That period of the 1860's was really topsy-turvy for areas of Georgia (Civil War). Young men served with the south, switched allegiance to the north, etc. etc. Many were killed or captured. I found one relative who was captured and sent north with the requirement that he never go south of the Ohio River, and he never returned to his family in GA. I found a couple others who served with AL units. If you haven't already done so, I would search for a Civil War record for Virgil or Cicero. Might get lucky. Hi all, I see you have listed a Sarah Ann Pyle, married to a cousin John Henry "Pete" Westbrook, Jr. Does anybody here have any information on the Westbrook family and if John Henry had any sisters? I'm excited about this post as this is the first time I've seen a Pyle related to a Westbrooks, as our gggrandfather, Henderson Pile/Pyle born in Fentress Co. TN, married a Dorothea (Dorothy) Westbrooks of VA. I haven't been able to find a marriage record for this couple, and have hit a brick wall with them. Any help/ideas/information would be greatly appreciated! :) Thank you :) Nancy Pyle in Oregon researching for gggrandfather, Henderson Pile/Pyle of TN who later migrated to IA and died in NE. -----Original Message----- From: Doris Haynes [mailto:dhaynes@door.net] Sent: Wednesday, March 24, 2004 1:46 PM To: PYLE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PYLE] Francis M. Nancy is Virgil C.'s mother. There is some conflicting birthplaces given depending on which census you consult. In 1881 she married the Morgan Richardson who is listed as a boarder in the 1880 census. Do you have any idea of the relationship of Julia Ann Richardson Pyle and Morgan Richardson? Morgan and Nancy are buried in New Harmony Cem. in Cedartown, GA. They had a son, James, and I have found some of his descendants. Virgil Cicero's son listed "Virgil" as the father of Virgil Cicero on his death certificate. So he believed his father and grandfather had the same name. If that is true, Nancy first married Virgil Cicero Sr. who died in the 1860s before the 1870 census. That does not explain where the other children came from. I had always assumed Adeline and Nancy were John Jr's daughters in law, but could have been unmarried daughters as you say. I definitely have been unable to find a record of their marriages to any Pyle. Children from other dead Pyle parents is a possibility. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dan Page" <depage@ipa.net> To: <PYLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 24, 2004 1:24 PM Subject: Re: [PYLE] Francis M. Dan, Thanks for that info. I guess I'll hold off and make notations in both families until futher research has been done. Miriah Davis was first wife of Peter. they married 25 June 1826 in Fayette Co., GA. She died before 1840. Peter married Medissa Bridges (I believe this spelling is correct, not Melissa) b. 1824 d. 1902, m. on 23 July 1843 in Floyd Co. GA. Children of Peter and Miriah were: 1. ? Francis M. John Henry "Pete" Westbrook, Jr. (1st cousins) 5. Margaret M. Pyle, 1835 Peter Pyle and Medissa Bridges children: 1. James K.P. Pyle, 1844-1906 m. Sarah J. Mares 2. George M.D. Pyle, 1846- 3. Missoura Ann Pyle, 1847-bef 1860 4. Lewis Pyle, 1849- m. Molly Jeter in 1879 5. Roland Jones Pyle, 1852-ca 1900 6. Benjamin Lafayette Pyle, 1856-1937, m. Amanda E. Mares 7. John Everett Pyle, 1852- m. Georgia Ann Wooley.
I never unraveled the relationship of that Adeline and Nancy who were shown as heads of household on the 1880 Floyd Co. census. Both Adeline and Nancy were living with the elder John and Margaret in Polk Co. in 1870. Not clear to me whether they were daughters or daughters-in-law, but I have them listed as daughters at this point. In that same 1870 household were listed young children: Henry Pyle 5 AL Virgil C. Pyle 4 AL If one looks at the 1880 census of Floyd Co for Adeline and Nancy: Adeline Pyle 28 Henry 15 son (Doode?) 7 daug Sallie 2 daug Nancy Pyle (38?) Cicero 13 son William 9 son Carrie 4 daug I remember wondering if maybe Virgil C. and Cicero were the same person, and the birthplace of AL on that 1870 census might be an important hint. One could reasonably ask who was the father of the additional children born between 1870 and 1880, as neither Adeline or Nancy are shown with spouses. Among various possibilities, at least one is that Adeline and Nancy adopted as sons and daughters all the children listed in 1880. By 1900, Virgil C. was married to Jane Holcomb and they & children were Polk Co. That census shows his birthplace as GA but both parents born in AL, which would probably rule out Nancy as his mother. That's as far as I went (stumbled?) with Virgil or Cicero. Dan At 10:29 AM 3/24/2004 -0600, you wrote: >Dan: > >Good analysis!! Dan: Good analysis!! For years I had assumed the 1860 census listing of Mrs. Julian Pyle meant there was a Mr. Julian Pyle and that Peter was the father of