    1. Re: New PYLE Cousin
    2. Welcome to the PYLE Family list, Pat! We are so glad to have you join us. This is a very active list and I believe you will enjoy it. We do have a few guidelines regarding postings, etc. All genealogical postings should be addressed to the list. This also includes responses to queries. For example, if you are responding to a query that I make, then you should address it to my e-mail with Cc to the list address or vice-versa. It is easiest to just click on "reply to all". If you have a message for someone of a personal nature, then you would certainly want to send that privately. If you are posting a very long document or gedcom, then it should be done in 2 or 3 postings rather than the whole thing at once. For instance, you might be sending xxx pt. 1, xxx pt. 2, xxx pt 3, etc. The reason for this is very simply that some providers cannot handle large pieces of mail at one time. Please do not send attachments to the list because there has been a problem with that on some servers. If you have a document that is too large to do a cut and paste, then post a description of it to the list to see who might want it sent directly. Or, I possibly could arrange to have it stored on a server for retrieval, just let me know. If you have any questions about the list or you are not sure of what to do, please e-mail me at pyle@airmail.net Glad to have you join us. 3. Becky, you wrote: I am not able to find any info on about Stephen Pyle. None of the children, when they were living knew anything about the parents of Stephen Pyle. On the 1900 Cass County North Dakota Census, it states his parents were from Ohio. According to family, Stephen's parents died when he was a young lad in Wisconsin. Have you tried the 1860 and 1870 census, you should be able to find him with his family there. If he was born before the census taker came by and if his parents were still alive when he was 10 yrs old. Try the ND and Wis census and the Ohio census. People moved alot then. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck. Peggy Pyle Mt Vernon MO 65712

    1. ERNIE
    2. Ron Pyle
    3. Hi; Just a little information from this side concerning one of our relations. These are items I gleaned from the newspapers, magazines and other sources. Most of it came from Lee Millers, "The Story of Ernie Pyle." I have doing a book for my children and hope to have all the answers about the ancestors by then. Hopefully, most of those answers will come from YOU! Here goes, enjoy! Ernie Pyle Ernie Pyle Was born on August 3, 1900 and was raised on the the Sam Elder farm in Helts , Indiana where his father William Clyde Pyle was a tenant farmer. William Clyde Pyle and my grandfather Uylesses S. Grant (Pop) Pyle were first cousins. Ernie was raised on the farm in very poor conditions, he hated farming and said that his worst nightmare was the south end of a horse going north, reffering to the many hours he spent plowing . This was sort of a variation on "if you ain't the lead dog, the scenery never changes!" While his friends were drafted for service into the first world war, Ernie was 5"2" tall and weighed a little over 100 pounds. Not able to pass a physical, he entered Indiana State University where he studied Journalism from 1919 to 1923. He left school just months before graduating to become a cub reporter in Laporte, Indiana. Ernie worked for the Washington Post, The New York Journal and Scripps-Howard's newspapers before becoming a war correspondent. Ernie was famous for his columns he wrote about the fighting man during the second world war, but was actually a syndicated columnist in almost 100 newspapers before he went to Europe. He was known for his homey human interest stories and as the "Hoosier Vagabond," he filed articles from across the United States, South America and Central America and he and his "rider," as he called his wife visited every state in nine months in their little roadster. He was managing editor of Scripps-Howard newspapers in New York at one time and at wars end had syndicated columns in almost 200 major newspapers. He saw more war than most of our fighting men and reported from foxholes, under trees and where ever he could set up his typewriter. Hal Boyle, a correspondent with the Associated Press called himself "The poor mans Pyle" while Ernest Hemingway a fellow correspondent refered to himself as "Ernest, the rich man's hemorroid." Ernie hated the war and spent as much of his time in the field with his soldiers. Twice in Europe he came close to death and received a Purple Heart for wounds he received at Anzio Beachhead. He was most proud of his Pulitzer prize won for distinguished correspondence in 1943. Once a sacreligious soldier refered to Ernie as a "Poor man's god". The Indiana University Alumni Monthly picked it up and reported that his writing was reminiscent of the Bible. When Ernie received a copy, he pouted for days and when they asked him why he didn't feel honored, he replyed with that chuckle of his, "I never did think the Bible was very well written." While living in New York, Ernie and his wife Jerry opened up their apartment to friends from the air mail service and began writing a column devoted to the aviators that flew the mail planes. He retired his aviation column after his promotion to managing editor of the newspaper and in 1932 Amelia Earhart presented him with the expensive gold watch he was wearing when he was killed by Japanese sniper fire in the Ryuku Islands on April 18, 1945. First buried on Ie Shima, his body was later transferred to Punchbowl Crater in Hawaii. His wife Jerry died nine months later. On April 18, 1995 in Dana, Indiana, public ceremonies were held featuring dedications of two new museums next to the home where Ernie was born, now a state memorial site. Attending these ceremonies were Bill Mauldin, the Pulitzer Prrze winning cartoonist, Burgess Meredith who played the part of Ernie in "G.I. Joe", Paul Tibbets who piloted the plane responsible for dropping the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima and William Windom who has played Ernie for years in a one man show. Andy Rooney who at the age of 22 and a reporter for the Stars & Stripes in Europe, shared a tent with Ernie and reported that "Pyle was a most delightful drunk!" and still remembers him tap dancing out of the tent flap in his long underwear. Once when there were bees flying out of a hole in the dirt floor, Andy was covering the holes because he had visions of hundreds of adults and their babies down there coming to attack them. Ernie told Andy to leave them alone and later wrote that he could not see how a survivor of war could ever be cruel to anyone or anything ever again! Ron Pyle

