    3. Hi, I have hesitated to post anything, because I have just recently gotten info on my Pile ancestors and some of it seems somewhat conflicting. Thanks to Ron Pyle, I at least have lots of info to be confused about. Another recent net "cousin" is Connie Kuykendall(descended from Samuel Pile) and between them and Richard Manion (second cousin) this is what I have to date on the Pile/Piles/Pyle connections. 3. Sara; Every place I look for my associated branches I find the Bratton family. Howard and Jane's son-in-law was a Bratton, but I found the Bratton connections, as well as my Malone connections through Indiana State Library when I was searching for Pyle. At that time all the librararies were extremely liberal with their information and they sent me copies of pages from "Parke and Vermillion counties, The first 100 years 1824-1924" that contained information on Pyle, Mack and Malone. Cousin Frances Pyle married Wilson Bratton in Vermillion in 1855. I also have a file on Malone's that you are welcome to and also my file on Brattons'. Interesting enough, I also found that my ex-wife's family descended from the Brattons. Her maiden name was Bristol. This is sure a strange world, isn't it? 1. PYLE line
    2. Hello, Pyle Rooters. My son (Peter, Jr.) and I have been observing your postings for a few days and have seen a couple of items of interest already. My son does most of the research. I fill in where I can. The following are direct ancestors of the PYLE line we believe to be ours. Peter Charles Pyle (my husband) son of Franklin Dale Pyles (1902/1989) son of Charles G. Piles (1877/1920) son of John H. Piles (1846/ ) son of Jahiel T. Piles (1813/ ) son of John Piles son of Jerimah Piles (1762/ ) We are 'stuck' here. Anyone out there share ancestors? We do not have reams of info but will share any that we do have. Good searching. Jean n8669p@pacbell.net

    1. bluebook
    2. Ron Pyle
    3. Cynthia; According to the Howard Pyle "bluebook", some feminists refer it to the Jane (Weaver) Pyle "bluebook." They did a fantastic job putting it together and I happen to be lucky enough to find a copy at the state library when I first started this crazy hobby. I ordered a copy and have been able to chase down quite a few of the relatives and make a few assumtions concerning others. However, the Pyle/Pile families were never ones to sit still and so they present quite a challenge when it comes to tracing them. My Harvey and Mack lines were precise in their recordkeeping and I have the Harveys back to 1400 and my ex wife's Bristol line back to the same period. The Harveys claim their roots back to 940 AD in Scotland with the landing of Sturgis the Stout landing in his viking ship. Anyway, getting back to the "Bluebook!" The references you should be looking for concerning the Richard Piles family are spelled out and they are: Claude Conway Pile, MT. Hope, Kansas, 67108 "New England Families" edit. by William R. Cutter, 1913, vol 11, page 849 "Register of Marylannd Heraldic Families" by Alice Parran, page 302 Washington Co., KY. Deed and Will books History of Shelby, Co. IN., Richard Pile came to Ind. in 1823. Wills, Deeds, Marriages of Washington Co. KY. St Rose Church, Springfield, Washington Co., KY. Marriages. Information On Richard C. Pile family as given by Claude Conway Pile, as told to him by Rufus Moody Pile. Nelson Co. KY. Vol ll Mar. bonds 1785-1832 KY. geneal. 7 biography' Vol. 5, page 267 Pioneer History of Wash. Co. KY. "History" by O.W. Baylor on the Pile family, page 207 Those are the references. My belief is that Francis Piles and Richard Piles came to Maryland from the same area in England as Robert, Nicholas and Ralph Pyle/Pile, but it seems they arrived a bit earlier. John Piles, Gentleman also settled in Maryland. Francis Piles name was carried on the land records in Maryland from 1671. Dr. Richard Piles moved to Maryland around the year 1699, then returned to England and married Mary Belt Fowler. I feel that Dr. Richard and Francis Piles are connected. I also feel that Francis Piles and our Zachariah and William are related. However the hour is late and if this is new information to you I will be happy to continue in the morn. Ron Pyle

    3. Bob, My Malone search has been a bust. I'm looking for the parents of my gg-grandmother Martha Malone Pyle, who was married to Robert Pyle. Martha was born in 1802 and married my gg-grandfather in 1822 at Chilicothe, Ohio. My g-grandfather William Pyle and his brother Samuel were born in Chilicothe in 1824 and 1826, before the Pyles moved to Eugene, Vermillion Co. Indiana around the year 1827. There were tons of Malones in Eugene around that era and were very astute businessmen. Martha's father was William Malone and Robert and Martha inherited his home and property passing it down through the family. Clarence Arthur Pyle was the last to own it before he started dirt farming all over the states. Cousin Ernie Pyle wrote in his Auto-bio that Clarence Arthur Pyle ended up in LA. poorer than a churchmouse. My gg-grandparents Robert and Martha Malone Pyle were the g-grandparents of Ernie Pyle, reporter and war correspondent. They passed away in Florence, Williamson Co., TX. in the year 1867. I believe we have a connection in the David and Zachariah Piles line and I believe that this line is descended from the Francis Piles line from Prince George Co., MD., I think that we may also connect through the Richard Pile from MD. line. I think that the father of David and Zachariah Piles was James Piles, but could be John, funnier things have happened to me since I took up this crazy search. If you are serious about any type of Malone search, I can introduce you to my files on the Malones and you will definitley believe that you may be your own grandfather and grandmother! 