Hi; I have to respond to this, because it is getting real close to home. My great-great-grandfather was William Pyle from Ohio, his son was Robert from Indiana, Robert's son was William who came to California in 1852 and operated the first ferry boat on the Sacramento River at Sutterville. William and Mary Mack Pyle had 8 children in Solano County Ca., before William Died in Santa Ana in 1890. One of his sons settled in the Bakersfield, Kern County area and that was Darius Mack Pyle who was undersherriff in Kern County and also the Assemblyman for Santa Clara County in the 1886 session. Darius Mack Pyle would be my great uncle. His sons were Elmo Pyle and Rea Pyle. My grandfather was Uylesses S. Grant Pyle, born in 1864 in Dixon California. Robert Pyle, born in 1800 in VA. moved to Indiana around the year 1827. He and Martha Malone Pyle were the great-grandparents to Ernie Pyle. Repond, if any of this sounds familiar.