    3. Ron, Thanks for the info. I believe that my branch of Pyles are a southern branch of the original branch in Pa from Bishop's Canning, Wilts. There were a mixture of both branches in Tex. ca 1850. Living in Montgomery County in the vicinity of my gg grandfather, John Pyle, as shown on the 1850 census, were Harlans and Lindleys that were related to Pyles in N.C., Pa and Christian Co. Ky. If you look back at their migration patterns they all stayed pretty much together. One brother might go with cousins to a new location and soon other brothers would follow. At least this seemed to be the pattern in my own line. They went from GA>Al>Miss>La> then to Texas where they seemed to "fan out" from southeastern counties to northern counties. Another 'clue' to me is the naming pattern. Both branches have used Samuel, John and Nicholas over and over for as far back as I can go (1500's) to present day. Let's Keep Digging, that missing link in the chain is there somewhere!! Doris

The son George TURNER Pyle b. 19 Jan 1800 Henrico Co. , m. ca 1822/3 Buckingham Co. VA to Nancy Anise Gordon. Family lived Cumberland Co. before moving to Buckingham Co.. Family moved to Morgan Co. IN ca 1833, then to IA in 1855. Any help would be appreciated. .Patrick Murray pat.murray@juno.com Des Moines, IA

    2. Hi Scott and welcome to the PYLE list. You are subscriber number 57! Ron posted the list with your story earlier today and hopefully someone on the list may have information for you. It seems as though other members of the list have mentioned William PYLE in their posts. Might have been Harry. We have just a few rules: All genealogy posts go to the entire list and responses to queries are copied to the list as well. The reason for this is that someone may get a clue on their ancestors when reading a response to someone's else's question. Also, if you have a large document that you want to post, please post it in sections so that people with smaller "mailboxes" don't have problems receiving. We don't send attachments to the list for the same reason. If you have any questions about the list, please don't hesitate to ask. 3. Dear Doris, Lee G. Miller in his book "The Ernie Pyle Story" reports that Ernie last seen his uncle Chester Arthur Pyle in the back woods of LA. as a share cropper and poor as a church mouse. Ernie was able to finance a trip for them to go back to Dana, Indiana to see the family. They shed tears when they seen the cornfields of Indiana. Chester Arthur Pyle's grandparents Robert and Martha Malone Pyle moved to Williamson County TX. from Vermillion County Indiana after the 1860 census. The rest of the family moved west or stayed in Indiana and Ohio. Can anyone tell me why these people moved South? Maybe they had kin there? If anyone can shed light on this subject, let me in on it!
