Doris; Thanks for the thanks. I went to the library today and returned some books. Looked for more on Ernie, but the only thing they had was in the children's section and darned if some little tyke (maybe like me) had it out. I'm the Director of Operations for a High School and we do have "Here is your War" in our school library. I'm related to Stan Mack who does the cartoon in Modern Maturity each month and he came out with an illustrated paper back called "Stan Mack's Real life American Revolution." It was named the best book for teenagers for two years at the New York City Library. I had him send me a couple of books to try and sell for him. When I tried to buy a copy from the local bookstore, there was only one copy west of the Mississippi. I learned more about the Revolution from his book than they told me in school. (maybe I was absent that day) I seen the author James Tobin, who wrote the new book on Ernie called "Ernie Pyles War." he was on Booknotes a month ago and I rushed out and bought the book. I suppose you know that Ernie and his wife had a horrible marriage, but this new book reveals a side of Ernie I didn't know about. However, He and I are related close enough that I know what went on in his mind. The Pyles from day one were globetrotters. After all I enlisted in the army in 1955 just so I could travel. I did, I went to Korea. In 1979, I cruised the Mediteranian to follow in the footsteps of Alexander the Great, unfortunately it was less than a month after the Hostage crisis in Iran. So timing is everything as far as we Pyles are concerned. Tell me about "Guns over the Carolinas." We might get Denver Dell Pyle to do a movie for us. I wrote to him and received a nice autographed picture of him as Uncle Jesse Duke. YES, I CARE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | | This passion has consumed me ever since I started doing genealogy and | found that my ggg grandfather was born in S.C. I've always been a | history buff and when I found Col. John Pyle, M.D. in Guns Over The | Carolinas, I've been on a vengence! Then his 'true' story in Howard | Pyle's book did my heart good. I said, "That's the kind of people MY | Pyles' were." | | I have been researching his sons as they were in the right place at the | right time to be the father of my Samuel and Rita's John (who were | brothers, born in S.C. ca 1770). | | I've been in correspondence with several of his line that have sent me | some things that isn't shown in the Pyle book. i.e., Nicholas was | married and had four sons before he married Ann Black. And herein is | where I believe we might just fit! | | Are you collecting Ernie Pyle writings? New Mexico Magazine reprinted | his article in the July special 75th anniversary issue, called "Why | Albuquerque" I have two of his books "Brave Men" and "Here's Your War". | In the latter, he wrote about the North African campaign and my | brother-in-law was there and it made it all clear what they went | through. Ernie even listed men's names and hometowns and my | brother-in-law's name wasn't listed, but a neighbor's was. | | Thanks for your input to the list, makes it very interesting! | | Doris |