2. This note is not about Spam that comes in cans. It is about junk mail on the internet that is referred to as spam. It was spamming that caused the Maiser crash as many of you remember. There has been a lot of discussion lately among listowners about spam mail, particularly on AOL. You do not have to tolerate your mailbox being flooded with junk mail that is sometimes pornographic, it is against the law. The following may be of help to those of you that are receiving this type of mail. If you are having this problem and want more assistance, let me know and I'll get the answer for you. 2. Dear Folks, Here is the latest update with additions and corrections. In the future, I will only update once a month or so. We are now at 46!! For those of you that used to receive Maiser lists you know that we were able to get the names and e-mails of subscribers to various lists. It was very simple. RootsWeb doesn't provide the names of subscribers, only e-mail addresses. The only way I know when we have a new subscriber is if they post a note to the list or I happen to check the listowner utility. I then match the e-mail address with the person posting a message so it gets a little more complicated. If your name isn't here but your address is, please e-mail me. 3. This is my line, at least the one in Hampshire County. I believe there were several Zachariah Piles. I need to do more research. The Zach in Monongalia Co. had a son John too according to the will you recently published. Sara, I am feeling better from the operation but it is my Meniere's that is giving me trouble. I am afraid to drive to the Orlando library, but will do that and do some more research very soon. ---------- From: pyle@airmail.net[SMTP:pyle@airmail.net] Sent: Thursday, July 24, 1997 1:02 AM To: PYLE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Zachariah PILES While I was at the library today I recopied the Index for the Virginia 1820 Census even though it is reproduced in H.PYLES Bluebook. The thing that caught my eye was that in the PYLE bluebook there is only one Zachariah listed, in Hampshire Co. The record I copied shows Zacheriah (sic) in Monongalia Co. Are these father and son? The same ones that were in my post a few days ago re: Zachariahs will in 1840? The will was filed in Monongalia and Green Cos. for the elder Zachariah as stated in the bluebook. Was the son in Hampshire in 1820? BTW, there are three John Piles/Pyles listed in three different W.Va. counties as CSA soldiers. Sara

    3. I was just writing about this today and it pops up: Things happen for the best. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Calendar of Free Classes & Events August, 1997 ------------------------------------------------------------------ After spending two months revamping its web site, Spectrum Virtual University will kick off a new round of classes in mid-August, sporting a new look and a simplified approach to online learning. Classes will remain free to the public as they have always been but traditional semesters have been replaced by a monthly calendar and enrollment forms have been eliminated. "Life moves in the fast lane on the Internet and people don't want to sit around waiting for things to happen," said Paul Leighton, a spokesman for VU. "Going to a monthly schedule makes sense because new classes will always be starting and people can jump right in." Eliminating enrollment forms also makes sense, Leighton explained, because Internet e-mail has become increasingly unreliable and forms often go astray. "Now students can just drop in on classes that look interesting, and we can focus our energies on teaching rather than paperwork," he added. The web site sports a user-friendly interface permitting students to move quickly and easily from one classroom to another. New "learning channels" have also been created. Each channel has its own classroom area, library, and web-based bulletin board where students can ask questions and take part in online discussions with instructors and fellow classmates. The web site is now running on a dedicated server and the bulletin boards have been redesigned. Sara Kennedy, a member of the VU web design team, said 10-15 new learning channels will be added each month and live lectures will also be hosted. Later this