    3. Hi Bill and Carole: My husband's line also descends from William Pyle b. 1776 PA and m. Mary Elizabeth Jones b. 1778 VA. Am I correct in assuming that in 1776 and 1778 that is was VA and later WV? We descend from Harrison, Zachariah's younger brother and are therefore Ross County., OH Pyles. We also feel that Mary's parents were Abraham Jones and Phereby Entrekin from Hampshire Co. VA who came to Ross County in 1799. We think that William and Mary followed them to Ross County in 1805 when William purchased land. We know that William was born in PA and later moved to VA with his parents when he was a child. Do you know anything about William's parents? Thank you for any way you can help us. Surnames: Pyle Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VVBBAEB/664.2.1.1 Message Board Post: Galen, there are always errors in books such as the one you quote, in this case probably because there are always errors in published books of transcriptions of records such as the Orange Co. will. Given the following, it's quite certain that Samuel, the son of Dr. John Pyle, died in Greenville Co., SC, in 1787, where many of his family members had relocated- including the Blacks, the Brashers (married into both the Pyle and Black families) and some of Samuel's brothers, including Dr. John Pyle, Jr. Greenville Co., SC. Estate Records - Greenville County Courthouse, Probate Judge's Office. Abstracted from Loose Papers found in designated Apartment and File Numbers. Book A, page 1-5 Apartment 6, File 369, 1788 Pyle, Samuel, dec'd 21 Nov 1787 Adm. Mary Pyle, 20 Dec 1787 Administrative Bond signed by Mary A. Pyle, Hans Black and Jacob Black on 21 Nov 1787. App. 20 Dec 1787, Henry Machem, Aquila Brasher, John Brasher and Michael Robins. Book A, page 194 - 195 25 Jan 1790 We, Francis Bremar and Peter Freneau, for 10 shillings, assign unto John Pyles in trust for the children of Samuel Pyles, dec'd, all our rights, title, and interest in 640 acres on both sides of Reedy River, including the mouth of Stoney Creek, bounded on the north by James Lesley's land. (signed) F. Bremar, Peter Freneau Witnessed: Robert Maxwell, James Martin Proved by oath of Robert Maxwell, Esq. during the February term and rec'd 23 July 1790 The will of Hans Black, filed in Christian Co., KY, about 1807, proves that one of his daughters was the wife of Samuel Pyle. Neither Dr. John Pyle, Sr.'s son Samuel nor a daughter Mary were mentioned in his will, written in 1799. In Samuel's case, that was most likely because he was already dead- and in Mary Hall's case, there is no evidence that she was the Dr.'s daughter. Of course, Ann, (aka Nancy, which was the usual nickname for Ann) is mentioned in the will. Just taking a quick look on the Web, it appears that the Samuel who died in Orange Co. MIGHT be Samuel Pike, a son of John Pike and Abigail Overman. At any rate, I'd suggest getting a copy of the original Orange Co. will from the NC state archives- the actual will, not the will book copy, if possible. If the last name has been transcribed incorrectly, it could have been done when the will was put in the county will book as well as when a transcription was made for publication. If the last name is correct, perhaps this Samuel is connected to the Conrad/Coonrod Pyle/Pile family of Orange Co.-- a completely different family from the Dr.'s.

Surnames: Pyle, Black Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VVBBAEB/664.2 Message Board Post: Sorry, I can't be of much help on this- my computer died a few days ago, and although I do have a backup of my files, it will be awhile before I can get to it- and I'm just wading through some of this as you are, anyway. Your post brought back to my attention something that had confused me before- i.e., there seemed to be two claimants to be Samuel, son of Dr. John Pyle, Sr.- one who died in NC, one who died in SC. It seems most reasonable that Samuel Pyle, son of the Col./Dr. (Sr.) died in Greenville County, SC, where at least one of his brothers (Dr. John, Jr.) was also living- there is some record of the estate of Samuel Pyle there, and Hans and Jacob Black signed the bond. The widow was apparently, even if not explicitly stated to be, Mary A. Pyle. So it would seem that Hans' daughter Mary was Samuel's wife. not Jean. If you go to : http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~monticue/Pyle_line.htm there is a page detailing some of this. If, as you say, the NC will is Pike. not Pyle, that is where some of the confusion is coming in. Unless there is some other evidence that proves it, it seems to me that the Halls are not connected to the Pyles but to the Pikes. As mentioned in the Web page I refer to, there are deeds which name the other sons of Dr. John Pyle, Jr., even though they weren't mentioned in his will. That still leaves the question open as to who Jean married. Have you actually seen a copy of Hans' will? I wonder if the transcription of it is correct. The only son of the Dr. (Sr.) that I can think of whose wife hasn't been identified is William, who migrated to KY, then to IL, where he was apparently chased out of Union Co. by later immigrants who recognized him as a former Loyalist. At that point he just disappeared from sight, at least for me, to this point. Not knowing how old Jean might have been, I don't know whether it's possible she may have been married to a grandson.
