    1. Re: 'Smith' family (& Naturalization papers for Canadian emigrant Nat. in 1880?)
    2. In a message dated 11/26/2004 12:49:59 PM Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I believe this could be Phine or however his name is spelt. I forgot to write down the rest of the info (Source) so will have to go back & see if I can find it again later. I found it in the 1901 Census Image on-line. I remember my father mentioning the names of the girls (Bertha & Goldie) 1901 Census - Coaticook, Stanstead Co., Quebec [Note - all with the surname 'Smith'] [Source: Page 6] Paulinus - head; b. 20 Sept., 1852, Quebec; (age 48); English Origin Emma L. - wife; b. 20 Aug., 1856, Quebec; (age 44); English Origin Bertha - dau.; b. 8 Dec., 1882, Quebec; (age 18) Goldie - dau.; b. 10 Aug., 1891, Quebec (age 9) Dear DARLENE, I find it worrisome that PAULINUS/PLYNE? SMITH was born in Quebec. BRYANT was b. 1843 USA and according to 1901 census record emigrated to Canada in 1853 and was naturalized in 1880. I know census records can be incorrect of course. I find errors all the time. PAULINUS's birth in 1852 in Quebec is problematic. If BRYANT's census information is correct, he came to the townships at age ten presumably with parents. (Unless he was quite a precocious child) See more complete census on BRYANT SMITH below. If you find more on your SMITH family - please let me know. Do you know if Canadian Naturalization papers would exist on BRYANT? I will also ask this question of our list via copying this e-mail to it. 1. SHS newsletter RESTORATION PIONEERS' MONUMENT Dufferin Heights-Stanstead
    2. Thought this item from current SHS Newsletter might be of interest to list. Page 4. Winter 2004-2005 Stanstead Historical Society Newsletter THE RESTORATION OF PIONEERS' MONUMENT There are plans afoot to restore the Pioneers' Monument at Dufferin Heights. This historic site has fallen into a state of serious disrepair since its last face lift many years ago. Stimulated by the research surrounding its 75th anniversary celebrations and encouraged by a group of local residents interested in the monument, the Society contacted the owner of the property, MRS. ISABEL BERRY, and her son JOHN BERRY about the monument's condition and received an encouraging reply to the effect that the family is committed to ensuring that the site is returned to good condition. Initial discussions suggest that the family, the SHS and the group of local residents coordinated by MIKE HACKETT, are ready to contribute financially to its restoration. In the case of the SHS share, a bank account has been opened which already contains funds contributed for this purpose by former MLA ROBERT BENOIT and by BOB ALGER, who put together a donation from a group of friends. Board member ED HYATT has acted as an effective liason between the Board and the resident's group. Arrangements have been made for a visit to the site this month by representatives of the groups mentioned above. HARRY ISBRUCKER and TOBY ROCHESTER of the SHS and representatives of the residents' group will be accompanied by the designer and former Board member GUY CLOUTIER as well as by ROBERT CHAUVETTE, expert stone mason. CLOUTIER and CHAUVETTE have kindly agreed to contribute their advice on restoration and costs. The monument was put up in 1927 on the initiative of some local residents led by COLONEL BENJAMIN MORRILL, T. LEE QUIMBY, A. E. CURTIS and HOMER G. CURTIS. COLONEL MORRILL was the then owner of the property and father of the current owner, as well as the first president of the SHS. The bronze plaque set into the fieldstone base carries the names of 105 pioneers who, accompanied in most cases by their families, settled in Stanstead Township between 1792 and 1820. ORSON WHEELER later (1940's) designed the plaque which directs the attention of visitors to various local topographical features. Access to the site, is assured by the BERRY family as well as the cooperation of the Dufferin Heights Golf club. =================== For more information contact the Stanstead Historical Society. 1. Widdup in Sherbrooke
    2. I am trying to find out what happened to my great grandfather John Roberts Widdup. He was born in England in 1870 and emigrated in 1898. His last known whereabouts are in the 1901 census in Sherbrooke. He was kiving in Melbourne Strret as a book keeper. He was married to Emily France and had two children, Harry born in 1899 and Percy born in 1900. Percy died in 1868 in Vancouver. Does anybody recognise the name Widdup in their family tree. i have tried to foolow this through Harry and Percy but perhaps there were more children who were daughters. I Has anyone any idea how I can widen my research. I am running out of ideas and hope. I have been looking for John for 4 years now! 1. U.S. Surgeon General's Family History Initiative
