I was almost 13 years old when Ernie Pyle was killed in April 1945. All us kids saw him in the newsreels just before the Hop-A-Long Cassidy feature cowboy movie on Saturday afternoons. Movie tickets were $.09 for kids. We all knew about Ernie Pyle, the war correspondent--and that <as previously stated> he was the soldiers newsman.
