    3. I read your response to jmbush.I think your John Pyron (1762) is a brother to my William Pyron (1757 VA). Do you know who the parents of your John Pyron were? My William Pyron was the Revolutionary soldier who came to NC from VA shortly after his birth. 1. Pyrons as part of Albion's Seed
    2. For a better understanding of the history of Virginia and North Carolina as well as an appreciation of how the British culture affected the total history of this nation, I highly recommend the book,"Albion's Seed" by Dr. David Hackett Fischer. It actually contains 4 volumes in one with the 4 separate settlements in America. The divisions are: 1. the Puritan settlement;2. the establishment of a colony in Virginia ;3. the Friends (Quaker) migration and 4, the Scots-Irish movement to America.( a great section)The work is a scholarly accomplishment. Also, numbers of genealogies of prominent settlers are included. I am a graduate of Baylor University, one of my majors was history, and I can say with confidence that when the reader completes this book, studies it well, he or she will have earned a credit course in history from any college anywhere. In cloth cover it will sell for about $40.00, but my paper back edition is well stitched or glued and is in excellent shape with a price of nearly half the cloth cover. The book was published in 1991 so you might find a sale price someplace. You might try Amazon.com on the internet. It is published by Oxford University Press, 198 Madison Ave. N.Y.,N.Y. MBush

    1. Pyrons on 1790 census
    2. In an older book, "Mecklenburg Signers and Their Neighbors" by ______Ray, I found some references to the Pyron family in North Carolina. If you recall, a census was taken in 1790, the first census in the US. A brief review of dates in which several North Carolina Counties were created which figure in Pyron history will be listed here. ANSON County was created in 1749 and became the parent county for several relevant counties: ROWAN created in 1753; MECKLENBURG in 1762; CABARRUS County cut out of MECKLENBURG County in 1792 (following the 1790 census) and finally, UNION County in the year 1842. The famous Mecklengurg Convention was held in 1775 in District 16 where later the city of Charlotte was built. There were 27 signers, possibly the most famous was Henry Downs. District 14 was the home of the signer, Col Adam Alexander, as well as lesser known individuals, not signers, the Crowells and the Pyrons. Samuel Crowell Sr. and Samuel Crowell Jr appear on the census list although the spelling is incorrect--Crowle. The Pyrons also appear as residents. All of district 14 immediately North or West of Goose Creek, at the time the census was taken and before when the convention was held (1775) was in what is now Union County, N.C. which was cut out of Mecklenburg County. Goose Creek is associated with Pyron holdings. In district 16, the Convention site, although not listed with the group of signers, several Helms families were present. In the 1790 census in district 16 Jacob Helms was listed as well as Tilman Helms. Also in the same district, Michael Secrest and Francis McCall lived, two families associated with Pyrons. In the 14 district, 1790 census, we read the following: Crowle, Samuel 2---2---3 Crowle, Samuel, Jr. 1---1---2 Pyron, William 2---2---5 Pyron, John 1---2---2 Powell, David 1---2---2 Powell, John 3---0---2 When doing any family research it is important to know dates when relevant counties were created. For the William Pyron lineage, go back through the county changes I have listed, either memorize them or write them in a conspicuous place in your research papers. Mary Pyron Bush

    1. Privacy and the Web
    2. Glenn Gohr
    3. Many Thanks to Michelle Ule for forwarding this information to me. This question has come up several times lately and is a warning to all of us genealogists. PRIVACY AND THE WEB by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG <myra_gormley@prodigy.com> Would you post personal information about your family -- like their birth dates and who they married and when -- on the local grocery store's bulletin board? You wouldn't? Then don't post it on your home page on the World Wide Web -- that's the world's bulletin board, says Carole Lane, author of "Naked in Cyberspace: How to Find Personal Information Online" (Pemberton Press, 1997, $29.95). Don't make it easy for thieves to steal your identity by posting your Social Security number, birthdate, address and mother's maiden name on the Web either. Of course, you wouldn't do that. However, if you want a real shocker take a look at the way some genealogists are exposing themselves and their relatives on their home pages. While gathering information for a book lately, I've examined hundreds of home pages of genealogists, and they are a pretty sight -- for cyber thieves, that is. In our eagerness to share our family history material and utilize the power of the Internet we have forgotten that not everyone is honest. Genealogists are not even thinking of the possible consequences when they take a GEDCOM from Cousin