I would appreciate any information anyone can provide on my John Piles/Pyles. I seem to be the only one researching them. Is John, b 1790/1800 the son of Zachariah or Francis? John H. Piles-was born 1790/1800 in Near Kirby, Sherman District, Hampshire Co., VA. He died before 26 Mar 1849 in Near Kirby, Sherman District, Hampshire Co., VA and was buried in Near Kirby, Sherman District, Hampshire Co., VA. This John H. Piles' marriage to Elizabeth Ruckman, daughter of Samuel Ruckman was bonded by John Williams according to Hampshire County records of marriages between 1824 and 1828. John's sister, Elizabeth Piles, married John Williams, same time period. Then John and Elizabeth's, Zachariah Piles, was bondsman for Samuel Ruckman marriage to Elizabeth Watkins on September 8, 1824. John is possibly the father of Thomas (RIN 454), Joseph (RIN 468), and John W. Piles (RIN 369). John married Elizabeth Ruckman, daughter of Samuel and Susannah Ruckman, and in 1850 Francis Piles made his home with "a" Samuel and Elizabeth Ruckman, brother and sister-in-law of Elizabeth Ruckman, deceased wife of John Piles. Francis Piles lived to be nearly 90. Since he was of no relation to Sam and Elizabeth, when he become too old to care for himself they had to put him in the Hampshire County Poor House where he died. Little is known about John and Elizabeth Ruckman Piles. They died about 1849. In Guardian Bonds Book at the Hampshire County West Virginia, courthouse, dated 26 March 1849 is a bond by Solomon Tharp and Samuel Park, Jr. to Susan Piles, orphan of John Piles (& Elizabeth Ruckman). Solomon Tharp's wife, Hannah and John Piles' wife, Elizabeth (Ruckman) were sisters, children of Samuel Ruckman (fact from Deed Book 29/339-40). This explains why in 1850 c. John W. lived with Joseph Haines in 1850 c. and Rector Piles lived with John Haines and Joseph lived William Orndolf. Why was Capt. John H. Piles also living with Tom Ruckman in 1850 c. at age 18? Did John H. and Elizabeth have 2 John's? Howard Pyle makes note in "Pyle, Piles family in America" that in "The Early Records of Hampshire Co., Va." by Sage and Jones is a reference to John H. Piles married to Elizabeth Ruckman, she was the ward of Susannah Ruckman, marriage bond by John Williams, apf. 3-13-1824. The term "ward of" makes one to believe she was not the daughter of, but in custody of Susannah Ruckman. But Elizabeth did name her daughter, Susan, after Susannah Ruckman. It is also noted that John H. Williams signed the marriage bond of another Elizabeth Piles, this, the daughter of Zacheriah Piles less than a month before on the 25th day of February, 1824. Zacheriah signed with an "X." Who was this John H. Williams and was he related to the Ruckman's or Piles'? This would have had Elizabeth being born about 1805 and Zacheriah about 1780 or 1785. John married (MRIN:347) Elizabeth Ruckman-1101, daughter of Samuel Ruckman II-1700 and Susannah-2114 (MRIN:547), on 13 Mar 1824 in Va, Hampshire Co.. Elizabeth was born about 1800 in Ruckman, Hampshire Co., VA. She died before 26 Mar 1849 in Hampshire Co., VA and was buried in Hampshire Co., VA. see John H. Piles, RIN 1100. When Elizabeth was married, her marriage bond said she was a ward of Susannah Ruckman. Therefore, her parents were both dead by about 1820 when she married. John and Elizabeth had the following children: + 2 M i. Benjamin Piles-545 was born 1816 and died 15 Dec 1902. 3 M ii. Joseph Piles-468 was born 1834/1835 in Hampshire Co., Va, Now Wv. Joseph lived with William Orndolf family in 1850, at age 15. He was listed in the census as a laborer. His parents are not mentioned in 1850 census. Lived in dwelling 102, distr 24, Hamp. Co. + 4 M iii. John H. Piles-369 was born 26 Aug 1837 and died 5 Dec 1910. 5 F iv. Susan Piles-1669 was born about 1839/1849 in Near Kirby, Sherman District, Hampshire Co., Wv. Hampshire County WV Guardian Bonds Book lists on 26 March 1849: Solomon Tharp & Samuel Park Jr. to Susan Piles, orphan of John Piles. Solomon Tharp's wife Hannah (Ruckman) and John Piles' wife Elizabeth (Ruckman) were sisters, children of Samuel Ruckman. The fact that Hannah Tharp and Elizabeth Piles were sisters is from the Deed Book 29/339-40. ----------------------------------------------------- Bill Pyles, Titusville, FL --New e-mail address: [email protected]