    2. Jan J.
    3. The following appears at _http://www.hhs.gov/familyhistory/_ (http://www.hhs.gov/familyhistory/) : U.S. Surgeon General's Family History Initiative Health care professionals have known for a long time that common diseases - heart disease, cancer, and diabetes - and even rare diseases - like hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, and sickle cell anemia - can run in families. If one generation of a family has high blood pressure, it is not unusual for the next generation to have similarly high blood pressure. Tracing the illnesses suffered by your parents, grandparents, and other blood relatives can help your doctor predict the disorders to which you may be at risk and take action to keep you and your family healthy. To help focus attention on the importance of family health history, U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., in cooperation with other agencies within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched a national public health campaign, called the U.S. Surgeon General's Family History Initiative, to encourage all American families to learn more about their family health history. In addition to the Office of the Surgeon General, other HHS agencies involved in this project include the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). National Family History Day Surgeon General Carmona has declared Thanksgiving 2004 to be the first annual National Family History Day. Thanksgiving is the traditional start of the holiday season for most Americans. Whenever families gather, the Surgeon General encourages them to talk about, and to write down, the health problems that seem to run in their family. Learning about their family's health history may help ensure a longer future together. My Family Health Portrait Americans know that family history is important to health. A recent survey found that 96 percent of Americans believe that knowing their family history is important. Yet, the same survey found that only one-third of Americans have ever tried to gather and write down their family's health history. Because family health history is such a powerful screening tool, the Surgeon General has created a new computerized tool to help make it fun and easy for anyone to create a sophisticated portrait of their family's health. This new tool, called "My Family Health Portrait" can be downloaded for free and installed on your own computer. The tool will help you organize your family tree and help you identify common diseases that may run in your family. When you are finished, the tool will create and print out a graphical representation of your family's generations and the health disorders that may have moved from one generation to the next. That is a powerful tool for predicting any illnesses for which you should be checked. For information on other activities of the Office of the Surgeon General, please visit _www.surgeongeneral.gov_ (http://www.surgeongeneral.gov) . Posted by Jan Jordan in VT

    3. Jacki, Richard Greenleaf Smith, 30 Sep 1840 to 7 Sep 1930. Julia Evaline Chesley, 15 Jun 1844 - 26 Nov 1890. The two married on 24 May 1870 I don't have anything further on Richard Smith, but can put you in touch with someone who probably does. Julia Chesley is youngest of 10 children of John Brewster Chesley (1802-1867) and Ruth Draper (1806-1894). Her sister Lydia Chesley (1830-1890) is my GG GM. She married Orin Wilson (1828-1879). I think Richard's middle initial "L." in the 1901 census must be an enumerator's recording error or a misreading. 3. Good morning, In regards to paying a research fee for the KERR / HENDERSON family-group at the Sligo Heritage and Genealogy Center, I have just now heard from them: Dear Betty We accept payment in the form of personal cheque, postal order or money order made payable to Sligo Heritage and Genealogy Centre. We can also accept payment by credit card ( VISA or Mastercard ) Please phone us 353 71 91 43728 with details or if you wish to email us with details, the choice is yours. However, we wish to advise you that our email or website is not secure for sending credit card information. Regards John C McTernan Hon.Secretary So, I will send them a U.S. .. P.O. Money Order for the $80.00. However, I will be moving to a new home on Saturday, and most of my papers are now in taped-up boxes. So, sending the "form" and the "check" to County Sligo will need to wait until the first or second week in December. John Metcalf has brought up the question of how people could help pay for the research fee. I think the easiest way is for people who have offered to help pay the research fee to send me - whatever they feel comfortable with - in whatever form of payment they feel comfortable with. Please e-mail me separately, and I will give you my new mailing address, which will be a P.O. Box for the winter. Thank you. For those of us in the USA, please have a peaceful, thankful, pleasant .. Thanksgiving Day !!! Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)
