Prior to WWII Ernie and my uncle John Howard Pyle were in regular contact with each other by letter. Howard was a newspaper man in Phx., AZ and an NBC employee in the State. When Ernie was preparing to go overseas to his assignment, he stopped in Phx. to see Howard, and my parents and I were invited to have lunch with them. I was about eight at the time. Later, Howard also became a war correspondent for NBC. During their respective service, the military saw to it that Howard and Ernie were never in the same battle zones. After Ernie was killed, Howard was transferred to the Pacific where he had the opportunity to visit the site were Ernie died. Until Howard's passing he kept a color photo of that spot on the wall of his office. We were always told that Ernie was a third cousin to my Dad and his brothers Howard and Maurice.
