Years ago my husband & I did antiques shows. At on show in King of Prussia, Pa. the dealer next to us was named Pyle. They told us they were the people who gave Gomer Pyle his name on the Andy Griffin Show. They named him Pyle after the family name, they were related to Ernie Pyle also, and Gomer as a joke because of the part he played. As someone not to bright. I think they knew the writer of the show.