Clare (who got part of it from Cousin Billy, who got part of it from Cousin Bonnie, etc.) and post it on their home page. Oh, it's wonderful information for genealogists, right down to everyone's grandchildren's names, their spouses' names, and their birth dates and addresses. The fact that they have invaded the privacy of their relatives has not crossed their minds. Christine Gaunt <cgaunt@umich.edu>, co-compiler of Genealogy Resources on the Internet <http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/gen_int1.html>, shared her concerns and thoughts about this problem with me recently. They include these suggestions: -- You can post some information without posting what is an identifier. Instead of saying that Jane DOE is your mother, say that you are researching the Jane DOE line, and here is the information you have on her, and where you've looked. Don't post your (or living family members') birth dates and birthplaces. -- Don't post Social Security numbers at all. Ditto for other identifying numbers like driver's license numbers. -- Decide for yourself what information you want to give to cousins you have met online. -- Use a program such as GedClean to remove information about living individuals from your database before sending it to someone else, or to a repository. That way, your birth date and birthplace won't get into someone else's database. -- Ask permission before you send GEDCOMs you've received on to someone else. That way, the originators can keep track of who has their data. -- We may want to ask/tell our credit card companies that Mom's maiden name is NOT a good password to use and to ask for a PIN or other password instead. An article entitled "Home-page Snoops," by Margaret Mannix appears on the "U.S. News & World Report" magazine online edition at: <http://www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/980511/11mone.htm> Check out the related links at this site, particularly those regarding identity theft and advice from the Social Security Administration on what to do if someone else uses your number. 1. Thomas Russell Pyron family including obituary of Gertrude Pyron
    2. Mr. James R. Wheat, Jr. of Minneapolis, MN sent me his family records several years ago. His records are carefully made, revealing a great diligence on his part. Thomas Russell Pyron was the son of William Pyron, Jr., son of the Rev. War veteran William Pyron who died in 1850. Thomas Russell was a brother to my Andrew Jackson Pyron and J. C. Pyron who moved to Arkansas. In a letter from a son of J.C.,Alonza Pyron, to my grandfather, Aurelius Milton Pyron, dated about 1926-27 from Hamburg, Arkansas he states: "...have never seen any member of your family or in fact any one of Fathers family except the Carlocks in my life. I corresponded with several of Uncle Thomas boys for a few years when they lived in North Carolina, but later I understand that Uncle Thomas died and all his boys moved to texas. Have you ever met any of them? David, Tinsley and John were the names of three of them. Well, father died in March 1914..." Back to Thomas Russel Pyron's family. He had a son, Tinsley Phoenix Pyron who married Serena Helen Festerman in Texas. Tinsley was born in Mecklenburg County, NC. This couple had a large family, Mr. Wheat lists 14 children. One of the children was Walter Braxton Pyron, later to become General in the Army. He married first, Mamie Greer who died in San Antonio in 1951. General Pyron then married Gertrude Drach. I have the obituary for this remarkable woman, one who apparently was ahead of her time. Quote: Gertrude Drach Pyron, a resident of San Antonio since 1953, died Wednesday, June 1996 after a long illness. She had also resided in Pittsburg, Pa, Washington, DC, New York city, and London England. Mrs. Pyron was one of seven sisters born to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Everette Drach of Denver, Co. A graduate of the University of Colorado, and took graduate work at the University of Denver School of Finance and Commerce and the University of Pittsburg, Pn. She had a distinguished career as a teacher of mathematics and science and later as geologist and petroleum analyst with Gulf Oil Company of New Jersey, Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Case, Pomeroy and Company, private bankers in New York City, and Petroleum Administration for War in Washington, DC, pioneering among women in the technical aspect of the oil world. She was a member of the American association of Petroleum Geologists. Mrs. Pyron was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of San Antonio, , Chapter A L of the P.E.O.,. Sisterhood, and the Tuesday Musical Club of San Antonio, the Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity and Kappa Delta Pi, honorary educational sorority. She traveled widely throughout the world, counting travel her chief hobby. Misically inclined from childhood, she was deeply interested in music, art, and literature. She was preceded in death by her husband, Brigadier General Walter Braxton Pyron. She is survived by a niece, Barbara Scott Kollin...

