This website in Vermont has the history of William Grout b. in Quebec. http://www.rootsweb.com/~vermont/BioWilliamGROUT.html
I have considerable information on the Davol family that changed their name to Dee in the late 1700's. They were from Connecticut but Elijah Dee settled in Georgia Vermont about 1790 (he was my great great great grandfather). Many of his descendants came to Missisquoi County. Your Sarah Dee does not appear to be from this family, unless she was a widow and Dee was her married name. ----- Original Message ----- From: Gordon A. Watts To: Canada Census Campaign Sent: Tuesday, December 07, 2004 1:30 PM Subject: Post 1901 Census - further to IC legal action Greetings All. I have received several messages by those receiving the letter from the Information Commissioner's office regarding his legal action on our behalf. Those contacting me wish to know what is involved should they seek to be a party to the Application of the Information Commissioner. I have contacted the General Counsel, Daniel Brunet, and received the following information from him. The form letter that accompanied the letter sent by Mr. Brunet is to satisfy a legal requirement that complainants be notified of the Application for review, and for them to be given the opportunity to participate in the Application should they so choose. The form should be completed and returned ASAP. Anyone wishing to be a party to the Application would be doing so as an 'intervenor' to the action and as such would be required to put forth their own submissions, testimony and arguments, and to provide their own legal counsel. Essentially, all testimony, submissions and arguments would be done in writing, and by affidavit etc. There would however, be a hearing at which final oral arguments etc. would be heard. The hearing would be open to the public and Mr. Brunet stated he would advise us in advance as to when it would take place. The hearing will be held in Ottawa. Those taking part in the Application would do so at their own expense. That would include transportation, accomodation, food and the cost of any legal counsel. In the end run, the cost to anyone wishing to participate as a party to the Application could be considerable. You could not expect reimbursement by the government for any part of expenses incurred. Mr. Brunet indicated that the 'Litigation' folder on the Information Commissioner's website, mentioned in my earlier post, should be online by sometime next week. Information on the progress of the Application by the Information Commissioner will be available there. My thanks to all who have contacted Mr. Brunet themselves and provided information they received from him. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Hi David Thank you for the wealth of information on Boomhowers. I am primarily interested in the descendants of John Alvin Boomhower and Sophroni Allen. I found that their daughter Alma Lillian is listed as Lillian Rollins born March 3 1875 with her husband Charles Rollins born December 29 1869 and their daughter Fossie G. Rollins born October 24 1898 in the on-line Canadian Census of 1901. They were living in Shefford County, Stukely (South) o-1 page 5. Flossie would be my third cousin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon A. Watts" <[email protected]> To: "Canada Census Campaign" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 06, 2004 3:52 PM Subject: Post 1901 Census - Legal action by Information Commissioner Greetings All My thanks to Norma Brown for forwarding to me her letter, dated 3 December 2004, from the Information Commissioner's office advising that his legal action on our behalf is under way. The pertinent sections of that letter state: "I write this letter to inform you that on November 9, 2004 the Information Commissioner of Canada filed an application for review under the Federal Court Rules. This application, filed in the Federal Court as T-1996-04, relates to the refusal by the head of Statistics Canada (the Minister of Industry) to disclose the records you requested unde the Access to Information Act." "On November 29, 2004, the Federal Court directed that this notice of application be amended to include the matter of the refusal to disclose the 1911 census records to 95 other individuals who had complained to the Information Commissioner of Canada between July 7, 2003 and October 5, 2004." It is expected that the other 95 complainants will be receiving similar letters although as I write this I have not yet received my own. The letter also advises that complainants may appear as a party in the case but anyone choosing to do so would be required to pay their own expenses. A form letter was included for complainants to advise whether or not they wished to participate in the Application. Those receiving such letters should complete and return them as soon as possible. The letter also indicates that on the website of the Information Commissioner (www.infocom.gc.ca) there will soon be a folder added entitled "Litigation" which will contain information concerning the various stages of the proceeding, including the Information Commissioner's representations and affidavit and documentary evidence. As I write this I have been unable to find this new folder but I will be checking often for it and will advise when it appears. Happy Hunting Gordon A. John Stewart, from County Donegal, (all that I know) came to the ET after 1829, as he had twins, Alexander and Mary Ann born in Ireland in 1829. I found him in an 1851 Census for Ste. Catherine, Portneuf County, Quebec,Canada living with his wife (C. Muckleman) and his other 8 children. (Son John was born in Ste Catherine about 1832, so they would have arrived between 1829 and 1832. I have never been able to find anything on the wife's surname, so wonder if it isn't some "sound alike" His brother Alexander Stewart came with him, and married in Quebec, Mary Kanehan (Several spellings on this - Counighan, Conneghan etc) They had 4 children in Quebec, and then moved to the US in or about 1850, as they were in the same census as John.(They emigrated to Vermont - I have info on them) John was a farmer and stayed in Canada, possible Ontario. John's children were all born in Quebec, Canada John b 1832 James b 1836 Sarah Jane b 1838 William b 1839 Robert b 1843 Joseph b 1846 Ann b 1848 (2nd Alexander b 1849) (1rst Alexander b 1829 - Ireland) (2nd Robert b 1850) I would certainly appreciate any info on him or his family. He is brother to my GGgrandfather Alexander Stewart who came to Canada with him. I know that John Stewart is a very common name, but hope I will get lucky. Sorry for the lost post. Cathie in FL PS Perhaps someone could tell me if I could obtain birth records for his children from Ste Catherine.

