    1. [QC-ETANGLO] New Addition to the Archives!
    2. Pam Wood Waugh
    3. David Ellis has continued his transcription of Alburg records from Film #27770 and the newest entries contain many marriages from that film. Please do not think that because they are marriages in Alburg, VT that they don't include marriages of those in our area. So many of my own families were married in Alburg and they lived in Missisquoi Co! Marriages for residents of Sabrevois, Henryville, Caldwell's Manor, Stanbridge, Hemmingford, Farnham, Clarenceville, Noyan, St Armand, Odelltown and others are listed here. Search through all listed, not just doing a surname check -- many names are not as you would expect them to be. Always checking neighboring towns, esp. just over the border in VT, for marriages. I have also located marriages in Highgate, Franklin, and elsewhere in VT, but Alburg has always held a lot for those researching in close by ETs, like the Manors, Noyan, Clarenceville. David has put a lot of effort into the transcription and it just might have the record you're looking for. ;-) Many thanks to David for his wonderful contribution! --Pam

    2. David J. Ellis
    3. Yes - Doug probably knows as much about this as anyone. He and I have often shared data. Several of his maps are in Pam's Archives website. I rather suspect there is no clear cut answer to my question, although there may be several partial answers. One problem is that the town boundaries, (and also county boundaries), changed significantly so that a particular physical location may have existed in several different towns at different times. I am involved, to a small extent, in the Old Cemetery in Pike River which has existed in about half a dozen different towns and in two different counties as the boundaries shifted around it. That is a good example of the general problem. > -----Original Message----- > From: qc-etanglo-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:qc-etanglo-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of VRD > Sent: Monday, October 02, 2006 18:42 > To: qc-etanglo@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [QC-ETANGLO] An observation of the towns around > Missisquoi Bay... > > For those who haven't already seen it, there is some > excellent info at: > > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~macfie/clarenceville.htm > > Vern

    3. The only article, which in itself, I still find confusing, that I have seen, is "Caldwell Manor and Christie Manor, by Herb Derick, that was published in "The Loyalists of the Eastern Townships", back in 1984. If you don't have it, the book is available from the Missisquoi Historical Society. It used to run about $25 or so (but have no checked the website). I have no real sense for the years that Foucault, Noyan, Christie's Manor, Caldwell's Manor, Clarenceville, etc., were used. I must agree it is thoroughly a head scratcher. When you think about how so many of us are unsure as to what was where after years of researching in that area, one can only imagine the utter confusion for newbies to that area of research. Not familiar with the area firsthand only adds to my confusion. The only thing I am quite sure of is that present-day Rt 202 separated Christie Manor from Caldwell Manor! ;-) Supposedly, according to Herb, in 1855, the municipal govt system was put in place. "The western municiplaity, called St Thomas de Foucault, was bounded by the Richelieu River on the west and by the American border on the south, by the west line of the 5th concession to the east, in that part of the line which is in Caldwell Manor, then easterly to join the west line of the 4th concession in Christie Manor. A line running east from the northern boundary of the Philias Goyette farm on the RIver Shore formed the norther boundary. The lands north of this line, so far as the old Noyan Seigniory line, forms part of the parish of St Georges de Henryville. Further east, there is also the parish of St Sebastien which was detached from St Georges de Henryville on Feb 17, 1865.... And lastly, the municipality of St Georges de Clarenceville comprises the lands east of St Thomas de Foucault (Noyan) allowing for that part now the village of Clarenceville, north of the American border, west of Missisquoi Bay, and south of the Henryville-St. Sebastien line." This is only a bit of the article, and as you can see, if you do not have a map of the original concessions. There are a lot of references to the Manors and measurements given. One interesting point was that Herb indicates that land measure in Foucault (Caldwell Manor) was done in Acres, the English measure, and the Christie Manor (Noyan), the French measure of arpents was used. All clear as mud, right? Any one else come across maps that can overlaid to see the differences over the years? --Pam "David J. Ellis" <DavidEllis2@verizon.net> wrote: I had previously thought that Foucault and Noyan were 'replacement' names for Christies and Caldwells Manor that came into use as the 'Manors" ceased to be used; and that these were later changed into names like Clarenceville and Henryville with some corresponding boundary adjustments.