    1. re:John Pyron b 1762,died Loundes Co. Miss
    2. John Pyron b in 1762, possibly S.C. may have been a brother to my William Pyron, b about 1856-57 probably in Hanover Co, Va. The family eventually emigrated to North Carolina, some records show Rowan Co, also Union Co, but eventually they settled permanently in Mecklenburg Co.Willaim married Mary Powell about 1785 and died in January 1850. William's name is on a DAR marker in Monroe, Union Co, N.C.. John also was named on a marker. From a letter John Calvin Pyron (son of William Pyron, Jr, brother to my Andrew Jackson Pyron) wrote to my grandfather Aurelius Milton Pyron, in Oct. 1902, J.C. states there were 3 brothers, William, John and Charles who came from Virginia. In a pension letter record, signed by Winfield Scott, commission of Pensions, dated 13 July 1826, the record shows there was a Revolutionary War pension claim (S-8675). It states William Pyron was born in 1757 in Hanover, Louisa or Henrico County, Virginia. He moved to Caswell Co., N.C. when he was a child. He enlisted in the spring of 1778 and served as Prvt. in Capt. Moore's and Capt. Marlboro's Companies, Colonel Archibald Lytle's regiment of N.C. and was discharged July 1779. He died 27 June 1850, leaving the following children: Mary Helms, Sarah Helms, Emilla Secrest and Jane Crowell who was a resident of Union County, N.C. in 1852. (I have an old map of Union County which shows the property owners listed where they lived in Union County. Overwhelmingly, the name Helms pops up all over the county. No wonder the present Senator, Jesse Helms, from North Carolina gets a majority vote.) >From Kermit Stell's research he found a record that John was indeed born about 1762. Children listed were: Richard B. b 1785; Robert Stoker Pyron b 18 Mar 1774 in Mecklenburg Co. an Allen Pyron married Eve Swath, he died in 1835. See records also from the Dowdle/Pyron book 1745-1976 by Mabel Smith Sykes. She lists a John Pyron and wife Delpha who had lived in several southern states. John Pyron, brother of William, was in Tennessee in 1850 cenuss. The North Carolina State Census 1784-1787, 2nd edition, shows John Pyron in Caswell County, N.C: Charles and William also in North Carolina. A Will Pyron is listed from Mecklinburg County, N.C. in 1820 Tennessee 1820 census lists Joshua Pyron in Smith Co.Mr. Stell said this supports the Tennessee Pyron branch. 1840 Tennessee Cenus: Pyron, Charles in Williamson Co. Charles, Jr. in Williamson Co Joshua in McNairy Co. Thomas in Benton Co. Sarah in Humphries Co. Ron Pyron from the Tennessee branch has excellent work on the Pyron family in a published book. I personally need his address to order the book. Can anyone give me his address? Kermit Stell researched Hatter's list of Early Settlers 1600/1700 in Virginia. A John Perrin and a Margaret Perrin were in Virginia about 1635. From the book, Passengers to America by Tuppes in August, 1635, John Perrin was transported to Virginia on the ship, "Safety." From, Some Emigrants to Virginia, 2nd. ed. a John Perin (1685 in Virginia), Middlesex Co. Records of Levona Carney of San Jose, CA from the Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parrish, Hanover Co, Virginia, 1706 to 1786 found in Virginia State Library the following are listed. p 141. ordered that Thos. Saterwhite have Davis Lyles tithes--Nathaniel Baughons, Thos. Mosely, William Boughns, William Hughes, James Piron, Jr. John Piron, John Ellis, Michael Saterwhite, Charles Piron and James Piron, Sr. tithables to assist him in clearing the road whereof he is surveyor More entires pp 57 and 233 list James and John Pyrant. In the Vestry Book and Register of St. Peters Parrish, New Kent and James City Counties, Virginia 1684-1786 Virginia State Library, mention on p 90 made of Mary Pyrant. p. 384, James, son of James Pyrant, baptz 27 April 1701.William, son of James Pirant, baptz ye 28 March 1703. p. 382 James, son of Susana Piram, baptz ye24 April 1687 It is my humble opinion that when John Calvin Pyron referred to the three Pyron brothers, John, Charles and William as settlers in Jamestown he was speaking from a family tradition--the Perrins,Pirons, Pyrants were early settlers in the Virginia colony. The James Pyrant listed from St. Paul's Parrish on p 216 possibly was an ancestor of the 3 men mentioned. It really is not a long time span from 1709 to the birth of John Pyron in 1762. In the Pension application of William Pyron in 1826 the recorder noted that William Pyron signed his name with an X. Anyone who does genealogy research soon learns how often names are recorded differently during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, particularly in the south.