According to HUBBARD the family settled in Stanstead (1798) and sons next settled in BROWN's Hill. There is a LEVI COLE I have discovered that might belong to this family who came to Stanstead but as yet I have found no proof of relationship. Here are surnames listed in this genealogy report: COLE, SHERMAN, DAVIS, HUTCHINSON, DODGE, POMEROY, BROWN, OSGOOD, SMALL, CUMMINGS, SHURTLIFF, HOPKINS, BACHELDER, WOODE, COPP, WELCH, MERRILL, SLEEPER, BATCHELDER, MERCIER, HOWE, HOWARD, HIGHBARGER, NEWCOMER, LOW, CLEMENS, FRAZIER, LAYBOURN, LEE, GAGAN, FRICOU, LORD, JOHNSON, SCHRAM, AKHURST, FOWLER, GRANT, IRWIN, CROMWELL, McELROY, LYMAN, PARKER, GEBHARD, HOPKINSON, SMITH, BLOUNT, RUSSELL, WELCH.

I have a copy of the 1825 census. It's a real eyestrain. There are ten pages. 1831 is more legible. I also have a copy of that. That one runs to about 20 pages. I've sent you a separate email concerning these pages. The only other item that might help is dated Jan 1804. St. Armand used to have two east-west roads. In 1804 they voted on which road to make permanent and to discontinue the other. The resulting document contains a list of all heads of households in the town at that time. I put a copy of that document on the Eastern Townships Archives website at http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Eqceastwn/archives/starmand1804.html.
Roxana __________ was born about 1776 - possibly in Connecticut. She married Hezekiah SEARS possibly in the late 1790s - either in the Bennington County, Vermont area, or at Caldwell Manor in Quebec. Roxana was a widow living at Caldwell Manor in the 1825 census - with several children. I've been researching this family for 20 years, have only been able to definitely connect 4 children for the couple: Lyman (married Fanny NUTT) born about 1799 Hezekiah (married Lavina VANVOLKINGBURG) born 1800 William (married Margaret NUTT) born 1802) Sophrona C. (married John FAIRCHILD 1835 at Alburgh, Vermont) born @1817 1850 census of Jericho, Vermont when she was living with the Fairchilds says she was born Canada. In the 1880 census of Portage Co., Ohio - Sophronia Fairchild gives her mother's place of birth as "Connecticut". Roxana died sometime after 1850 - either in Vermont, or at Caldwell Manor. Just wanted to post this - does anyone out there have a "Roxana" out there - who might fit in with the above? Thanks! Diane Sears Brigode
Still searching for information on these families, though I haven't been actively researching them for the past couple of years: SEARS - Caldwell Manor, Sutton areas - from 1780s. The family came up from Bennington County, Vermont, and were from Massachusetts originally NICHOLS - Caldwell Manor - from late 1790s. They came from Rhode Island - with a likely pathway which led through the Stephentown, NY area. John Nichols was married to Susannah CLARKE. Susannah had a sister Katherine who was married to Reuben COREY who died in Stanbridge in 1824. VANVOLKINGBURG - Caldwell Manor. John (1802), Lavina (1805) and David (1810) Vanvolkingburg were born in Quebec. Lavina married Hezekiah SEARS in the Caldwell Manor area sometime around 1825, and David married Lucy MILLER there around maybe around 1830/31 or so. I have never been able to make a definite connection for Lucy to the MILLER family of the area, nor make any connection for Lavina, John, and David VANVOLKINGBURG to the VANVALKENBURGH family that lived close. COOK - Jasper COOK married Sarah MILLS, and their family had ties to NICHOLS. Joseph NICHOLS from Caldwell Manor married Annah SLOCUM, and one of their daughters married John Phillip COOK. I am very interested in some of the activities Jasper and Joseph may have been involved in, as well as family lineages.. Many other families, but these are the main ones at the moment. Have been enjoying this roll call! Diane Sears Brigode
