    1. HISTORY OF MONROE CO.,WV
    2. This is from the book that Rebecca was inquiring about last week. A HISTORY OF MONROE COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA, by Oren F. Morton, Regional Publ.Co.,Baltimore, 1974. "Among the Confederate soldiers who never came home was George I. PYLES, who was captured at Winchester, Sept. 19, 1864 and died at Point Lookout, Jan 18, 1865. Shortly after the war, a fire destroyed all of the headboards in the prison burial ground, thus making it impossible to identify grave 820. A few years later the state of Maryland had the remains of the prisoners of war reinterred in one common grave a mile distant. This mound and the monument thereon were transferred to the care of the United States. Jacob Pyles,(Sarah BAKER, 1818) lived between Salt Sulphur and Lillydale. His wife was a sister to Joseph, John and Frederick BAKER. His brother, Conrad lived and died in Sweet Springs valley, where it is thought their father, whose father is supposed to have borne the name Jacob, made settlement. Children of Jacob PYLES, Jr: George I. PYLES (Elizabeth ARNOT), John PYLES, Allen PYLES, Polly PYLES (George McCOY), Elizabeth PYLES (Lewis SPANGLER), Ellen PYLES (Henry W. ARNOT). John and Allen died soon after their return from the army. Children of George I. PYLES: Henry M. PYLES (Margaret WIKLE), Sarah E. PYLES, Addison A. PYLES (Ellen BELTS,1877), John W. PYLES (Fannie DIDDLE of M.P.), Mary A. PYLES (A.M. HUTCHINSON), Margaret J. PYLES (Richard MCNEER), George W. PYLES (Mary WIKLE), Martha E. PYLES (J.P. FISHER), Emma PYLES (R.W. HILL, 1888). A.A.,G.W., and Emma, and the widow went to Kansas. There are now 54 grandchildren and they are to be found in Monroe, Summers, Greenbrier and Logan, and in Brown County, Kansas. There are descendants of Conrad PYLES in Sweet Springs valley and in Hinton." That's all folks. Sara pyle@airmail.net
