Zachariah Piles told a Henry Co., IN census taker in 1900 that he was born in West Virginia and both parents were born in Virginia. His wife Elizabeth Jones disappears after the twins are born and I assumed she died as Zachariah stays near the twin daughters. He remarries to an Arabel and was married circa 1885. Where is unknown. They had one daughter named Ida May, who is in the Henry Co., IN census for 1900. with both parents. Family members who knew Susannah Piles do not know of other siblings of the twins. >> Hello Mary, I saw some earlier correspondence of yours with the Jackson Co OH Genealogical Society. At one time you had Susannah and Sarah born two years apart, 1863 and 1865. Are you convinced now that they were twins, with an 11 MAY 1863 birth date? I believe your Zachariah PILES is the one enumerated both in Hampshire Co VA and Hardy Co VA for the 1850 census. They apparently lived near Rio on the county border, and were counted twice. The Hardy County enumeration has Zachariah, born c1823, Betsy Ann (Elizabeth in the Hampshire Co entry) born c1824 OH, and includes a Sarah C. JONES (age 17 VA). Sarah could easily have been a sister to Elizabeth, thus Elizabeth would be a JONES. Though Zachariah's date is a bit off, I think this is your family. Children of this Zachariah included John H. PILES (who seems to be in Hardin Co OH for the 1880 census), and Benjamin (who seems to be in Miami Co OH for the 1880 census). John H. PILES, son of Zachariah and Elizabeth, was a resident of Clark Co OH (adjoins Miami Co) in 1865 when he married Anna DAVIS. Some of these records are pretty confusing, but I think this is your line. Their movements fit your understanding of the family reasonably well. I further believe that your Zachariah was the son of (widow) Elizabeth PILES who appears in Loudoun Co VA for the 1810, 1820, and 1830 census, and that Zachariah had siblings Francis (born c1782; found him recently in the 1830 Loudoun Co census, page 1, as a near neighbor to Elizabeth, page 3), Leonard PILES (born c1790 and migrated in the 1830s to Montgomery Co IN), and Mary PILES BROADWATER (who married in Loudoun Co in 1809 and lived a couple of doors from (widow) Elizabeth PILES in the 1810 census). Have you located Zachariah in the 1860 or 1870 census (likely in OH or IN)? I have been frustrated in that effort. Jim Smee Pittsburgh PA