    1. Andrew Jackson (Jack) Pyron and family
    2. J m bush
    3. Andrew Jackson Pyron was born in Mecklenburg County, NC in 1814or 15, the son of William A. Pyron and his wife, Nancy Crowell. He married Sarah C.M.Simmons born in Charleston,SC. (Sarah was orphaned along with a sister, Harriet and 2 brothers, Charles nd James.) Sarah was 10 years younger than Jack when they eloped. Sarah's guardian did not approve of the marriage. It is my belief the couple moved to Misissippi because the 1850 census records show them living in Marshall County, Mississippi, Holly Springs possibly still on the Findley Farm at the time. The next record we have of this family was his membership in the Masonic Lodge at Franklin, La. Then he moved to Bewick City, LA where he bought a partnership in the Mitchell Company, a mercantile business, known as the Custon House. A Charles Simmons was postmaster in Morgan City (nearby), having been appointed in 1855. By the yar 1860, both Jack and his wife, Sarah, had died, possibly of Yellow Fever. I could not find markers in the Cemeteries in Bewick City. Jack's brother, John Calvin Pyron from Nevada County, Arkansas, took at least 2 of the children back with him, Aurelius Milton for certain and possibly the oldest child, Eugenia. Later, in Lavaca County, Texas after the War between the States, Aurelius Milton Pyron moved there as well as the three sisters. They all married while living near Halletsville. Eugenia H, born in 1844 married Frank Flewellen; Aurelius Milton, born in 1846 married Virginia Blackburn, Annie date of birth unknown married George W. McGonagill and the youngest daughter, Angie married Harrison Stewart. Anyone with information on this family could be of great help to me as I have worked on this for years, with so much still incomplete. Aurelius Milton was my grandfather. Mary Bush, Waco, Texas

    3. Jan, Yes, I have information on this family. The Pyrons have a reunion at Adamsville every couple of years. And they have a genealogy book. Some of the dates in the book don't match up exactly with yours, but yours may be correct. Here is what I have from the book, JOSHUA AND HIS SON WILLIAM RILEY PYRON: Ovie Aquilla Pyron, b. 9-27-1900, d. 5-2-1983 (Rose Hill); md. Gladys Plunk, 3-6-1926; her dates, b. 6-6-1902, d. (living in Humboldt, TN in 1987) (Ovie is the son of Sidney Augustus Pyron, b. 12-1-1877, d. 8-15-1918; md. Augusta Kindle Morris, 12-12-1895; her dates, b. 1-30-1876, d. 11-27-1962 (buried at Mars Hill Cemetery) Augusta is also related to the Sewells and Swains. Her parents: Eliza Jane Swain, b. 7-7-1852, d. 4-6-1884; md. Robert John "Bob" Morris, 1-10-1872; his dates, b. ca. 1845, d. in the 1880s in McNairy Co. under suspicious circumstances when shot from a wagon. __________ Issue of Ovie and Gladys (Plunk) Pyron: 1) Garvin, 2) Betty. 1) Garvin Curry Pyron, b. 4-28 1927 (living in Brownsville, TN); md. Carolyn Anne Chamberlain, 8-23-1953; her dates, b. 6-11-1935. Issue of Garvin and Carolyn (Chamberlain) Pyron: A) Raymond, B) Gary, C) Judith, D) Jerry A) Raymond Edward Pyron, b. 3-27-1956; md. Brenda Bradshaw, 11-25-1976 Issue of Raymond and Brenda (Bradshaw) Pyron: a) Joseph Ray Pyron, b. 10-10-1977 B) Gary Neal Pyron, b. 5-1-1957; mdd. Julie White C) Judith Ann Pyron, b. 5-12-1959; mdd. Bradley Waterworth D) Jerry Lynn Pyron, b. 8-28-1963; md. Allison Hayes 2) Betty Katherine Pyron, b. 6-26-1930 (living in Orlando, FL in 1987); md. 1st, Scott Turner on 6-1-1947; md. 2nd, Stanford Nils Kemp on 8-11-1955; his dates, b. 5-14-1929 Issue of Betty and Stanford Kemp: A) Sandra, B) Beth, C) Stanford, Jr. A) Sandra Kay (Turner) Kemp, b. 12-18-1947 (living in San Francisco area in 1987) B) Gladys Elizabeth "Beth" Kemp, b. 5-2-1957; md. Mike Kraus C) Stanford Nils Kemp, Jr., b. 10-4-1960 _______ I am related to the above family in about 4 different ways. I am descended from William Henry Pyron (1846-1909) who married Sarah Elizabeth Swain (1846-1934). William Henry Pyron was the older brother of John Riley Pyron who married Sarah Frances "Frankie" Harris. John Riley Pyron and Sarah Frances Harris were the parents of Sidney Augustus Pyron and grandparents of Ovie Pyron. That is the Pyron connection. I am also descended from William Ashley Harris (1849-1916) who married Sarah Agatha Harris. William Ashley "Billy" Harris was a brother of Sarah Frances "Frankie" Harris Pyron. That is the Harris connection. I am also descended from Sarah Elizabeth Swain (1846-1934) who married William Henry Pyron above. Sarah was the older sister of Eliza Jane Swain (1852-1884) who married Robert John "Bob" Morris. Eliza Jane and Bob Morris were parents of Augusta Kindle Morris who married Sidney Augusts Pyron. That is the Swain connection. I am also descended from Allen Perry Swain (1822-aft. 1860) who married Harriett Ann Sewell (1829-c1860) who was the daughter of Elias B. Sewell and Jane "Jennie" Runnolds. A. P. Swain and Harriett Sewell were parents of Sarah Elizabeth (Swain) Pyron (my ancestor) and of Eliza Jane (Swain) Morris. Another daughter of A. P. and Harriett was Rachel Amanda Swain (1855-1910) who married James Calvin Pyron, a brother of William Henry Pyron and of John Riley Pyron. That is the Sewell connection. I hope this helps someone.