fall, the campus will begin "broadcasting" classes to users' desktops, using the latest "push" technology. The Calendar of classes for August follows. New classes will be announced on the 25th of every month. Those desiring to receive future Calendars can subscribe to the Virtual U mailing list at <http://www.vu.org/subscribe.html> or e-mail <Subscribe@VU.org). ------------------------------------------------------------------ Calendar of Classes for August, 1997 ------------------------------------------------------------------ "Designing A Genealogy Web Page" (Channel 32) <http://www.vu.org/channel32/> Interest in genealogy has soared thanks to quick and easy access to a global database of information that can be accessed with any desktop computer. Scores of genealogy sites have sprung up on the World Wide Web, created by people interested in researching their family trees. This summer expert Marthe Arends will teach "Designing A Genealogy Web Page" at the Virtual U. The class begins Aug. 18 and will run 11 weeks. The goal of the class is to help participants get their genealogy and family history on the web. Weekly topics will include HTML basics, how to design a genealogy web page, and how to put one's family tree online. The class will also discuss where to find genealogy clip art, animated graphics, audio and video clips, and JavaScript; how to create guest books, query forms, and surname lists, and how to publicize a genealogy web site. A basic knowledge of HTML is recommended. Access to the World Wide Web and the ability to download files is required. Marthe Arends is a respected author and lecturer with 16 years experience in the field. She is editor and publisher of "Online Pioneers," a popular genealogy newsletter. This is Marthe's second semester at VU. Last spring, she taught "Introduction to Online Genealogy" to a packed classroom of 8,000 virtual students. ------------------------------------------------------------------ "PC Basics: Meet Your Computer!" (Channel 23) <http://www.vu.org/channel23/> You've got a computer on your desktop, a keyboard in front of you, and you've found the ON switch. Now what? "PC Basics" will take beginners on an indepth tour of their personal computer. What's a RAM chip? How does a modem work? What about those weird messages that flash on your screen? This 8-week workshop will explain what you've always wanted to know about your computer -- and more! Weekly lessons will be supplemented by informal class meetings and chat sessions with the instructor and fellow students, allowing participants to develop a practical understanding of the basics. Instructor Christy McBride has been developing and teaching inter- active courses at Virtual U for several years. She describes herself as an avid computer enthusiast who has been fascinated by computers for as long as she can remember. She holds a degree in Microcomputer Applications, and she is currently on the faculty of a community college. ------------------------------------------------------------------ "HTML & Web Design for Beginners" (Channel 21) <http://www.vu.org/channel21/> Now that most larger ISP's offer unlimited access to the Internet for $19.95 a month and many include a free web page in their basic subscription, the rush to build a home on the World Wide Web is on! But once you arrive, the task of building a web site that is interesting and visually cool may not be as easy as you expected. This 8-week class is for the person with absolutely NO experience in HTML or web design. The goal is to impart a simple working knowledge of HTML tags and the basic steps to build a home page on the World Wide Web. Students will receive weekly lessons and individual attention by e-mail as needed. The instructors will also host weekly online meetings which will give participants the chance to ask questions, obtain further instruction and swap ideas with classmates. Lead instructor Jean Engel began her journey on the World Wide Web several years ago as a student in an HTML class at the Virtual U. When she volunteered to teach HTML 101, she described herself as "just an everyday person who wants to use what I've learned to help others learn HTML and avoid having to go through months of unproductive and dissatisfying attempts as I did." Today, Jean, who holds a degree in Drama/Communications from the University of New Orleans, is an accomplished web designer and graphic artist in New Jersey. She has been on the VU faculty since 1995. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Copyright ©1997 Spectrum Learning Network. 3. Hi Group; Here is a good multi search engine that I picked up at Virtual University's on-line genealogy course. every one should take the next class! To search all the engines from one address use <www.dogpile.com/> and you can bring up a lot of genealogical sites, plus much more. All of Howard Pyle's illustrations should be there. If you are looking for Pyle e-mail addresses and phone #'s go to <query1.whowhere.com/> and they will provide you with what you need.
