whom they served. They therefore most humbly implore that your Excellency will be graciously pleased to suffer them to remain unmolested on the said land, till at some future period, it may be surveyed and lotted out." http://www3.telus.net/public/mcelroye/webpages/gore.html/intro.html ..It took me a few minutes, but I finally found web sites which discussed the counties in Quebec Province, and saw that Huntingdon County is down in the southwestern corner, on the NY border, and having Ontario Province across the river. While searching, I also found a web site offering the 1842 Census for Huntingdon County, and found several HENDERSON families mentioned. One of them was a Samuel HENDERSON, and I'm curious whether that is where Samuel HENDERSON from Argentueil County in the 1830's .. moved to. (Did not see any KERR's mentioned.) www.rootsweb.com/~qchuntin/hin42.htm .. I'm also curious whether any of the relatives of the families who settled got Land Grants in Argenteuil County in the 1820's .. were lucky enough to get the Land in Huntington County. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. When I did a search for "Hitchinbrook, Quebec," 98% of the web sites I found were about .. Hitchinbrook / Hinchinbrook Island in Australia ! P.S.2 I will be moving to a new home next week and am in the packing process. So, I might not have time to respond to e-mails until December.
