    1. Growing Pains on Roots-L
    2. Dear Cousins, I am posting a note that I received today from Dr. Brian Leverich regarding the slow down on RootsWeb. Several of us have noticed how slow the messages have been coming in. I thought you might find this of interest. Sara pyle@airmail.net From Dr.Brian Leverich: As you probably know, load on RootsWeb has been skyrocketing. The lists.rootsweb.com server now handles about 50% of the load of the biggest listserver on Earth (plum.lsoft.com), and the www.rootsweb.com server now handles about 20-40% of the load of www.microsoft.com (and they use 15 servers (-8 ). One problem we're having is that the Linux operating system just doesn't seem to be able to handle this load gracefully. We've been having multiple system crashes each day, and it's basically preventing us from doing other things we want to do (like get search engines up and Web interfaces to your message archives). Anyway, the solution seems to be shifting to a different version of Unix -- FreeBSD -- which is generally regarded as much more stable under load than Linux. FreeBSD is used by a number of very large sites, including Yahoo and ftp.cdrom.com (the world's busiest FTP site). We'll be converting lists.rootsweb.com and www.rootsweb.com to FreeBSD over the next few days. You can expect some down time and probably some annoying glitches as we make the transition. Please bear with us -- I think we'll have the moves completed in the next few days, and I'm guessing that we'll be fully back to normal (including achieving our old 98%+ uptime performance) within two weeks.

    2. J E RUSE
    3. Joy, Thanks for posting what info you have on John Piles, Jr. s/o John PIles, Sr. & Mary Hunter. There is no question that his first wife was Jemima Moxley, widow of William Windsor, whom she mar. ca 1741 in Fairfax Co., VA and by whom she had 2 sons - William & James Windsor. After William's death she mar. John Piles, Jr. & had 6 children: Patience mar. Rob't McClain, Sr; Ruth mar. Chas. Dawson; Elijah mar. Henrietta & Hannah; David mar. who?; Sarah mar. Thomas Hawkins & Hunter mar. Christina & Nancy Fortney. Jemima Moxley was d/o Thomas Moxley & Anne Gunnell of Fairfax Co., VA and was b. ca 1728 probably in Fairfax Co. I would be very happy if you find the tombstone listings for Fairfax Pond Cemetery, Joy. It would be a great help. Just wanted to give you the background on Jemima Moxley-Windsor-Piles. 3. Hello everyone - I have the listings in the Pyles Cemetery - and also the wives of John. John, b 11 Mar 1728/Prince George's County, MC, was one of seven children of John and Mary (Hunter) Piles; his grandparents were Francis and Mary (Bramal) Piles and his great grandfather was also named Francis. He married Jemima (Windsor?) prior to 13 Mar 1746 when their eldest son Elijah was born. John's and Jemima's children: Elijah 1/m Hannah, 2/m Henrietta; Patience m Robert McClain; Ruth m Charles Dawson; Sarah m Thomas Hawkins; David; Hunter 1/m Christina 2/m Nancy Fortney; Henry (unproven as a child) By 11 Nov 1783 John was married to the widow Ann Nancy (Tolle) Squires (widow of Thomas Squires) and living in Loudoun Co, VA. They had no issue - but Ann was my 5th g.grandmother. Sara, somewhere I have the listing for the Fairfax Pond cemetery - there's only three or four graves marked with readable stones out of about 100 or so there. Thomas Squires is buried over in Loudoun Co in what is now the middle of a barnyard near Arcola; however, I bet that John and Ann/Nancy Tolle Squires are in two of the unidentified graves. Joy

    1. Andrew Piles
    2. Hi Joan, My mother-in-law is Andrew Piles' granddaughter. Her understanding is that he is the son of Daniel Mitchell Pyles and Mary Catherine Miller. After Mary's death, Andrew left the family home and moved in with his grandparents, who apparently "adopted" him. Andrew drowned in the Monongahela River the day his son Clarence was 13 (August 12, 1905) according to my mother-in-law. My mother-in-law also believes that Andrew Piles was somehow "English", which would obviously mean he wasn't in this family line at all. I think that's kind of unlikely. Beth

    2. I am seeking information regarding the adoption of a male infant by Ben and Annie Piles, residents ofTyler, TX (1900), Palestine, TX (1910), and Wichita Falls, TX (1920). The adoptive parents had two grown children when they adopted the child 1900 and named him Jack. 1) Texas did not register births in 1900. 2) The birth parents were Irish immigrants (surname, believed to be Martin) who lived near Dallas/Ft.Worth, TX. 3) The adoption was possibly a compassionate act toward a relative with either the surname of Martin or Piles. 4) Ben and Annie Piles' daughter (Bertha?) married a Colwell and had a daughter named Jewel. If there are Pyle/Pile (Piles) researchers who have ties to the above surnames, I would appreciate hearing from them. So far, researching the mentioned surnames has not produced clues for me to follow up. Any information or advice on research sources will be gratefully recieved. Thank yhou, Donna Pyle

