THOMAS W. PYLE: The Man and The School Mr. Thomas W. Pyle was born on October 9, 1888 in Harford County, Maryland. He received his B.S. Degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his M. A. degree from Teachers' College, Columbia University. He also completed advanced graduate work at the University of Chicago, and the University of Maryland. He taught for six years outside the state prior to coming to the Montgomery County Public School system in 1921 as the principal of Poolesville School. In 1926 he became the principal of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School where he served for 14 years. He was appointed supervisor of secondary education in 1940, and assistant superintendent of schools in 1951. He retired in 1958 at the age of seventy. Mr. Pyle passed away on October 9, 1967. He was 79 years old. Thomas W. Pyle devoted 37 years of his life and professional career to the improvement of educational opportunities for boys and girls in the Montgomery County Public Schools. It was in recognition of this outstanding service and dedication that our school was named Thomas W. Pyle Junior High School when it opened in 1962.
