Although I have subscribed to the PYLE list for sometime, I do not believe I have posted my query. My great-grand parents were Enoch PILES/PYLES and Emma FRENCH. This PYLES family was from Orange County North Carolina, and moved to Bartholomew Co. Indiana ca 1838. Most of their N.C. records seem to be in Guilford Co. In a will of JOSEPH PYLES recorded in Guilford Co. North Carolina in 1835 he mentions his brothers, William, Moses, Wiley, George, Nathan, Enoch, James and sister Sarah Hughes. He says his mother's name is ELIZABETH SIMPSON. Joseph says he is from Orange County. Before leaving North Carolina George W. married Sarah Rhoads, William married Molly Rhoads, Moses married Susannah Rhoads. I believe these are three daughters of Mary and Phillip Rhoades and all marriages or recorded in Guilford Co. North Carolina. James PILES married Hester PYLES in Orange County, NC. He died Oct. 4, 1865 from Illness related to the Civil War. When Hester applied for a pension as Summary of Proof Enoch and George testified that Hester and James had been married about 35yrs. That Hester was a PYLES and a cousin. The marriage had happened in Orange County, but that no living had attended. He also said the name had been spelled PILES, but was corrected to PYLES. He did not say why. Wiley PYLES and James both died as result of the Civil War. Wiley was sixty years old when he died Sept. 25, 1864 at Decatur, Alabama. He still had two children under 16, and I do not know why he enlisted at such an advanced age. Both their enlistment records show them born in Orange Co. North Carolina. In 1855 Elizabeth SIMPSON sues Enoch PYLES over a land dispute. In the document she says she is his mother. I would love to hear from anyone with knowledge about this family.
