    2. STANSTEAD JOURNAL VITAL STATISTICS 1906-1915 Page 75. DEATH - TOMKINS AND MOYLE A double drowning at Lake Massawippi on Apr. 16, 1910! ARTHUR TOMKINS, son of E. D. TOMKINS & HUBERT MOYLE, son of D. MOYLE, both of Coaticook. This is the double drowning I have been looking for in relation to the cottage of my Great Grandparents F. H. SLEEPER & LILLA A. HOPKINSON. This event was many years before their purchase of the cottage 1924. I was told that this event happened in the small bay that belonged to the cottage. The cottage was/is high on a cliff overlooking the bay. If someone called for help it would have taken some time to reach the persons in trouble if heard at all from the front part of cottage. I have the TOMKINS family located (from deed on sale of cottage to great grandmother) and now wonder about the MOYLE family. I may have to wait until the Coaticook portion of 1901 Canada census is transcribed to find HUBERT MOYLE. Nothing on this family in the SJVS or HUBBARD. This sad tale was told over and over again as a warning to SLEEPER grandchildren and great grandchildren about taking care with swimming in that bay. Very deep very fast from beach. JSR

    1. Re: [QC-ETANGLO] Other research ideas
    2. Thanks so much for your information about research ideas. I can't say enough about how this Roostweb email list is so active. As an american stuck in Philly, I'm close enough to smell Montreal, but too far to see Montreal. I've made one trip which was useless as a genealogical trip, but awesome as a "getting to know Stanstead" trip. I actually brought my family to Quebec this summer for a 2 day visit just for the memories. However, until now justifying a return trip with the wife has been hard to accomplish. The recent rush off material and insight into the Quebec genealogy sources will justify my retunr trip. I have a "money" project to document the Scotch-Irish 1718 emigramts to Boston, and the recent DOAK family info is one of those families. SO now I can do family research and "money" research all at the same time!! :) Again- AWESOME Thanks again, Colin Brooks CHILSON/CHILLSON; REED; HITCHCOCK; MOSER all of Hatley and Masawippi; BOYD; MCDUFFEE; DOAK; ANY 1718 S-I FAMILIES FROM NEW HAMPSHIRE

    3. This might be of help, check out the web page link below Heather http://www.doak.ws/compton.htm A record of the earliest beginnings of Compton are yet to be found. It is a small community that is just across the Vermont border about 25 miles north of Newport, Vt. where Interstate 91 enters Canada. It undoubtedly was founded because of the needs of farmers in the area to have a central place to buy and exchange the goods that they were producing. In the early days, there were no good roads, railroads or vehicles capable of transferring goods quickly from one place to another. So the farmers of the area founded a place that was easy to get to and where one could find general stores, mills and trade shops. Other towns were established, but did not develop and now no longer exist. One such place was Hillhurst, Que. the mailing address for one Doak family. The village of Compton was never very large. It generally had less than 500 residents. The entire Township of Compton reached a peak population of 3,013 souls in 1861

    3. I have considerable information on the Davol family that changed their name to Dee in the late 1700's. They were from Connecticut but Elijah Dee settled in Georgia Vermont about 1790 (he was my great great great grandfather). Many of his descendants came to Missisquoi County. I keep running into the Dee family in northern VT and wondering if there was a connection to them. Your Sarah Dee does not appear to be from this family, unless she was a widow and Dee was her married name. The only thing I know is their names - Michael and Sarah (DEE) HARDY from Dunham, Quebec. I'm not even sure if that is right. However, the death certificate I got their names from, Effa Ann HARDY SWEET, my great-great grandmother, was supposedly born in NY and not in Canada as the death certificate says. It's very confusing! Thanks. Kathy

    1. Brothers, Robert, Joseph KERR, married 1890's?
    2. Betty
    3. Good morning, When responding to the query about the town of Newport or New Port in Compton County, I was reminded that I don't think I have asked a particular question about my great-grandfather's brothers. The 1881 Census shows the family of Robert and Elizabeth KERR living in New Port, Compton County. Their sons, Robert, 18, and Joseph, 14, were living with them. We know that the family came down to Massachusetts before 1900 as Robert and Elizabeth KERR both died in Everett, MA, shortly after that. But, I have yet to find out whether they and their youngest sons traveled down in the 1880's or 1890's. One thing which might help narrowing down the search is to find out whether the sons, Robert and Joseph KERR married in Canada before they migrated to Boston with their parents. .. Is there any way to find marriage records in Compton County for the 1880's and 1890's? .. (I have only the first names of their wives, and am curious whether they were sisters. I am also curious whether the wives traveled to Boston with Robert and Joseph and then married down here. Just guesses.) Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) (I have just moved to a new home, and I do not have easy access to my boxes of genealogy papers until January.)

    3. Hi Geoff, My ancestors, Robert and Elizabeth (HENDERSON) KERR, were living in New Port, Compton County, just before they came down to Massachusetts. I have seen at least one reference to the town being spelled, New Port, rather than Newport, so that is perhaps why you are having trouble finding information. FYI .. from LDS web site www.familysearch.org Census Place New Port, Compton, Quebec Family History Library Film 1375835 NA Film Number C-13199 District 54 Sub-district U Division 1 Page Number 16 Household Number 75 The above is on the page for my ancestors in 1881 Census: Robert KERR M Male Irish 55 Quebec Farmer Weslyan Methodist Eliza KERR M Female Irish 55 Quebec Weslyan Methodist Robert KERR Male Irish 18 Quebec Weslyan Methodist Joseph KERR Male Irish 14 Quebec Weslyan Methodist They seemingly migrated down to New England in the late 1880's or early 1890's. By the way, I would like to find out whether their teen-age sons had already married by the time they came down to Everett, MA, USA. I tend to think that they were already married or they had girlfriends / fiance's who traveled down to Massachusetts with them. Shortly after 1900, both Robert and Joseph KERR left Everett, MA, to migrate to Everett, WA ... and they traveled with their wives. (I know the wives' first names, but not their maiden names. I also know that neither couple had children.)