Francis. Seems there was some other evidence of Mr. Julian, but I'll have to check my notes at home. Do you have any theories of the relationship of Nancy Pyle in that 1880 census with John M. and Rocksey? Doris, Checked my notes: I have a Francis M. listed as a son of Peter but have a note with the same question you have about whether he was the same person as listed as a son of John. Actually, they might both have had a son of that name. An awesome number of people were named after that Rev. War hero Gen. Francis Marion, "The Swamp Fox." The Peter "Pyles" household was on the 1850 census of Floyd Co. GA, and the next enumerated household was that of Francis M. with wife Julia. There was no other Francis M. listed anywhere in the south, by any surname variant. I don't think that both Peter and John had a son Francis M. The proximity of Francis to the Peter Pyles household is suggestive that Peter was the father of Francis. Apparently Francis M. had died by 1860, as Julie appears as Mrs. Julian Pyle as head of household on the 1860 census of Floyd Co. Included in her children is her first son John M. age 9. John M. appears with his wife Rocksey on the 1880 census of Floyd Co. Living with John M. and Rocksey is the elder John Pyle, and he is listed as "grandfather." I find it compelling that he is identified as grandfather, and that the first son of Francis M. was named John. Unless someone produces some very persuasive evidence, I think we should conclude that the Francis M. who married Julia was a son of John. I've been told Peter Pyle had a 1st marriage to Melissa Bridges in 1826, and a 2nd marriage to Miriah Davis. However, I wouldn't bet on that. Maybe it was the other way - i.e. Miriah was the first wife? Peter Pyle's first wife must have died just before that 1850 census as she's not in the household, and the youngest child listed was Lewis, age 1. The oldest listed was Medissa (not Melissa) age 26, and clearly too young to be the mother of the early children of Peter. I once figured Medissa was a daughter but I now think she was the 2nd wife. The Pyle Cemetery at DeSoto Parish, Louisiana has a stone marked Medissa Pyle, 1820-1902, so that's probably her. By 1860, Peter "Piles" had moved to DeSoto Parish, LA (P.O. Mansfield). Peter is shown as age 57, and with him is "Malisa" age 40, listed as "matron." Also, the household has 4 children younger that Lewis. So one could ask who was the mother if it wasn't Malisa or Medissa. She was shown as "Madici" on the 1880 census but one 1880 census index transcribed her name as Mordecai. Her father's birthplace is shown as SC and her mothers as GA. Dan At 10:22 PM 3/23/2004 -0600, you wrote: >Can someone help me. I have Francis M. Can someone help me. I have Francis M. Pyle, born 1826 married to Julia Ann Richardson as son of John Pyle, Jr. and Margaret (?Rowan?) AND I also have him as son of Peter Pyle and Miriah Davis. Which is correct? I have the marriage date for the latter one 17 Sept 1843 in Floyd Co., GA. I know both families lived in Floyd at one time. (John, Jr. and Peter were 1st cousins). Thanks, Doris

Becky: Since you've been out of the loop I was wondering if you or anyone out there knows of a Claude Wilson Pyle who in 1967 was living in St. Petersburg Fla. His family Pyle/Wilson were from White Co. IL. I am looking for any links to Francis Piles b. about 1810-1820. Francis may have traveled from Monroe County to Ironton, Ohio (Lawrence County) with the family of Samuel Wiseman and Anna (Swope). He married their daughter Susannah Wiseman 1838 in Ohio. I would be interested in speaking with anyone connected to the Piles-Wiseman line. Thanks! Karen Pyles
I was always told that it was over slavery. My great, great grandfather, William Henry Harrison Pyle was supposed to have moved to Indiana because he was against slavery and most of the rest of his family wasn't. We were just not sure who actually changed the spelling. teresa > > PYLE-D Digest Volume 04 : Issue 43 > > Today's Topics: > #1 [PYLE] Absalom Pyle/Piles 1789 - 1 [Becky Pyle <becky@ctcn.net>] > #2 Re: [PYLE] Absalom Pyle/Piles 1789 ["Ben Pyle" <benelle@earthlink.net>] > #3 [PYLE] origins of Pile name [dan pile <danpile@bellsouth.net>] > > Administrivia: > To unsubscribe from PYLE-D, send a message to > > PYLE-D-request@rootsweb.com > > that contains in the body of the message the command > > unsubscribe > > and no other text. My niece is researching her family for school. If anyone has information on our family name, please provide. Also, (we are from the Lt William Pile family in Breckingridge County, KY) I have heard two theories that some of our family may have changed the name from Pile to Pyle: 1. over slavery 2. symbolic revolt agains England during Revolutionary War Has anyone heard of this as well? Thanks, Dan Pile
No, don't have anything on Absalom Pyle/Piles, but wanted to say congratulations on adding to the family tree.
