    1. Re: John Henry PYLES in IN
    2. Kathy, I should have kept my mouth shut. On the basis of the obituary information, we're looking for a John Henry PYLE (PYLES/PILES) who would have been about 15 years old for the 1850 census, presumably in Virginia (area to become West Virginia), but also possibly Ohio, since he served from there during the Civil War. That is, he was age 93 in 1928, thus born c1835 if my math is right. I've got lots of notes on 1850 VA/WV and Ohio census records, and expected to be able to find your John Henry, but haven't yet. I also looked for him in 1880 using the LDS transcription of that census, but again can't find him. I would still like to help, and am pretty certain I can if you can provide a few more clues. 1. Would you be able to send me a copy of the death certificate you located. I'm pretty good at deciphering "scrawls", and might be able to make some sense of "Brack" (which doesn't make sense). There's a good chance I will be familiar with a given name that this entry was supposed to be, whereas you're going at it cold. 2. Can you tell me where you were able to find John Henry PYLE/PYLES/PILES after his marriage? (year and county and state)? Just for your information: I don't think we're closely related, but I have a consuming interest in researching this surname (for 20 years now), and would like to solve this puzzle. Your going after his military record has a high probability of answering a lot of questions. (I just wish they weren't so darned expensive to order.) I'm hoping that if that is successfully, you'll at least briefly fill me in on what you've learned (but no obligation there). Best wishes. With just a little luck, I'm sure we can figure out who "Brack" was.
