    1. [PYLE] Andrews AFB, Forest Grove Meth., Bells Meth., Bethany Christian
    2. In hopes that this will provide leads for someone, this is what my father reported to me on his 9 Jan 2001 trip to Andrews AFB and the surrounding area in Prince George's Co., Md. The Chaplain's office at Andrews AFB reported that the cemetery next to the former Forest Grove Methodist Church (now known as Historical Chapel #2) on the base still exists. They gave my father a copy of the book "The Historical Chapel #2, 1805-1998," written and published by the Committee for Historical Chapel #2 of Andrews AFB in 1998. The book is 51 pages long, contains 30 photos, 18 pages of history of the church/chapel, lots of source footnotes and 2 pages listing all the persons buried in the cemetery. The list of burials was compiled by the Toaping Chapter of the DAR in 1955 and recompiled by the Prince George's Co., Md., Genealogical Society in 1982, according to the book. The cemetery was closed to additional burials when W. Ward RYON died, so he was buried at Cedar Hill. As far as my father could tell by looking over the burial pages, the last burial was in 1937. Since the PG Co. Geneal. Soc. compiled the list of burials, I assume they all appear in their "Stones and Bones" book. A few of the names in the list that caught my father's eye were: DUCKETT (Benjamin Lee & Mildred R.); RYON (Isabelle, d. 1918); 12 BEALLs; 7 RANDALLs; Margaret DUVALL; RIDGEWAY; BAKER; BALL; BINGERS; FERGUSON; McDANIELS; POTTER; PUMPHRIES. Once my father has had a chance to read the book on Historical Chapel #2, he will mail it to me. I'll try to post a summary of the history of the former Forest Grove Meth. Church and a list of the people buried in the cemetery. Since the book is under copyright, I can't post all of the information, but will do lookups privately on individual names. The next stop was Bells United Methodist Church, Allentown Rd. & Rte. 5 (Branch Ave.), which backs up to Andrews AFB. The staff told my father that the church was started by Mr. James BEALL (pronounced "BELL" in Md., they said) in his home; later, in 1858, a log chapel was built. The current church is their 4th building. In their cemetery is a mausoleum surrounded by a wrought iron fence, the final resting place of Dr. Chester PYLES and his relatives. Near Bells Methodist is PYLES Lumber Co., which suffered a fire a few weeks ago. In addition to mentioning that Mr. PADGETT (of Padgett's Corner) died 2 weeks ago, the people at the lumberyard referred my father to Mrs. SELLNER, an 82-year-old genealogist who has lived in the area all her life. Her late husband (Chas. W.) had been in charge of Bells Methodist's cemetery (Mr. Kennedy is now in charge of the church's cemetery). She drew a diagram of how to locate Osceola PYLES' (my g-g-grandfather) grave -- a multi-grave plot with stone cornerposts inscribed with a P and only one gravemarker in the plot, inscribed simply PYLES. Final stop was Bethany Christian Church, Padgett's Corner -- I'd never heard of that church before, has anyone else? The staff directed my father to Elaine SCOTT, a lifetime resident, who told him of a private cemetery on adjacent land. She said her grandfather m. Alice R. PILES, whom she said was the 2nd wife, and widow, of William H. PILES (though I have Wm. H.'s 2nd wife as Marceline ALLEN, and an Alice R. as 2nd wife of Osceola PYLES, youngest son of Wm. H.). Mrs. SCOTT said the cemetery was near what used to be William H. PILES' strawberry patch and a holly tree, but the land is now occupied by the Md. State Park Police. They went to the Park Police, who showed them the plot plan of the 19 acres they acquired from Mrs. SCOTT's parents' estate, but they couldn't locate the cemetery. It's rumored to have been a plot set aside for PILES' slaves. Mrs. SCOTT's niece, Margarite (sp.?) OVERTURF of SC, supposedly has a lot of information on the PYLES and is connected to the Internet (a member of this list?). Lani (Pyles) MacAniff