    1. My Line
    2. Hi everyone, My name is Jim Stanfield. I have been on the list for about a month, but havn't had time to post. Got time now, so here goes. I want to apolagize in advance for the long post, just couldn't find a short way to list my line. I have pretty much the sam PYLE ancestors as everyone else, beginning with John b. 1594 & Mary Marie WITHERS, to Nicholas b. 1624 & Edith MUSPRAT(T). From there I am decended from Nicholas' son Ralph b. 1-31-1670/71 Aug 1741 and Eleanor RAWLINGS b. 1663 , d. 1726. The research I have (which was done by a Claude W. Pyle in the 1930s) only lists on child of Ralph & Eleanor, that being William b. mar 9, 1699/00 in Chester Co. PA, d. June 1, 1746 , Chester C. PA. married Betty Chads, (daughter of Francis CHADS & Grace STANFIELD). Mr. Pyle lists 7 children of William & Betty: 1. Ralph b. abt 1727 2. Joseph b. mar 4, 1729/30 3. John b. abt 1732 4. William 5. Elinor 6. Mary 7. Sarah Mr. Pyle's research gets very short on details for the next few generations. According to his research, he (as well as I) is decended through Ralph. b. 1727. d. June 13, 1903 in Harford Co. Maryland, m. Sarah (unknown maiden). Only one child is listed, Isaac birth date unknown, d. jan 15, 1802. No information on Isaac's spouse. Mr. Pyle lists 3 children of Isaac, 1. Isaac, 2. Harmon, 3. Harland, with no birth years on either. His research shows my line to continue through the second Isaac. No spouse is listed for this Isaac either, but 10 children are listed, they are: 1. Jessie 2. Sarah 3. William 4. Mary 5. Isaac Lewis 6. Elizabeth 7. Amer 8. Hannah Jones 9. Lydia Susan 10. Harlan b. 1790 No birth years given for any, other than Harlan My decendency continues through Amer, b. unknown, d. 1834 Jackson Co. Ohio, m. Mary Shaver. Mr. pyle stated in his research that he had no proof that this Amer Pyle was the same Amer that was the son of Isaac, but that the coincidences were such that this line would be followed untill proven wrong. Mr. Pyle's research gets more detailed again beginning with Amer. Amer and Mary Shaver had 7 children: 1. Nicholas b. 1-3-1805 2. Phoebe b. 1806 3. Leah b. 1810 4. Maria b. 1813 5. John b. 1814 6. Levi b. 1818 7. Eli b. 1819 My line continues through Nicholas b. 1805, Virginia d. Oct. 29 1858 in White Co. IL, m. Margaret (Peggy) WISHON 1806-1890, to Amer (possibly America, there is an America Pyle buried in White Co. IL with the right death date) b. 1833 d. 1883, m. Deborah Ann ACORD 1856 in White Co. IL, to Kenchen Goshen Pyle (my g-grandfather) b. 1867 White C. IL d. 1949 MO, m. Ida Belle Baker in White Co. to their daughter Inez Zella, b. 1900 Stoddard Co. MO, died 1947 MO, who married my grandfather James Henry Stanfield. (No connection as of yet to the Grace Stanfield that married Francis CHADS) What I am searching for in some information to to fill in the blanks from Ralph Pyle b. 1727 d. 1803 to the first Amer Pyle that died in Jackson Co. OH in 1834. Any info that anyone has will help. Thanks and sorry for the long post. Jim Stanfield dgoat40@aol.com

    3. Roberta; I think that it may be possible that Martha was the grandaughter of Francis Malone, I just can't documennt it at the present time. I'm familar with the facts presented in the Pyle/Pile family book that reports that The property of William Malone in Eugene Twp. passed from William Malone to Robert and Martha Malone Pyle (my gg-grandparents), then to Samuel Pyle(g-grandfather of Ernie Pyle) and lastly Chester Arthur Pyle. I have information from my great Grandmother's sister (Margaret Hannaman) who wrote in a letter to California in the late 1850's, early sixtys that Billy Malone was a scalawag because of the things he was saying about the Mack family. Their were a number of Malones that were very successful businessmen in Vermillion county at the time. I have no doubt in my mind that Martha was related in some fashion to most of them, but would like to find some tie to her mother's side of the family. We are very close to putting this all together and I appreciate your response and will respond in kind if I get some new information. His Bible record is | thoroughly known and disseminated. But it seems possible that William could | be a son of Francis. Francis was born 17 jan 1760. I am researching my wife's side of the family and the PYLE name is first found with her paternal grandmother. Grace Alma Pyle, b.July 10, 1895 possibly in Indiana. Married Charles Rex Roache about 1911 possibly in Anderson City Indiana. She died in 1968 in LaGrange, Troup county, Georgia. At one time they lived in Bagdad, Santa Rosa county, Florida. Her father was Robert Marion Pyle who is thought to have died in or around Contonment, Florida. This is about all I have on this side of the family so you see why I need to find additional resources like your mailing list. I hope to be a contributing member and look forward to sharing my research with the other members. Thanks to Sara for getting me "signed" on.
